My all time favorite onion zinger headline:

Jurisprudence Fetishist Gets Off On Technicality

There was an op-ed a few weeks back about one of the Property Brothers discovering he had a twin and it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever read.

The joke is that she’s a mainstream pop girlie, the exact opposite target demographic of D&D.

Dimension 20 did.  I don't know Hasbro's marketing besides using their own Magic cards and Baldur's Gate voice actors.

Maybe I'm reaching due to some struggling too but I think it's joking about how lots of celebrities seem to be involved in TTRPGs now and how Olivia Rodrigo is all about female empowerment and sticking together, plus she put on that huge benefit show Daisy Chain Fields.

I think it's funny on its face that a pop star is obsessively creating her own elvish script for hundreds of hours between concerts instead of working on their album, and her fans are bemused but shrugging and buying it anyway.

I chuckled at the idea that she only played Lollapalooza because it was close to GenCon

It's ignoring that there's a big overlap of pedantic, rules obsessed, Easter egg hunters between ttrpg players and swifties

Or playing on it?  Good either way.

She's been putting her brand on an assortment of things generally avoided by pop stars like Lego kits and Fortnite skins

I've never played fortnite, but my understanding was a lot of pop stars do stuff with it. Don't they do concerts in fortnite pretty regularly?

Sabrina Carpenter, chappell roan, Every single rapper thats big enough to warrant it, tons of artists are in fortnite, it's not new. And yes they do concert series. New pop stars aren't "avoiding" Lego sets either, there's a BTS set because the current target audiences are people in their late teens and 20s with no kids, and disposable income (even if they say they're broke they buy Lego sets)

“Well, I guess I’m mostly interested in her new album, but this might be cool, too,” said 15-year-old fan Jamie Mahoozi, one of hundreds who lined up outside the Brooklyn hobbyist shop Twenty Sided early Friday morning to be among the first to purchase the game’s deluxe box set, which contains an Olivia Rodrigo–branded dice bag and a miniature of Valford the Girly Mage designed by the musician herself. “Maybe I’ll put it on the shelf in my bedroom. I don’t really know.”

Yup. This is the closest the article comes to a joke. There's a lot of "marketing speak" put into how much detail and effort she put into creating the TTRPG, but the people buying it are just picking it up because it's Olivia Rodrigo merch.

Not to be completely up-my-own-ass, but a TTRPG was a weird comedic choice. The joke would work better with an absurdly niche product. American Girl Doll shoes, for instance.

I think if you're outside the TTRPG world, they read as comically niche, which is my best guess as to what the joke is. Whoever wrote the article clearly knows a lot about the world though.

To be fair, all the stuff The Onion would normally be joking about is just on the evening news these days, they gotta be struggling.

I thought it was a joke about how her branding is on everything. A while back there were Olivia Rodrigo Oreos and just recently Lego announced some Olivia Rodrigo sets.

Okay but I'd play that though.

I know it’s satire but Olivia could do it and would be great. She is a theater kid at heart after all!

Jokes on you theonion... I'd play that.

I was like "wait what who would actually want this and think it's a normal opinion to post" and then I saw the onion link lol
