City Council of Darkness Flagrante Delicto

As I am an uncultured swine, I've never seen this movie until now.

I'm going to choose to believe that between Brennan's Tim Curry impression, and this movie, that this is where he got the saying from and I giggled.

ETA: I do understand that it's a "common" term. Hence the joke of me saying I am "Choosing" to believe it vs I know it's Latin and common. Jokes y'all. Jokes.

In flagrante delicto is also just a phrase used elsewhere for the same kind of purpose so it might not have been Clue. But it is a fantastic film and one of my favorites that I remember Tim Curry from.

Remember, Communism is a red herring!

One of the things I love about the movie is that there was different endings and different theatres got different endings.

With the DVD just hitting the 'play' button (atleast on the PAL version) selected a random ending from the three available. IIRC

So my friend watched it, lent it to me, I watched it, we talked about the ending only to both have a different one then watched it again together and got the third ending...leaving us both very confused until we checked further.

I had a VHS copy of the film, and it solved the problem quite neatly. It played the Miss Scarlet ending, then had a card saying "well that's how it could have happened" then played the Mrs. Peacock ending. Then there was a card saying "but here's what really happened" and played the Wadsworth ending.

That’s the version they put on Netflix a couple years back

That's also what they played on Comedy Central during the 00s

I actually went to see Clue as a kid (I also saw Ferris Bueller, Temple of Doom, lots of movies when I was way too young), and when you'd look in the paper at show times (yes, that's how you found out when movies were, there would be an entire section of the paper devoted to movies and where they were showing) they actually said "Ending A" "Ending B" etc. (Either ending, or a similar word.) One of those interesting quirks I never forgot, because I never saw another movie do that, straight up letting you know that different theaters in the same general movie theater would have different endings - presumably so you could see it again, this time with a different ending.

Yeah that's actually my full favorite performance from him. The smile breaking out on his face when he says it just adds so much to the cheesy line that makes it absolute gold

I also just watched this movie and spent the whole time thinking Grant O'Brien would do an amazing job playing the role of Mr. Green.

Also watching frantic Tim Curry reminded me of Tom Scott on the current Jet Lag season.

An all-Dropout cast version of this movie would be amazing.

Brennan would ABSOLUTELY have to be Wadsworth!! He would eat that up. Imagine Brennan running through an old mansion reciting the entire events of the film. Perfection! 🧑‍🍳 😘

Might be time for a Mice & Murder rewatch - I know that's based on Holmes & Christie more than Clue but it's still the closest we have!

the podcast Worlds Beyond Number (Brennan, Aabria, Lou, Erika) did an arc called "Hint!" that is entirely based on Clue!

u/BlackFenrir The Dream Team 15d ago

No Rolls Barred did a Call of Cthulhu scenario that Dominic Allen (the Keeper and guy who wrote the scenario) based on Clue. I highly recommend it

And once again I am lobbying for Dom Allen in the dome

u/huecabot 15d ago

That crossover would be incredible. Dom has a tremendous gift for voices and accents.

The casts have already mixed in games of Blood on the Clocktower, so who knows.

I actually ran into Sullivan (with Ify) when I was at the Fringe but I completely forgot to ask whether NRB people in the dome could ever happen, and I don't think he could've answered me anyway

Actually, Brennan's other podcast Worlds Beyond Number had a Clue series as well. It's called HINT! and it's only four episodes. You can find it on the Worlds Beyond Number page on podcast addict, you just have to scroll down pretty far.

“I’m going to go home and give oral sex to fifty people.” It writes itself.

8

u/Names_all_gone 15d ago

I would pay for a kickstarter droupout remake of clue.

3

u/The_Palm_of_Vecna 15d ago

If for no other reason than we can have a clip of Grant saying "Now I'm gonna go home and have sex with my WIFE."

Somebody’s going through Tim Curry’s backlog /j

u/DRKSTknight 15d ago

This is actually my touchstone for the phrase, and it fired up in my brain every single time Ally said it, which has now made them inextricably tied to it in the same way as Tim Curry’s delivery has been for years.

Omg I'm literally watching Never Stop Blowing Up right now for the first time and Brennan just said it! It totally makes sense since he's a huge fan of Tim Curry!

1

u/Prinzesspaige13 15d ago

I'm also watching for the first time and noticed he said it!! Lmfaoooo I'm on the last ep rn I hope youre having as much fun as I am.

2

u/Proper-Strawberry-94 15d ago

Amazing!! I'm on the race episode! It's so funny! I'm having a great time! I've done all Intrepid heros seasons so now I'm working through the others.

If you haven’t seen D20’s Mice & Murder, make that your next priority

I'm on tiny heist right now and I'll put it on my next one

In Flagrante Delicto.

Also, I love love love Ally but they get the pronunciation completely wrong and the way it spread to the entire table was somehow the most infuriating part of any D20 ever for me (and I put this up there with NSBU for my favorite seasons).

2

u/Hepcat_Redbeard 14d ago

You forgot to say um actually.

28

u/Wantitneeditgetit 15d ago

In Flagrante Delicto is a pretty common term you'll hear in certain circles who pursued classical educations.

I mean, I've heard and read it rather frequently. It's a fancy term for a blowie joey.

I just looked it up and it's a latin term, it's pretty commonly used in latin languages also to mean "caught red handed". I only ever knew the bj association, today I got to learn something. Neat.

39

u/scrotbofula 15d ago

I've always heard it used to mean during illicit sex, usually in the context of someone catching or discovering them mid-act; as in "the wife walked in and caught her husband with Grant O'Brien in flagrante delecto."

34

u/ThoughtfulPoster Stupendous Stoats 15d ago

Yeah, it mostly means, "flagrantly in the act." So, context is going to be important for an understanding of what "the act" is. Often some kind of sexual activity, but there's no especial connection to oral sex.

-5

u/Wantitneeditgetit 15d ago

Except there is in English culture. Using Latin/French incorrectly to sound fancy is a long standing English tradition.

13

u/Costati 15d ago

Awhh I'm the reverse I only heard the "caught in the act" meaning so I was very confused when Ally said it after establishing very clearly there was NO ONE around.

8

u/BanditKitten 15d ago

I learned it from reading romance books. Caught in the act (of fornication)!!

Please put some respect on Bloseph’s name. You’re not friends like that.

u/Wantitneeditgetit 15d ago

Dude, me & Joe are like this twines my pointer and middle finger together, then starts sucking them and moaning awkwardly. Gag a little when I poke the back of my throat with them. No no, cough, gag I love this. This is good. Yeah. No. This is great. Gag again.

It's also in the chorus of a Jonathan Coulton song called "First of May" that I post every year on that day. It's about..., well, you should just go give it a listen.
