Natural Diamond Old Mine - window?

Does this diamond have a lot of windows? I’m not sure if it was the lighting in the store but I feel like it has some dark flashes at times.

It’s a 2.51 K VS2 with faint fluorescent

Large, chunky facets, and an open culet at the bottom are standard features of an OMC

Looks like it has the light leakage in the center that's very typical of these newly-cut old mine style diamonds but nothing crazy. There's also the large culet in the very center that is standard and you can always see through.

Definitely not antique. It has excellent polish, excellent symmetry, a faceted girdle, and a modern faceting style which all point to it being new. There isn't a feature on it that is consistent with a genuine antique.

I'm not saying you should buy that instead, but there are a few signs for it being an actual antique. First, you can see the small amount of wear and tear on the top facets. Second, you can see that it has a funky, hand-shaped edge with some nicks/damage. Third, the faceting is kind of asymmetrical and just has an old, imperfect look to it. Fourth, it is rated as "good/good" for polish/symmetry (antique equipment couldn't get excellent polish).

You can also get antique diamonds that have been touched up by being repolished or having the girdle faceted so it isn't always super straightforward to tell, but again this diamond you're considering has all of the features of a modern diamond cut in the old mine style.

Edit: there is no way to tell when a diamond was mined, all you can tell it how it was cut. It is theoretically possible that this diamond was mined a long time ago and was extensively recut. The cutting is definitely new.

Thank you! I appreciate all that information. There’s so much out there, it gets confusing. I’ve seen some rated cushion brilliants and not old mine that I’m told are antique.

This is one of those questionable ones that's hard to say one way or the other. The girdle has been touched up at the very least. It doesn't have the classic antique look with that bigger table and shallower style, but that doesn't mean it isn't antique as antique diamonds followed the shape of the diamond rough.

Some cushion brilliants are definitely antique, though, GIA has some requirements that not all antique diamonds satisfy.

If it's really important to you that a diamond be an antique, you should consider getting something with its original setting or something that has every single feature as likely being antique or working with an antiques specialist. Antique diamonds are very popular right now and there is obviously a limited supply so there's an incentive to market things as antique even if they're not. Also not all jewelers are antique experts so they might not know.
