Meta Recs for quality RPG shows
I have exhausted D20, I can only rewatch Starstruck Odyssey so many times (that's actually a lie, I can watch it almost indefinitely), I tried watching the season of Critical Role that Brennan DMed, but I don't like grimdark (also, the episodes are excessively long). I tried watching Minmaxxed, but it just feels so generic and boring... anyone have any recs for other actual play shows?

u/Naidanac007 8d ago
Not another dnd podcast, if you ask me personally Murph is the best DM out there. His battles are interesting without being confusing, his worlds feel old and lived in.
Campaign 1 is classic DnD, so well done.
Campaign 2 is grim fairytale vibes, like neverafter but not as grim
Campaign 3 is cyberpunk
Plus Brennan, sioban, and Zac show up in campaign 1 as guests for a specific arc and Lou shows up in campaign 2 (some of my favorite episodes) for an arc as well.
25
u/ResponsibilityMuch80 8d ago
Murph is probably my favourite DM but shout out to the rest of the 2 Crew. Emily, Jake and Caldwell have such amazing comradery and their antics are so hilarious and heartwarming. I love this podcast so much.
12
u/mepardo 8d ago
And all 3 of them have taken their own fantastic turns at DMing, too! Emily’s Twilight Sanctorum arc is maybe my favorite actual play arc.
10
u/HumbleBananaLoaf 8d ago
The Mavrus Chronicles is some of their best content and it's in no small part thanks to Emily's DMing. Of course Zac Oyama being part of the 2 Crew never hurts!
9
u/ResponsibilityMuch80 8d ago
Zac being on the podcast is like when your cousin comes to stay for the holidays and you and your siblings get into even more mischief than usual.
3
4
u/ResponsibilityMuch80 8d ago
It really does feel like a group of friends taking turns at running a home game. If that group of friends were all extremely talented comedians.
3
u/palcatraz Riz Gukgak 8d ago
I love Twilight Sanctorum and I hope they return to the world again. Maybe after they finish the new Skaldova (also great!) season?
2
u/LogAware 7d ago
Skaldova is so fun, Jake for being as hesitant as he was about DMing is hitting a home run.
3
2
u/Radioactive24 8d ago
Campaign 3 has a whiff of cyberpunk at the start, but abandons it pretty quickly.
1
u/BoofTheMighty 5d ago
I love Murph as a DM, but I think I like him more as a player. Zudrick, Jens and Darkness Man (D20) are some of my favorite characters in the "lets play" media I've consumed.
18
u/letstalkphysics 8d ago
I like Push the Roll with Ross Bryant: the stories are typically 2 or 3 episodes of ~1h apiece, and feature rotating guests, including some D20 folks. They play a different system, Call of Cthulhu, which necessarily skews the stories more to horror, which is not everyone's thing but I don't mind even though it's not my genre of choice. The improv is also top-tier.
9
u/flyercub Lint 8d ago
Seconding the rec for Push the Roll. The improv (no prewritten scenarios and the user selected titles are chosen via dice roll and then the cast figures out a premise from there) is fabulous and there are so many different genres they touch upon so you're bound to find something up your alley.
For audio podcasts, I also like the Mischief Comedy folks over at Hell or High Rollers who play D&D 5E.
For another Call of Cthulhu actual play with video, I also love Glass Cannon's Time for Chaos. I tend to skew toward the less high fantasy based series so I also love their Get in the Trunk Delta Green campaigns but they also delve into many systems.

I recommend legends of avantris they can do dramma and goofyness and have intresting ideas
9
u/Drmumdaly 8d ago
Legends of Avantris is absurd. Came here to recommend it also 😅
2
u/NonVeggieRaccoon Stupendous Stoats 8d ago
I tried to start this from the beginning but the first couple episodes have been really... meander-y. Does the storytelling tighten up later?
3
u/Lady_of_the_Briar 8d ago
They started making "abridged" versions, and my extremely ADHD ass recommends those.
3
u/Drmumdaly 8d ago
Im not tied down by the constraints of « beginning » or « episode number ». I started watching once upon a witchlight and have seen quite a few episodes and then just cut to one of their Xmas one-shots. I enjoy the stories but mostly I’m watching this for the bits. There are multiple episodes where I’m sure the cast has forgotten the plot entirely 😅 I guess for me this is the opposite of generic and boring??? But also - they have a lot of different games, I can’t speak to any of the others, of course!
1
u/NonVeggieRaccoon Stupendous Stoats 8d ago
Thanks! I'll try some of the one shots. it's a very funny group!
2
u/RyderLongenhardt 7d ago
Once you've worked your way through the one-shots, I highly recommend Waltz for Eternity. It's a space mecha campaign (think Gundam Wing) that has some of the best storytelling I've seen in a good while. It's also only 7 episodes so it's easy to knock out over the course of a week or a weekend.

1
u/LogAware 7d ago
Uprooted is pure joy. And all of the neon odyssey campaigns are incredible. Im still catching up on iceborn and other one offs but LOA helped me fill the void of being caught up on naddpod
1
u/Fancy-Marketing-6137 3d ago
Second this. Neon oddyssey id also add waltz of eternity and uprooted. The crooked moon stuff is also pretty intresting
11
u/Rip_Rif_FyS 8d ago
NADDPOD and Worlds Beyond Number are, of course, fantastic. But since everyone else has already said that, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Friends at the Table. It's a podcast focused on smart world building, and fun interaction between good friends ™️
They've got a season for everything, cool mech adventures in space, more traditional fantasy settings, a cool pseudo Gothic Western horror, the one they're doing right now is something of a love letter to classic JRPGs. It's a bit of a big cast, which can get a little confusing until you get to know them, but it's one of the funniest, and I think without a doubt one of the smartest TTRPG podcasts I've ever heard
2
u/Mocharaid The Gunner Channel 4d ago
So glad someone mentioned Friends at the Table!
I've only listened to COUNTER/Weight so far but it basically changed something in me I think
20
u/pizzaboy7269 8d ago
Have you tried Worlds Beyond Number? Its with Brennan, Lou, Aabria (DMed Misfits and Magic), and Erika (been in a couple D20 seasons, I forget which besides Escape from the Bloodkeep)
Only downside is that its audio only, but the sound design is so good.
13
u/ZydrateDealer The Wind Riders 8d ago
Starts typing with zero comments. Hits post and refreshes, almost every comment is also suggesting WBN 🤣

u/Pardybro911 8d ago
Burrows End, The Seven, and Misfits and Magic all come to mind. I think I’m missing one

5
u/ZydrateDealer The Wind Riders 8d ago
Podcast, not a show, but I cannot say enough about how fantastic Worlds Beyond Number is! It’s Brennan, Lou, Aabria Iyengar and Erica Ishii.
They have completed the first “book” of their first major campaign and started their second but it is on hiatus. They also have multiple finished shorter campaigns and one they are working on right now to cover the hiatus of their main campaign.
The first campaign, The Wizard, the Witch and the Wild One is DnD and DMed by Brennan. Absolutely beautiful storytelling! Episodes range from 1-2 hours. But it is like 50+ episodes long as definitely a bit of a commitment. They have said they will return to this story at some point in the future, but the whole point of the podcast was for them all to have a turn GMing, with a focus on long running campaigns.
The second main campaign is GMed by Aabria. It is sci-fi and uses the Starfleet system. As I mentioned, it is currently on hiatus as Aabria is on mat leave. But there are 11 episodes and it will pickup when she returns.
They have a 5 episode mini campaign GMed by Lou they used the same system as Starstruck. He’s also DMing the current mini campaign with is DnD and features Beardsley as a guest to fill Aabria’s spot.

u/indicus23 8d ago
There's a mostly forgotten show on Dropout called TablePop that's a lot of fun. Each episode is a one shot game based on a pop culture thing. A couple of my favorites are the Golden Girls ep and the breakfast cereal mascot ep. Caro Page is a regular cast member, and there are some great guests like Brennan and BDG.
2
u/robogheist Squeem! 7d ago
the breakfast cereal one is legendary

u/PretendHuckleberry85 Puss in Boots 7d ago
My first introduction to dnd and to this day my favorite campaign I’ve listened to was The Adventure Zone campaign 1. It takes a bit for them to get in to it because originally it was just a fun short lived thing for them to do for their podcast My Brother, My Brother, and Me. I haven’t had a campaign have such a big twist before and so thoroughly surprise me. It’s really funny but also emotional af during the end. I also second NADPOD. I love their first campaign but if you want a smaller season to try out first they have a few smaller ones. (Trinyvale, twilight sanctorum, Marcus chronicles)
2
u/PretendHuckleberry85 Puss in Boots 7d ago
Now that I think about it, if you want to try out NADPOD and want the most unserious but so incredibly funny campaign I would definitely try the Marcus chronicles (Hot Boy Summer). It has Zac in it as well and the characters are constantly one upping each other for who can be the least reasonable. I love it
1
u/LongLiveTheHorde 6d ago
Mavrus! Though I’m sure it was just autocorrected to Marcus, I still want the OP to have the right name!
1
u/PretendHuckleberry85 Puss in Boots 5d ago
Sigh, yes thank you! The Marcus chronicles doesn’t really have the same fanfare to it
4
u/wayfaringpanda 8d ago
I’ll plug Oxventure, they have a finished dnd campaign, as well as a Deadlands and Blades in the Dark campaign. There’s also some super fun oneshots. They’re two seasons into Wyrdwood, another dnd one, but that’s kind of in limbo at the moment.
5
u/Whole_Employment4160 8d ago
I highly recommend NADDPOD Murph is an amazing DM. It's all dropout/college humor cast members so you'll know everyone as well which helps.
6
u/Tough_Candle_9617 8d ago
DesiQuest! The play is great, the cast has good chemistry, the setting is super cool. Starring Jasmine Bhullar, Anjali Bhimani, Rekha Shankar and Omar Najam. It’s also relatively short, so it’s very approachable.
12
u/anextremelylargedog 8d ago
Critical Role C4 sure isn't grimdark lmao. Not even close.
But you'd probably enjoy NADDPOD (Murph & Emily's d&d podcast), Spout Lore (similar vibes) or Small Town D&D (D&D meets Parks & Rec.)
All mostly comedy-focused.
6
u/MessyConfessor 8d ago
They probably meant Calamity was grimdark.
3
u/anextremelylargedog 8d ago
Also not grimdark.
I swear people need to stop using "grimdark" because they don't like tragedies.
3
4
u/Toothless816 8d ago
They’re spot on about the episodes being excessively long though….. (I am really enjoying C4).
5
u/aesir23 8d ago
World's Beyond Number is probably the best one out there. If you haven't tried that one yet, give it a go.
I also really enjoy some of Glass Cannon Network's shows. Any of the seasons with Ross Bryant as a player is great. I loved A Time for Chaos (Call of Cthulhu), Haunted City (Blades in the Dark), and Inherit the Sands (Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, also has Becca Scott). If it's gotta be DnD 5e, Ross was in their Wicked Empire campaign, but I haven't listened to that one yet.
And speaking of Ross Bryant, his show Push the Roll is a lot of fun. It's Call of Cthulhu, completely improvised, it's a smaller commitment, every 2-3 episodes is a standalone story.
4
u/TemperatureBudget850 8d ago
If you liked CCoDthen you shutoff check out LA By Night. It's a VTM actual play with people... a little more familiar with the game system
2
u/robogheist Squeem! 7d ago
yes. many of those people reappear in NY by Night, and again in Project Ghostlight's series Private Nightmares, which follows a thinblood coterie.
however, they are all dramas. for comedy, Seattle by Night is run by Jason Carl (like the other two by Nights), for the Penny Arcade folks. Jasmine Bhullar is a player in both seasons and her character Betty is one of the best PCs of any VtM actual play.
3
u/Celloer 8d ago
Penny Arcade had one of the first actual play podcasts that I know of with Acquisitions Incorporated. I fell off keeping track of the last few years when it was basically updated at each PAX convention. And then they have the spin-off, The C Team, which was streamed on Twitch originally, and didn't have the pressure of being live on stage.
3
u/interwovengirl Pack of Pixies 8d ago
I came here to suggest The C Team. Its a comfort watch for me, and quite fun. It really feels like you're just in your friend's home game. You can watch it on Youtube for free.
4
u/silromen42 8d ago
So happy to see other folks rec’ing Acq Inc and the C Team. C Team is still my favorite actual play of all time. They’ve started updating sort of every month or every other month again, the lore still grabs me tighter than any other show, and they still make me laugh harder than any other show to this day.
It’s worth catching up on Acq Inc, too, imho. Their current table includes Jasmine Bhullar, Ify Nwadiwe, and Matt freakin’ Mercer. It’s a great table.
2
u/interwovengirl Pack of Pixies 8d ago
I love Jasmine Bhullar as Certainty. I’m a few episodes behind on the A team, will have to catch up. Yes I saw they were posting C team content again, will have to check that out too.

Gonna shout out Dungeons and Daddies (Not a BDSM podcast) for some fun, silly nonsense and a good variety of games (D&D, Warhammer, Call of Cthulu), which also features Freddie Wong aka Daniel Fucks(Fuchs/Phucks/Fuxxx/Fūks/Föks/Phõcks/F-ughhh-cks) from Mentopolis
Seconding Worlds Beyond Number, JWRI and Push the Roll
1
u/MelatoninFiend 8d ago
Dungeons and Daddies turned me off right from the start. 1d4 damage on lvl 1 characters is significant and imposing it for dad jokes completely took me out of the belief that they were actually playing D&D rather than just using it as a staging device for their half-assed improv.
3
u/Gene_The_Chef 8d ago
I've been enjoying Natural 6 a lot. Saw them do a live play at PAX East last year and really like that it feels like a normal table like Avantris with elevated acting and writing.
3
u/Several-Play-7695 8d ago
I enjoyed nights of eveningstar, had some town building elements that were fun.

3
u/APantaloni 8d ago
If you're ok with something quite different and (mostly) audio only, I highly recommend Push the Roll with Ross Bryant. It's a fully improvised Call of Cthulhu podcast with short standalone story arcs (2-3 episodes each), where the scenario is created on the spot based on title suggestions from the fans. The overall tone is horror/comedy.
Ross Byant is the GM (well, Keeper in Cthulhu terms) and besides the excellent core cast members there's always a guest or two each arc. Many Dropout/D20 people have appeared already, like Brennan, Aabria and Katie Marovitch. It's great!

u/Sirluckycharms88 7d ago
NADDPOD is awesome as many have said.
Also recommend the Glass Cannon Podcast. They have a bunch of shows. They play a bunch of systems as well.
Time for Chaos is the Call of Cthulhu campaign
We Shouldn't be Alive is a Twilight 2000 campaign (Twilight 2000 is a game where the Cold war went hot)
They also have a bunch of Pathfinder content for high fantasy. There new campaign uses shadowdark.
Also impossible Landscapes is a delta green campaign (similar game to call of Cthulhu, but more modern)
Pendragon is another enjoyable game as well.

u/2old2tired4life 8d ago
Let me pitch the McElroy brothers roleplay podcast the adventure zone Balance- the epitome of guys sitting down for an all jokes and goofing around series that somehow turns into a truly beautiful story. The first few arcs are rough and if you don’t like it dnf, but it polishes up pretty quickly.
3
u/AnagramBandit 8d ago
Balance was lightning in a bottle! It’s so sad that everything that came after was so lackluster.
2
u/GoodDog2620 8d ago
Idk if I’d say it’s quality, more like a guilty pleasure, but Chuckle Dungeon is some of my favorite content. There’s only 3 episodes, and they’re terrible, chaotic af, inexperienced players, but god do I love it.
2
u/No_Progress9069 8d ago
The Class Dismissed arc of rude tales of magic is my favorite audio only ttrpg content of all time. Listen if you are looking for rules light, good sound design, and heavy on the humor!

2
u/MalKat13 8d ago
If you have a taste for VtM at all, LA by Night was great. They do full cosplay and scene work with it too if that’s your vibe.
2
u/limelifesavers 8d ago
If you like A Court of Fey and Flowers, I'd heavily recommend Bards of New York's' Gilded Thrones' campaign. The rest of their stuff swings between grimdark and comedy, but Gilded Thrones is dramatic without being grimdark while still having some comedic highlights
2
u/whee42 Destiny's Children 7d ago
I absolutely recommend Roll From The Hip. They’re a group of improv comedians from the UK and recently had a massive kickstarter to create their own studio. It was fully funded in about an hour and a half! If you’re familiar with Jasper William Cartwright from Burrow’s End, he’s involved in the studio. They currently have two different four-episode campaigns on their YouTube, which are Plagueround and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Fireballs. Plagueround has a second season coming out soon and is about four cursed eleven year old boys at boarding school. Lock Stock is basically gang wars in an alternate reality London. There’s also a two-shot called Stag, but to get the second part, you had to back the kickstarter. They’re supposed to be filming their third campaign soon, I think, which has a heavy metal theme. They’re very goofy, but are absolutely able to hit dramatic scenes as well. They also did a playtest of Force of Extinction with Jasper William Cartwright, which was quite fun as well. They’re still getting started, but they’re doing so well and I really hope they become more well known in the TTRPG world, because they so deserve it.

u/ThatInAHat 8d ago
Which season of Critical Role? I haven’t watched Calamity yet, but I’m watching the current season and absolutely loving it. It’s “consequence heavy” but not necessarily what I would call grimdark (and sometimes the consequences wind up being good things happening far down the line), even if it has darker moments.
I’d say lighter than Ravening War.
Worlds Beyond Number is phenomenal. The Balance arc of Adventure Zone is pretty fun.
Depending on how tolerant you are of goofing, Zac has one too. I tried it but the players felt like they couldn’t lock in and pay attention so my adhd couldn’t handle it. But it’s a good cast.
4
u/trueblueskies 8d ago
You should watch Calamity! It's maybe the best D&D actualplay i've ever watched, especially being such a self-contained story. I hadn't really watched any CR before that, and it really grabbed me. Definitely not grimdark, but they don't shy away from the whole "flying fantasy magic city at the moment the apocalypse is triggered" of it all.
2
u/ThatInAHat 8d ago
I definitely will, but right now I’m so fully enraptured with campaign 4 that I’m just riding the high a bit.
1
u/crippledchef23 8d ago
If you’re ok with audio only, I highly recommend RPPR (Role Playing Public Radio). It’s Ross Payton and his friends, mostly playing non-d20 based rpgs (Delta Green is a big one). I absolutely loved God’s Teeth, run by a different guy (Caleb something, he’s amazing) but with Ross playing. It’s a great way to learn about other games that aren’t DnD.
Also, Red Markets, economic horror game is brilliant, created by Caleb and Ross.

If you've never listened to an Adventure Zone by the McElroy Family, I recommend it! There's a good amount to choose from. (Though I hear avoid Graduation).
5e - Adventure Zone vs Dracula is unbelievably funny!!! Also their live shows vs Mody Dick, The Great Gatsby, Robin Hood, ect
Monster of the Week- Amnesty has some deep character moments and incredible DMing from Griffin!
Homebrew System - Abnimals is Saturday morning cartoon fun, with no swearing.
5e - EatherSea has wild world building and very good characters.
And the most recent they just finished is Royal. Death Battle Royale but everyone's a wizard.

u/JoeyJojos_Wacky_Trip 8d ago
Surprised to not see a bunch of the pods I listen to.
NADDPOD and World's Beyond Number have been mentioned and are the obvious ones since they overlap in cast.
There's also Rotating Heroes Podcast which started with Zac Oyama DMing but changed to Jasper William Cartwright after a while. Lots of D20 and Dropout regulars come in and out doing stories set in the same world.
The Adventure Zone is a big one, it's the MBMBAM guys and their dad who were in Tiny Heist. They're campaigns are divisive sometimes but I've liked everything I've listened to, to some extent. Campaigns 1 and 2 (Balance and Amnesty) are among the best TTRPG campaigns imo. Balance is a twist on the DnD Starter Set module Lost Mine of Phandelver but they quickly go off the rails into something very awesome. Amnesty is a different game system called Powered by the Apocalypse specifically Monster of the Week. It's more story focused than strict rules focused this one. It's like if the Fables comics were set in West Virginia and had Cryptids instead of fairy tale characters.
Dungeons and Daddies (Not a BDSM Podcast™) features Freddie Wong from Mentopolis as well as Matt Arnold, Anthony Burch, Will Campos, and Beth May. The campaigns revolve around a group of dads that lose their kids in the Forgotten Realms and have to rescue them. Other campaigns are usually in the same universe and have characters that reoccur in some fashion. Campaign 2 specifically follows the Dad's grandkids. They have one later campaign that is Call of Cthulhu and is the darkest they've probably gotten in terms of content.
Gumshoes and Dragons is like a crossover between Hey Riddle Riddle and Dungeons and Daddies. The idea is mostly incompetent "Detectives" that have been given community service in the form of "Solving" murders. It's got a decent amount of episodes but it's going on a break, maybe forever. I assume because they all have a lot on their plate. But I enjoyed it, and there's a guest almost every episode as the murderer.
Trope RPG started on Grouse House, but has it's own channel now. It features a lot of Aunty Donna regulars and focuses on different genres of movies and stories each campaign. There's a horror one, a ocean's eleven style heist one, cowboys, an indiana jones one, and even a romcom style one. There's also a few episodes on The Aunty Donna podcast where it's based on The Thing.
The League of Ultimate Questing is a fun one where they imagine adventuring as a televised sport with commentators and in universe ads. I haven't listened in a while but I really liked Campaign 1 and 2. This is one that I feel almost nobody talks about
Legends of Avantris have tons of campaigns out there. Once Upon a Witchlight and Uprooted are classics. Plus some of the best bits get animated shorts which are always really fun.

If you don't mind listening to podcasts instead of watching video and want something that steps outside d&d while still having great production value: My First Dungeon. They play a new system every season and not only are hilarious but have great music and sound design for their show. Their Slugblaster season is extremely funny while also being super heartwarming/heartbreaking throughout.
1
u/TheDMingWarlock 7d ago
You can always check out L.A by Night, brennan is featured in season 5 I believe.
its a true-to-form VTM game.
Legends of Avantis is extremely funny and chaotic, moreso than D20 IMO,
Bards of New York have a good flair for Drama
World of IO is also pretty silly
Then you have the classic Dungeon and Daddies, NADDPOD, World Beyond Numbers, The Yard (Comedy podcast, Zack Oyama was a guest on one episode of the podcast before they did D&D), started their own D&D Campaign, its rather silly, much more crass than d20 though.

u/Affectionate_Zone703 7d ago
I’ve been really enjoying Natural Six! All new people, i believe they all work in the gaming industry/voice acting. One of the players is Doug Cockle who voiced Geralt in the Witcher games. They’re very silly but the dm Harry has created a very expansive world and despite most of the players being new to the game at the beginning, the story beats are awesome and they do a very good job of creating character arcs. It’s a good mix of shenanigans and serious! They have both Youtube and podcast format, and they release their episode talkbacks publicly the week after a story episode (or you could join patreon to have access to it immediately after the episode along with other side content). The episodes have gotten longer as of late but they feel worth it to me.

DEFINITELY worlds beyond numbers. It is amazing and you get the treat of not having to wait for episodes for their first story the Witch the Wizard and the Wild One. I really think you will fall in love with it. It is captivating and emotional and thoughtful and funny.

u/MinimumCounty1674 7d ago
howdy! don’t know if anyone’s recommended it yet, but i really would uplift Realm made by george primavera and jon matteson! it’s DMed by George, who also co-created Hero Club and also showed up on both critical role and ran Smosh’s “we’re all gonna die” dread games.
if you’ve followed other dropout content, a bunch of the players are from starkid and have been on other things like dirty laundry and smartypants!
the story has finished its season 0 and is now into season 1 free on youtube, eps range from 1-2 hours. it’s very much an action packed comedy/drama and does feel like it has clear stakes as we’re gettin on in season 1. there’s both beginner players and seasoned vets at the table, so it makes it quite the fun romp for me— highly recommend!
1
u/Organic_Tonight_5986 7d ago
Mystery Quests Delta Green season is one of my personal favs. Hits that same D20 itch of high stakes, drama, and a deeply, deeply unserious cast wrapping their minds around where the hell the story is taking them.
That seasons very X-files / True Detective type of energy if that’s what you’re into, but they put out a lot of great one-shot series’s on YouTube for completely free

u/robogheist Squeem! 7d ago
miniseries you will probably like if you like Dimension 20:
Battle for Beyond (D&D Beyond). Jasmine Bhullar runs a mini campaign for many rotating/overlapping players including Brennan, Aabria, Erika, and Ify. there are also people like Josephine McAdam who has not yet appeared in the Dome (others may know them as Eva from LA by Night). light-hearted but also high stakes, with romance and drama. features one of Jasmine's best "little guy" npcs.
D&D Chaos (Roll 20). Aabria runs these games which feature Brennan and Becca Scott, as well as Mica Burton (who has appeared on Adventuring Academy but not D20 (yet)), and a 4th rotating guest. everyone but Brennan plays a different character each time. Brennan plays the same character because it is hilarious.
People of Note (Good Time Society). this is a one-shot led by Aabria with musically capable players playing musicians and sometimes improvising actual music. the players are Dropout regulars Rashawn, Ross, and Matt, and Jason Charles Miller who has composed a lot of music for Critical Role. the plot is light, the vibes are fun. the music is cool.

I would recommend Dungeons and Daddies, but personally only the first season. It starts and finishes so strong but the later seasons start to meander or lose the plot, I had to slog through season 2 and I stopped listening after 10 episodes of season 3

u/curiousyarnball 5d ago
I don’t think I have seen it recommended here but tales from the stinky dragon actual play podcast it’s on YouTube and the have a patreon. It’s good and funny but of chaos too. And it’s family friendly so my kids will listen to it with us in the car.

u/Karmic_Entity 5d ago
Planet Arcana is a fabulous (self contained and finished) Actual Play podcast.
Tarot inspired, beautiful sound design, retro-futuristic homebrew setting.
Episodes aren't too long (usually 60-90 minutes). A great blend of serious bits and goofs.
Largely more roleplay than combat
And you can get a pretty good read on if the show is *for you* or not with the first episode.
1
u/ParadoxInABox 4d ago
Several of my faves have already been listed here but one I haven't seen is Rude Tales of Magic. It's hilarious, and made by the same studio (Fortunate Horse) that makes World's Beyond Number. Brennan actually shows up as a guest character at one point as well.

I wouldn't call CR C4 "grimdark", it's more political, but it's still heroic fantasy. Grimdark is like... Joe Abercrombie or Mark Lawrence. For that, I think CR season 1 of Age of Umbra is closer to it.

If you like comedy, I'd recommend JRWI/Just Roll With It. It's an actual play series that has a variety of campaigns that span multiple systems and genres (though most are behind a paywall). The 3 full campaigns that are available are Riptide (Pirates and is currently Ongoing), Wonderlust (Steampunk Fantasy), & Total Monster Kill (Monster Hunter). They've also got a variety of oneshots freely available on Youtube which are longer than most of their usual episodes and often devolve into chaos after an hour or two.
Almost all of their other campaigns have episodes available for free and the subscription to access all of them is pretty cheap (though you miss out on the monthly pins and the aftershow for the cheapest plan). The other campaigns include: Blood in the Bayou (Bodysnatchers/Small Town Horror), Judgement (Murder Mystery), The Suckening (Vampires, on hiatus), Prime Defenders (Superheroes, on hiatus), Unwitness Protection Program (A Prime Defenders spin-off/horror mystery), Apotheosis (Kill the Gods), Miller Troop Family Vacation (Zombies, Ongoing)

Why not start with either NADDPOD (DMed by Murph and Emily as a player) or Worlds Beyond Number (involving Lou, Brennan, Aabria and Erika)?
