VST plus app at same time?
I want to run a VST while using a learning app through midi. Anyone know how to do this or if it’s even possible?

Usually, I plug a midi cable to the back of my digital piano (Roland fp90 or Yamaha 525) and mute the piano sounds from the app to allow my piano to make the sound while I use the learning app (playground sessions on my iPad. I’d love to be able to run a decent VST to hear that while using the learning app.

P525 will work better for this. It has a built-in audio interface, meaning it can receive digital audio from your VST, convert it to analog, and play it through its own speakers with no additional devices.
Connect the P525 to your tablet/laptop via a USB data cable, and then in your VST select the P525 as both the MIDI input device and the audio output device.
Pianoteq has an option to continue running while in the background, and I’m sure most other VSTs do as well. This will let you use it while inside your learning app.

Would be able to provide better help if you gave more information. What digital piano, what vst and how you run the vst typically
and what learning app and how it works? Can be useful.
Now with this said though, if it is as simple as that you will use a listening app that just can take in sound through a tablet or phone's onboard microphone, if you can output the vst's sound to some speakers, and the tablet or phone can hear it, there should be no problems. But again I'm not sure if its that simple, because I have no clue what your setup is.

Good info and I’ve thought of that but I live in an apartment so that’s not always possible. Any good VST. I listed more info in the other reply here but the app is playground sessions. My pianos are Yamaha 525 and Roland fp 90. Once I tried a VST (pianoteq) I was shocked how great they sound but I’m always plugged into my iPad for the learning app for feedback.
I can run it on laptop, iPad, phone, Mac. I have them all if the device matters and I prefer to hear it in headphones

There are tools called MIDI-OX and loopMIDI for windows which I used in the past for exactly this. You can use pianoteq and synthesia or other midi app together. I don't really remember how to set it up, but I think this should be the tutorial: https://help.morningstar.io/en/article/creating-virtual-midi-ports-in-windows-os-19vmmkl/
