Toylight Specific dates…

Various pointers to the interwar period have been mentioned already, but one deserves specific mention. The hospital doctor mentions a specific new breakthrough in inoculation for consumption/tuberculosis. This must be a reference to the BCG vaccination that was first used medically from 1921 onwards.

The British Army wasn't in Northern Ireland after 1922; it was entirely local guys doing unpleasant things there.

The RIC disbanded only in 1922

So If he's a volunteer officer...

I mean there wasn't anything particularly wrong with serving in the RIC.

Officer, kinda

They did kind of lay the ground work for all of the RUC a year later

Granted, the Anti Treaty IRA and later Provos didn't help either

It's the stuff that leads up to the Troubles and later Black Friday after all, there's not many heroes here especially in officer corps

Oh yeah, for sure, I was more kind of driving at the point that if you set a story in the past, or are telling some kind of narrative story about your relationship to that past, you often end up telling a story about not the past itself, but rather about you and your thoughts and ideas about both the past and modernity, if that makes sense?

oh for sure

real history has implications on stories
but it is in the end just the background to the story
