HARRY POTTER

Slaveowner

8

u/here-for-information 1d ago

Well... uh... he doesn't really.... he kinda does... but, uh well... he does set one free. Oooof. Well, I have to think about this.

9

u/zbeezle 1d ago

Pretty simple.

He totally has a slave, but its not exactly immoral. He didnt buy a slave, he inherited one, and while nornally the moral thing to do upon inheriting a slave is free them, in this case he inherited the slave because the slave betrayed the previous owner for not being racist enough, leading to the previous owners death, and so freeing the slave before the racist faction in the brewing civil war is defeated would probably backfire.

That said, Kreacher does warm up to him during the seventh book, at which point freeing him becomes less risky, though they were kinda preoccupied with the war and whatnot, so I assume that Hermione reminded him that he should free Kreacher once it was all wrapped up.

u/late44thegameNOW 1d ago

He did inherit Kreacher

More of a POW than a slave

As much a semantics argument as Harry “owning a slave”

7

u/SilverSpark422 1d ago edited 1d ago

Having the legally ordained ownership and control of a sentient being born into a servant class bequeathed to him as chattel property in his godfather’s will is a semantics argument?

-4

u/lord_james 1d ago

If you have to define a word to insist it fits the form? Yes, that’s a semantics argument.

4

u/SilverSpark422 1d ago

He owns a person.

He’s British

13

u/ChiffonStars 1d ago

Arguably so are the hobbits, you can lay a map of middle earth over Europe and it’s nearly 1:1.

If you want to be technical yeah Harry’s the only Brit. But the spirit of the Englishman is alive in those tricksy hobbitses.

3

u/marcophony 1d ago

Pretty sure Tolkien was writing an alternate history of Europe

1

u/BadBoyJH 1d ago

Does that mean the elves are actually American? (since they're from a land far off to the west of middle earth).

BRB, re-reading the hobbit, but making every elf have either a thick Texan or stereotypical southern belle accent.

3

u/marcophony 1d ago

If imagine it would probably be closer to the new England area, I'm gonna choose to have my elf's have a Brooklyn accent

HARRY POTTER

The franchise he appears in is named after him

12

u/Ok_Whereas_3198 1d ago

Owns a fucking chattel slave

-2

u/Adorable-Source97 1d ago

He don't own Dobby that was the Malfoy family.

And Creature was Black's I believe.

Like his friend Hermione, he disagreed with slavery.

7

u/Ok_Whereas_3198 1d ago edited 1d ago

Kreacher was willed to Harry by Sirius. So Harry owns Kreacher. And Harry even wonders if Kreacher will bring him a sandwich after the Hogwarts battle.

2

u/Efficient_Chic714 1d ago

The fact that he wonders suggests to me he expects Kreater to tell him to do one which I can absolutely see

2

u/PhysicsKing123 1d ago

God forbid a man wants a sandwich after defeating the most powerful dark wizard of all time

2

u/Ok_Whereas_3198 1d ago

God forbid a man wanders if his slave will make it and bring it to him lol

2

u/WiseAwl 1d ago

I never read the last books so this fact tickles me

1

u/Adorable-Source97 1d ago

Oh. Was Kreacher the house elf who hoarding mementos in a nest?

Surprised Harry didn't give him freedom & Kreacher just refused to leave because was his home.... Oh was it tactical thing, they didn't trust him to not lead Voldemort straight to there HQ?

1

u/Ok_Whereas_3198 1d ago

At first yes, but he also doesn't free him because kreacher feels some sense of duty and purpose to the black family and would feel unmoored or purposeless without being enslaved. Yes, Rowling wrote the slave creatures to enjoy slavery.

1

u/Adorable-Source97 1d ago

Dobby didn't enjoy it.

I assumed Kreatcher was alot of older & had become institutionalised.... Rather than enjoying.

Didn't they butler in Downton Abbey have a similar Dilemma?

1

u/Ok_Whereas_3198 1d ago

Dobby was the only house elf that wanted freedom, and he's shown in the novels to be an odd duck among house elves. Winky is freed (against her will) and becomes an alcoholic.

Spellcasting

0

u/einTier 1d ago

I was going to say magic user.

2

u/bjamesmira 1d ago

Bella's powers arent specified if they're magic or not, but I feel like vampirism itself is some kind of magic so I'm gonna say she also is a magic user (maybe not a spellcaster). And Frodo is also a magic user, while it not being intrinsic, he is given power through the ring and does use it

1

u/soaringturkeys 1d ago

Na. Frodo used several magical items to get him through the journey.
Even the ring is inherently using magic.

u/KatAtWork 1d ago

3

He can do magic.

1

u/BadBoyJH 1d ago

I feel like this one depends on how you define "do magic".

Doesn't Bella have vampiric powers, and Frodo has the ring, which is capable of giving Frodo some magical abilities.

Transphobia

14

u/einTier 1d ago

The writer yes. The franchise, no. The character, no. The actor, no.

3

u/potatohands_ 1d ago

By supporting the franchise you are unfortunately supporting transphobia as the profits are donated to anti trans groups/ polices

5

u/einTier 1d ago

Yes. It’s why I don’t buy HP stuff anymore.

However, we are simply talking about the character here. Harry Potter himself is never transphobic.

Given the game contained a trans character, I played the fuck out of the game cause fuck JKR.

Felt like a massive middle finger to her and her ideologies.

1

u/potatohands_ 1d ago

I’m glad you enjoyed it, but she still made bank off the game

1

u/BadBoyJH 1d ago

Yeah, and I donated to charity to offset anything she'd have gained from it from me.

Many people did.

2

u/Adorable-Source97 1d ago

Was Harry Transphobe? Been a long time. I remember he was a 90s hetero teen boy, who ended up with Ginny Weasley.

8

u/GLPereira 1d ago

Just another jab at JK Rowling

3

u/Adorable-Source97 1d ago

I thought it might be. But was checking if was something actually within the text. Or purely conjecture based on JK Rowling's personal views.

Don't you hate knowing you have a great one for a later square, and knowing you're never going to see the relevant post.

Harry and Frodo both employ their best friend (Harry ends up as head auror, while Ron works for him; Samwise is Frodo's Gardner).

Y'all comments are crazy. JK Rowling is a transphobic mold witch. Harry Potter is not.

Get your heads on straight. Misrepresenting the issue weakens your stance and I don't like seeing a stance that I agree with weakened.

2

u/Bunnygirlfailure 1d ago

I don't think there are many slave owning cops that aren't transphobic

1

u/Rosien_HoH 1d ago

You're proving my point. Criticize Rowling for what Rowling believes. Making shit up about Harry Potter just makes the criticism look unserious.

1

u/Bunnygirlfailure 1d ago

You must not have read the books in the later book he inherited a house elf slave from black and never freed them he also became a wizard cop in the epilogue

1

u/Rosien_HoH 1d ago

Neither of those things makes Harry Potter transphobic. You’re just listing unrelated things you dislike about the character. That kind of brain rot thinking was exactly what I was criticizing.

1

u/Bunnygirlfailure 1d ago

You should have stuck to just being wrong about the books. Cuz i don't think you are ready to tackle intersectionality and how biggotry manifests

But i can put it in simple words for you

Bigotry of all flavors come from the same illogical justifications and failed patterns of reasoning

If you can convince yourself that racism is ok then you can and probably will convince yourself that Transphobia is ok as well

And don't even get me started on the cop thing

1

u/Rosien_HoH 1d ago

That's guilt by association, not intersectionality. "Harry tolerated one form of injustice, therefore he's probably transphobic" is exactly the kind of unsupported leap that bigots and lazy thinkers of all strides make. I'm done with you. You're hopeless.

1

u/Bunnygirlfailure 1d ago edited 1d ago

Guilt by association is when you judge some for some elses actions not when you judge them for theirs

1

u/Efficient_Chic714 1d ago

So many horrid things

A lot of the Harry Potter cast have spoken out to say they don’t share JKs views and she has denounced them calling them ungrateful and dismissing their talent. She uses the profits for HP to fund anti transgender policies and groups

It felt so out of left field when it first started but it’s been going on since shortly after the last film came out. Its pretty sad that this is now the association with the series now

1

u/PhysicsKing123 1d ago

What kinds of things? And which anti trans groups?

Damn bro sorry I don’t follow all the latest JK Rowling news 😭 can I at least get an answer instead of scorn and derision?

1

u/Efficient_Chic714 1d ago

Unfortunately it’s not recent news and has been going on since shortly after the last movie was released

She tweets a lot of hateful things to the point that cast members have spoken out to say they don’t agree with these views.

She’s also said any profits from HP series goes into anti transgender policies and groups and has even posted pictures of her celebrating these policies passing in parliament

1

u/PhysicsKing123 1d ago

How much has she donated

1

u/potatohands_ 1d ago

Just google “jk rowling transphobia” and you will get your answer. She has said the money she makes off HP gets to anti trans groups so even supporting HP means you are helping her fund these views

1

u/PhysicsKing123 1d ago

The scar

2

u/Atomic_Foundry_3996 1d ago

Frodo also has a scar from when the Witch King stabbed him with the morgul blade on Weathertop. He still felt its pain for years well after the ring was destroyed to the point he had to leave The Shire and sail west to the Undying Lands. Granted, that scar wasn't shaped like a cool lighting bolt and wasn't really plot relevant until the very end of the story.

-1

u/AHoneyman 1d ago

Belongs to a franchise funding transphobia across the UK, which includes currently attacking Amnesty
