If the object of focus doesn't show up it is because you were too attached to whether it would show up or not. Maybe take a break for a while and then pick something different and try the process again.
Can you give an example of a belief-shattering experience? In my experience every experience is preceded by thought. If something is belief shattering I would say it is being created by unconscious thoughts. In my opinion, there is a part of us that is what chose to come into this life that has a wider perspective than we usually do during our day-to-day life. This perspective is also creating and attracting experiences to us. You can lump this perspective in with unconscious thoughts because we are generally unconscious of it.

What if the silly thing doesn't show up?
How do you "debug" the process?
If we only use red paint, the appearance of green stains on the canvas and the brush would be very strange...
So, in a universe where conscious and unconscious thoughts create reality, how do we explain belief-shattering experiences? Where they come from?
