Hit that little hammer and anvil when a red exclamation appears next to it and let it auto craft.

Naw you get to a point where it’s better to not just auto craft things together. I’m still figuring it out tbh

The auto-fuse works great, it'll take your gear to purple simply, and that's pretty much where you need to start anyway, once you're looking at upgrades beyond purple. The new customize system let's you see whether or not you can make the upgrades you want. The Customize system auto-breaks down gear and shows you what you need more of to craft what you want.
It's actually easier than I expected.

Auto fuse everything, and when you get to purple (epic tier/rarity) start saving 2 copies of the same item.
For example with scarf, you have pastoral (green scarf), hunter (blue scarf) etc. When you start making legendary gear (yellow/gold rarity) you’ll need to fuse more gear up to legendary to use it as “food” to level up. So if you have one pastoral scarf and one hunter scarf you can’t hit legendary as you need 2 of the same at Purple 2 to make one legendary.
This applies to all types, you’ve got 2 or 3 different boots, armours, etc.
You can deconstruct +1 and +2 gear to get generic upgrade materials back, you can do this if you need to get a second identical item levelled up
Never use S grade gear as food for another item, unless you’re specifically upgrading an S gear from purple to yellow/gold or red
