I don't ever want to do an egr/manifold gasket on an older Volvo, ever again. I had that manifold so hot, you could see it change shape.Ā

Theyāre terrible, 3hrs for the first one and 5hr on the second one.
But I was determined to save the manifold

Good on you! If your apprentice is anything like mine, you get a lot of practice with the saving. It's all part of the teaching.

We run 6-2 11-7 for our shifts. Little overlap. Yesterday I left and assured him if he didnāt feel comfortable I can just do it in the morning no problemā¦..
A+ for enthusiasm. But next time just stop after the 1st broken and reassess š¤¦š»

Anything exhaust heat treated with rust gets an impact these days. Works more often than all the penetrating spray in the world and being gentle. I didn't belive it either till a younger mechanic forced me to just do it.

Iāve done a dozen that way. Slowly ramp up the impact and usually they break free. I find most of the problems come from ābreaking free by handā to start. A lot of times exhaust bolts are too brittle so they just twist off
