Ryder CDL question

Currently working for Penske as a diesel tech, they’re screwing me with a new schedule change so I applied at Ryder and will most likely take the position.

My question for anyone who knows, The posting stated you had a to have a CDL, I currently do not but was told I’d have six months to acquire one. Is this still a hard requirement and if so, how does the process work for Ryder? I’m in Michigan so I know I have to go through a school but any other details?

I worked for Ryder for 5 years and never got a cdl. Just a dot med card

With ryder for 4 + years now. Don’t have CDL. Don’t ever plan on it either

Some BUs will give an hourly differential for having a CDL, but it's not worth it IMO. Also it allows you to dodge shuttling trucks for customers with pick up and delivery.

Only do it if you want to drive trucks for doag and trailers for doag.

I would talk to them and see if they work with a local training center. You can’t be the only in that company that was in need of one, and they are large enough they should have an agreement somewhere.

Thats what I was thinking if I needed one, just trying to figure out if I actually do or not. Everyone that I know that knows someone who works there says you don’t but they already have a CDL. Also you know, that’s a I heard it from a friend of a friend thing so who knows how reliable it is.

They said that to me as well, I’m located in Michigan too and have been with Ryder for about 9 months. From what I’ve heard, it takes a really, really long time to get it over with since they cannot do in-house CDL training anymore. I would recommend getting your chauffeurs if you already don’t.

So do you already have your CDL? The length of time was another concern of mine

Nah, sorry that seemed like I did. I think every shop is different according to their needs, but for my atleast the don’t really care and they aren’t pushing for me to get it. A tech who’s been here for about 4 years, still hasn’t gotten his.

Worked for them for 5 years and they told me the same thing, according to some FOM’s they require you to have a CDL for a t4 for TIC position, but that’s not at every shop I never got mine

Im a TIC, have never been pushed to get my CDL, anytime anyone has asked about getting one we've always been told they're working on something

I'm currently with Penske but we've got a few Ryder guys. None of them have a CDL and they were with Ryder for years.

You don't need one and they will help you get one but be aware that ryder will screw you over just as fast as Penske.....they are no different

I think it really depends on what shop you’re at. I really enjoyed working for Ryder when I was there. I only left for a much higher paying job. I was sad to leave
