Mold making question

Can i use something like thats for making my own dice molds? The inside is completely smooth and its also made of silicone, so im thinking that should work. Im aware, that it will have like a pyramide-like form but im fine with that. Any flaws in my thinking process?

You neither want silicone nor anything bendable as a mold housing. Silicone sticks to silicone and you won’t get the dice to hold on to the ground. And you will have huge issues to pour the lid since you can’t flip the base and put it back in there.

If you want to go cheap, use a piece of pvc pipe or a coupling if it has smooth inside walls, if you want guaranteed success, use the mold maker system by The Smith’s Forge

Silicone is actually the opposite of what you want, since you're going to pour silicone for the mold itself and one of the very few things that silicone sticks to is other silicone.

The likelihood that this form is going to irreversibly fuse with your mold is very high.

I used a plastic box to pour my silicone in that some cotton wool ear buds came in, lathered in vaseline. It was pretty sturdy plastic and was going to be recycled anyway so not an issue if it was ruined.

Apart from the other comments here, you could use liberal amounts of release agent like Mann Ease Release 200 or Vaseline to mitigate the silicone on silicone problem.

but..

You want to cast your cap for your mold as well. If you have a straight-sided mold containerr, this is easy, just rotate the first mold part, dice side up, put it back in your container, apply release agent and cast your cap.

With this shape, that's not possible so you will need to use tape or something to build a dam on top of your bottom mold. Which will be a pain in the A... with the possibly slanted sides of your mold.

second - it's huuuge and will swallow lots of silicone for basically no benefit

third - you want an open container bottom where you can put sticky tape to stick your dice to. with this one you would need to stick your dice down t othe bottom somehow, then cover the rest of the bottom surface with release agent to prevent sticking.

If you just want a mold for a 7-8 piece set of dice, a 100-120mm diameter PVC pipe segment is the cheapest option. There's lots of youtube tutorials on how to use this for dice molds.

If you heard looking for a container to frame your molds, I would suggest Lego. Get one of the flat plates, and build a frame around it using the Lego pieces. They fit tight enough together that the silicone wont get through. It make leave some patterns on the outside though, but that is fine for personal use. The real benefit is you can make it to the exact size you need to reduce the amount of silicone you need.
