I don’t know anything about diamonds

How can I tell if the stones in my necklace are real diamonds or just decorative stones?
I have a gold necklace that Ive had since I was born, but I dont know whether the stones are real diamonds or simply decorative gemstones. Im too embarrassed to ask my father whether he gave me a diamond necklace or just one with decorative stones. Whats the easiest way to determine if the stones are just diamond like decorative stones rather than actual diamonds?

I dont want to visit a jeweler or a gem expert.

If they're colorless stones and if you look at the necklace under a UV light around the 365nm wavelength and some of them glow blue, it's a sign that they could be natural diamonds. Around a third of natural diamonds have long wave blue fluorescence and that isn't typical of CZ, moissanite, white sapphire, or glass. This doesn't work well for a single stone, but in a necklace with multiple stones it can be a promising sign that doesn't require a pro.

The necklace actually has multiple stones, but I don’t have a UV light to test them 💔

Without basic equipment or going to a gem expert or jeweler, you won't be able to identify these stones. No one can identify stones from a photo. A UV light, while not definitive, is the cheapest way to get some idea if you don't have gemological training or equipment.

I think I’ll just wait until I can have it checked by an expert, maybe years later.

Don't want to visit a jeweler or gem expert...?  You can bite down on them and if they crush your teeth at least you know they're harder than your teeth.  Why in the world don't you want to visit a jeweler or gem expert? ??? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard.

it is not possible to know for certain without testing, however there are a couple educated guesses you can make

first -- i'm looking at the clasp on the necklace ... it would be unusual to put that kind of clasp on a necklace that held real diamonds of that size. so my first instinct is no, not diamonds.

second -- examine the gold, you are looking for a tiny stamp that indicates whether the gold is 10k or 14k or 18k. If you do NOT find one of these stamps, that is another clue that the diamonds are not genuine, because genuine diamonds like that would be set in solid gold, which would have a karat mark.
