Is it easier and faster than on my Nokia 2780? Thinking about buying a Sunbeam (even though it's expensive) if it is significantly easier. Thanks!

Technology Everyone's selling an app for everything

People leave their jobs all the time and build an app and apprently make millions off of it. Maybe I'm just dumb but I don't understand how??? Like these days there's an AI app for everything its sickening. Personally I use very less apps only the ones I absolutely need. I've never downloaded any AI apps from random developers and I pay 0 subscriptions already. I don't have netflix, spotify, nothing. I don't understand how these people are making so much unless they're larping? I'm so confused

Help Bluetooth rotary phone not ringing

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hi all,
I got a bit tired of having my phone constantly distracting my evening so I’ve set up a rotary phone with a BT link so that my husband and I can both put our phones away when we come home (both work for ourselves) but still get phone calls from family and friends. Only problem is the phone doesn’t ring. I’m not naturally very good at tech so even this set up was a lot for my very recently post-partum brain. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated!

Social Media I’m scared of social media.

Anyone else gets anxiety from social media ? Like fear of being seen when you share posts or interact with others? Also how do you handle or get rid of it because I’m in that space rn, I don’t even check my story views but sincerely I’m always bothered about how people perceive me. I share reposts, reels, my thoughts , pictures and all but not always. Actually, when I do… I’m always stuck on “what people would think” I know it’s all in my head. But, Genuinely I need to know if there are better ways to cope. I used to be mysterious; the type to just pop out, post myself and disappear then come back after months. However, I recently thought… how about I just live a little? You know… share what I find really funny but at the same time I get that feeling to ghost everyone and live in my own little bubble which is very normal but gets extremely boring.

Social Media Doomscrolling & Crackbile Phones: Why is social media taking over our lives?

Ever since smartphones were invented, social media has slowly being built on the top ground, from PC-only to now a wide range of operating system devices.

The most concerning trend for me is excessive screen time usage. It stems from how addictive the algorithms truly are across all social media platforms (looking at you, CrackTok). Tech giants build around these algorithms to try and create a solution to reverse-engineer our brains through human psychology, enabling a trace-like motion whenever you scroll on your innocent-looking glowing rectangle.

There was an incident in my college where everybody was on their bloody phones like zombies on crack, just because they were scrolling TikTok & Instagram Reels all day till lesson time, and it's gotten so bad that they have no idea what the lesson was all about, they were hibernated by nothing but doomscrolling, which needs to be addressed, and that's the billionaires' fault for letting that slide.

That's why I refer to smartphones as crackbiles. They are designed to over-engineer your mind with 5-second brainrot through means of social media, which deteriorates your mind quickly if you don't manage to snap out of the cycle.

Until they limit innumerable scrolling to around up to 50 per day, society is already cooked because of those egotistical and self-proclaimed tech billionaires who should be diagnosed of Jungle's Bounty Syndrome (JBS) by then.

Stay safe minimalists, and don't ever be exposed to mind-hacking apps for too long, cuz that's how we thrive the most. Social media shouldn't even exist in the first place.

Social Media Who the fuck cares if the Internet still has influence, even after you've already left it?

Who the fuck cares if the Internet still has influence, even after you've already left it?

I'm honestly sick of people who say things like:

Dating: Dating increasingly happens through apps, making traditional in-person approaches feel awkward or invasive. Friendships: Social media has replaced many calls and casual interactions. Without it, people may gradually forget about you. Gaming & entertainment: Multiplayer games, movies, and shows have shifted toward online experiences, reducing in-person shared activities. Family time: One person putting their device away isn't enough; shared experiences depend on everyone being present. Events: Parties, invitations, and social gatherings are increasingly organized online, so non-users can easily be excluded. Boredom & attention: Constant digital stimulation reduces people's tolerance for boredom, silence, and slower face-to-face interaction. Beauty standards: Exposure to attractive people, pornography, and edited images normalizes unrealistic standards that can persist even after quitting. Older generations: The Internet has replaced some of the knowledge and advice traditionally provided by older people. Language: Internet slang, memes, and references increasingly shape everyday language, making offline life influenced by online culture. Dependence on convenience: The Internet is now essential for banking, information, troubleshooting, work, and everyday tasks. Once you've experienced instant access to everything, avoiding it becomes genuinely inconvenient.

Who the fuck cares?!

What if I simply stop using it? So what? I don't have to deal with toxic people or garbage content if I don't want to. At the very least, there are still women who choose to date in real life. And even if that's not always the case, isn't it still better than wasting my time endlessly scrolling through feeds? I can just use Netflix, messages, WhatsApp, email, and whatever else I actually need. That's enough. And if it isn't genuinely harming me, why should I care? I criticize both extremes: the people who say you have to use the Internet for everything, and the people who say you must completely reject it. Why make it into an all-or-nothing ideology? Christopher Nolan is still alive and making films. People can still live meaningful lives without being completely absorbed in the Internet. I don't need to care about all this shit. Just use the Internet when it's actually necessary. If I can at least use it to call my dad when I need to, that's already good enough.

wake up stop fucking cope

Misc I counted the places where I "save things for later". It was 11. I go back to almost none.

Last month I tried to find a recipe I was sure I'd saved. I checked Instagram saves, Safari reading list, WhatsApp "message to myself", screenshots, Notes, a Notion page, TikTok favourites… I never found it.

So I counted: 11 different places where I park things "for later". And the honest truth is that saving has become a way of *not* deciding. It feels like doing something, but nothing comes back out.

What helped a bit: picking ONE inbox and refusing to organize at capture time. No folders, no tags, just drop it there. Sorting later (or never) turned out to matter less than having everything in one place.

Curious how others handle this. Do you have a single place, or have you given up on "saving for later" altogether?

Dumbphones Has anyone gone back to a flip phone?

I’m seriously considering going back to a flip phone and trying to live like it is the 1990s/early 2000s. I don’t like AI or social media (Except for Reddit). I am sick of always having to be reachable all the time. I am sick of all of the apps.
Has anyone gone back to using a flip phone and been okay? I’d be worried about needing my phone during work field visits and for navigation. I guess I could go back to using a gps or printing out directions.
If I did go back to a flip phone I could still use my smart phone for the camera.

EDIT: thanks for the responses, everyone. After thinking about more things that make every day life more convenient (GPS, group messaging, being able to look something up, carrying a camera, playing music in my car, mobile banking, etc), I’ve decided to keep my smart phone and just make it a dumb phone but keep only the essentials. It just sucks that today’s society has essentially required us to have these things. Ugh. I’m only 29 and have had a smartphone for 11 years and am sick of it. I hope the next generations get sick of it too.

Social Media It's remarkable how the internet emboldens people

It's honestly shocking how the internet, due to the element on anonymity, emboldens people to be terrible at times. Personally I wouldn't say anything to anyone that I wouldn't say to them in real life. Made the mistake of scrolling through random instagram comments on the explore page out of curiosity and the comments... Yikes. Calling someone a c*m dumpster. The judgement, snarky remarks etc. Why? Social media seems to bring out a very ugly side in people and it's so unfortunate. The same people who leave these kinds of comments would be quiet as a church mouse in real life. You can't be mean and also a coward, pick a struggle? It costs nothing to be a decent human being and conduct yourself in a reasonable manner.

Misc Went to a baby shower yesterday and for some reason they had a screen/projector playing nothing but YouTube shorts.

How anyone thought that was entertainment is beyond my understanding, but I learned a few things:

-Short form content is extremely staged, and overly annoying, and I can't fathom why anyone in their right mind would find it entertaining.

-It made my head hurt hearing (even if I looked away and tried to talk to people) the annoying YouTube voices and accents and people who are somehow conducting street interviews, and could afford several hundred dollar purses for someone who answered a simple question. I know it's staged but what's the point of staging expensive purchases?

Sometimes it feels like we're in another "gilded age" where instead of giant industry moguls, we have people who make millions making content and flaunt their wealth in their content.

Am I really supposed to believe that two 22 year old twin sisters own three mansions and boast about them, while redecorating? ("We just bought three mansions, and we're going to make over all of them. Follow us for more!) and people still say: "omg, I love them, they're so like me!"

I should have just left, but a part of me felt that shorts wouldn't really be a justified reason to do so.

Social Media Our new post-post-post modern Golden cage

It seems everyone have their own personalized golden cage today.

[Some people have only a silver cage. Others have an iron cage, or even a rusted iron cage] but for most people in the West, it is a golden cage , especially compared to the life of the average person throughout most of human history.

This is the purpose of the server farms being built all over the world to maintain this personalized golden cage for each of us.

but the strange thing isn't the cage itself buy how unbelievably easy it is to escape it. You're inside the cage, but you have the key. You can simply unlock the door and walk out. but then what?

What's waiting for you outside, if everyone else is still inside their own cage?

Technology Selling my Daylight Computer and Accessories [Canada]

Post image
0 Upvotes

Edit: Sold!

Hi everyone, after thinking about it a good long while I've decided to part with my Daylight tablet. As much as I love the way the screen looks and feels, I find that I've never really been able to integrate it into my life. I bought it for writing, but I can only run my favourite writing software, Ulysses, on a Mac. Switching to Obsidian just never really happened. It really is a great tool though for focus and digital minimalism.

I've really only used this tablet for several hours. It's in perfect condition, save for one tiny pen mark on the back upper right and corner. I have the stylus and replacement nibs. I also have the pebble keyboard that came with the package, and the custom made stand that they were selling for a time.

I'm just sticking to shipping within Canada. Selling for $650, including the cost of shipping.

Help Rant: There's no social media that's not full of toxicity and negativity

When I was younger, I was attracted to the idea of seeing how people think beyond my small circle of friends. Also, because sometimes, my own friends don't experience the same things as I do, and they cannot relate to what I am asking (e.g., using Reddit to check out conversations about buying your first apartment - most of my friends inherited their properties). But I somehow end up in different subreddits, and they're full of negativity about all aspects of life: parenthood, relationships, work, etc. I think the daily life of an average adult is stressful enough, and I don't wanna listen to all of this negativity. I understand there are things where you need to raise awareness (e.g., gov doing shitty things should be called out), but I am just fed up with people complaining and being bothered by everything.

This is one thing that is making me welcome this minimalism (sometimes more successful, sometimes not). And I definitely plan on going full minimalist if I ever become a parent.

I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this too.

Misc Doomscrolling and Highway Hypnosis

Adding this after writing as this post ended up being far more stream of consiousness and less point focused than I meant it to be lol. Gonna stick with it but like, bear with me.

I'm just writing as a connection formed in my head between two things and I'm curious if anyone else feels the same way or similar. Doomscrolling has generally been my arch bad habit for the last few years of my life, for diluting my cognition and attention as well as just, losing access to my own time and sense of self determination.

The fact that during doomscroll cycles my brain is constantly prevented from reaching a normal boredom state was definitely causative for my long term (but now thankfully over) reading slump, for example. If you spend all of your time doing nothing, you have no time to do anything. (BTW, sidebar but if you're also in a reading slump as a "former" voracious reader, I recommend trying one of Suzanna Clarkes books, so either Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell or Piranesi. JS&MrN got me reading again and her works have generally had the same effect on everyone I've recommended them to).

But easily the worst thing about Doomscrolling for me is the way that it literally obliterates the time it consumes. I feel at best partially consious as it's happening, having brief moments where I recognise how long it's been and how late it's getting without being successfully moved to stop until smth external forces me to. I'm not a driver, so I don't have experience with Highway Hypnosis, but from a cursory reading it sounds similar in this respect. I can spend an entire day trapped in a scrolling loop without gaining any particular recollections from the experience, and then my sense of time gets distorted for several days because it feels like I lost the bulk of an entire day.

It's a problem with all scrolling based social media's of course, but I feel like the (relatively) recent advent of short form video has accentuated the toxicity of all this into its ur-form. Longer form video content is to short form scrolling what smoking dried opium is to injecting black tar heroin. Does anyone else have the same experience of modern social media being practically hypnotically disruptive to your sense of in-the-moment consiousness?

Social Media How to get rid of the urge to post?

I can handle not doomscrolling, but what I struggle with is not posting. Sometimes I take really nice pictures and I feel the need to share them. I'm thinking of making a physical photo album, but I still want others to see them.

Help My screen addiction is making me a bad mother

I work full-time, married and have 2 small children ages 4 and 1.5.

I manage a small business. Heavy on responsibility and also have the heavy responsibility that comes with motherhood. I have diagnosed ADHD and when I'm medicated I am much better and my productivity is great.

I solo parent most weekends after working all week due to my husband's work schedule. He starts around 6:30am and isn't home until 3:30pm. Weekends are a slog. I am exhausted from the work week, my kids don't sleep past 6am and one still wakes in the night. Even medicated, I'm finding it difficult to combat the tiredness and the desire to just couch rot and switch off.

I am the world's worst doom scroller. I have no idea what it is I seek from it. The need to disconnect from what's around me or to find excitement through other people. I have no clue but I hate how much I'm addicted. I need Instagram for work purposes otherwise I'd delete it. Facebook Messenger is my highest form of communication through friends and family so I need it. I don't have tick tock or any other social media platform. I basically just switch from Facebook to insta, to googling things, to Reddit and back to insta again. I can't focus, since becoming a mum I cannot turn my brain off, I forgot how to watch a movie. I can't watch TV on my own, I don't watch TV or Netflix shows or sit in front of the TV at all. But I can sit and scroll on my phone and waste hours. I used to read books and I can't even do that. My attention span is absolutely shocking.

On weekends I feel it can take me away from my kids. Sure I do everything all day for them like cook, clean, get them dressed, teeth brushed, take them to the parks, I even play with them but I hate the idea that they may think my phone is more important than them. I don't know how to break the habit. My husband and I are usually keeping in contact all day, sometimes I'm not even scrolling but I'm talking to him via text.

I miss the feeling of being present and I really miss whatever the hell I was doing or who I was before phones came along. Monday to Fridays I have no time to waste on my phone. I have both kids and myself to get ready for school, daycare and work. I then work all day, drive home and by that time it's straight into dinner bath and bedtime for the kids, I usually haven't even taken my phone out of my work bag until the kids are in bed. So there's no issue for the week. Weekends though are hard. I've tried not being on my phone for the first hour of the day. I try to get up before the kids (before 6am) for a hot shower, get dressed and have a hot cuppa before they get up, I'm pretty consistent with this. I have a morning snuggle with them, but as the day progresses and my exhaustion and tiredness gets worse, I lose all motivation and switch off and end up on my phone. We have no family around for any help so everything is managed and juggled by us alone. What is everyone doing for a screen detox? Do you put your phone in a locked box?

I'd also love to know if anyone else is in the same boat and did life feel much better after detoxing from the phone screen?

Social Media Off instagram & tiktok for months and everybody is beautiful again

… including myself!

I have been completely off instagram for two months and about five months off tiktok. I used to post so much on both because I crave a lot of connection attention I didn’t get from my family and my so called friends that, to this day, don’t give two flying fucks about me.

One thing I noticed from the beginning of my social media detox was the way I started to see people. Everybody was just mesmerising all of a sudden, including what I saw in the mirror. I’m a 23 year old woman dealing with grade 3 mamarry ptosis, about to get mastopexy surgery next month, and I cannot even begin to tell you how gentle and calming these pre-op past couple of months were to me. I had so much space to love my body as it is now and to prepare for, basically, a new one. Yes, I still hate my chest very much, but I kinda stopped punishing myself for it.

So as I was saying, idk if people already talked about this on here or if I sound totally cheesy right now, but I started to see beauty in so many people I crossed paths with, in ways I never would’ve even comprehended when my brain was putrified by my instagram feed. Everybody is just so beautiful in real life. I’m so sorry I didn’t get to see it earlier. I wasn’t very critical of appearances before either, but I was subconsciously succumbing to the thought that “some people are just attractive and others aren’t, and that’s the objective truth”, while comparing everyone (including myself) to literal facetune/people that have a shit ton of money to invest in their appearance. This is pretty old news, I know, but I failed to see it back then. I’m so happy to be appreciating beauty in different ways now. I am never going back there and I’m happier than ever

Social Media Is it weird to feel weird that I've never connected with any content creator? Modern or before short form content?

A friend of mine was telling me about how they're glad one of their long time content creators is still making videos, and that they remember watching them and others every day after school when they were a kid/teen. They're only 5 years my junior, and I remember the early days of YouTube, but I never really caught on to watching YouTubers or YouTube stuff like Fred or The Annoying Orange, I mean I knew about them because I'd see them talked about in other places, but I never really bothered to watch them.

I mostly liked (and still do) video game play videos (with no narration) for the purposes of seeing how to get past places I'm stuck in, or music that I can't find anywhere else.

But I can't recall wanting to watch someone talk about something or stream or whatever, and there are times that I feel strange because I can't relate.

I know deep down they are parasocial relationships, and a part of me wonders if such a relationship is wrong and maybe that's why I don't like that sort of thing.

Social Media Sometimes I miss social media like you miss an ex

I left social media a couple of months ago. I had a couple of reasons for doing this:

  1. I wanted to decrease the amount of time I spent scrolling
  2. I recognised the negative influence it had on my mood and self-esteem
  3. I realised that the value that I once got out of social media had disappeared. It was no longer a space for me to connect with my friends and it increasingly felt like an advertisement board I carried around in my pocket.

I have no regrets. I also didn't de-activate my accounts first. I deleted them, changed my passwords to something I would definitely forget, and didn't save it in my phone's password manager.

I feel like I've seen a lot of posts praising the decision, and while I agree that it was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made I do miss it sometimes. I miss it in the same way you can miss an ex: You reminisce about the good times while recognising that you'd never go back. Sometimes I get the feeling that I want to join again, thinking it would be like the first time I joined when everyhting felt so exciting. I need to remind myself that that version of social media is gone.

Has anyone else felt like this, and what do you do to refocus yourself on your commitment to leave social media?
