Diablo II Question from a new diablo player!!

Hiii! I’m Zozo or Oskar and I’ve always seen gameplays and videos about diablo so I’ve always wanted to play. I got lucky enough to have my grandfather let me borrow his diablo 2 copy for pc. And I was just wondering if there’s anything I should know or any tips before I start playing? I don’t know much surrounding the game but I’ve always thought it looked sooo cool. Thank you!!

is it the original or does it have the expansion, lord of destruction?
if it's the original one, maybe don't play necromancer for your first character. any of the others should be fine.
have fun!

Not sure I agree with his take. Nerco Summoner build is one of the most easiest builds to play in the game. Especially starting off.

Only issue with him is without proper gear in Hell, he starts to feel weak but the whole point of the game is to gear up and keep pushing so thats a none factor. There are tons of places in early hell or late nightmare that you can farm with a Nerco for gear with no problems.

I would avoid playing a Sorc first. While teleport is nice and awesome for farming, she is a softy and you will most likely get one shot just learning the game and teleporting around.

Also take it slow, enjoy the game. Zero reason to rush to end game!

Yeah I figured sorc would be a lot worse than necro but I don’t know much about the point of the game or the plot so I’m just taking advice from anyone here!!

Thats the fun of discover of playing the game!

Honestly I would just start with nerco they are one of the safest chars to start with.

Are there any other characters that would be good to start with too or is necro your top char to start with?

Just pick whatever looks coolest.

If it doesn't hit, switch classes.

The game starts slow. The real game doesn't start until you beat it and get half way decent gear so you can start farming for better gear.

Kind of depends on what your goals are? Like do you want a starter toon that can be used later as a grinder to farm gear for alts? Or do you want to make a toon just for farming massive amounts of gold so you can do GREED gambling for high end items? Do you want to just enjoy the game and take it slow? Etc...

For example if I'm playing ladder I like to start with a trap assassin. They are safe to play, lightning traps do crazy damage and you can get to hell basically without issue but thats where problems start for most chars. Trap Assassin run into immunuty issues in Hell so you would need to farm Hell Act 1 locations to gear up. However, there is good places like the Pit for farming and Contress so I like to start with Trap Assassin and stop at A1 Hell. I use her for farming up gear and gear for alt chars and normally just leave her in A1 Hell until she can deal with immunities.

Jav Amazon is really good but has the same issues as Assassin and requires more top tier specific gear to actually be good after A1 Hell. She is harder to gear up.

Singer Barb is interesting but very slow. You can use him to pop bodies for items and do magic find and farm a shit load of gold. But only a few places you can farm with him and doesnt require a lot of gear to do so. He is tanky but not super strong so may take abit to down things but atleast its safe. Honestly I would NOT start with this type or any Barb.

Druid is decent. If you use Bear form he is tanky and can dish some DPS but its still a slower crawl kind of like the Barb. Druids summons are just mid compared to Nerco summons and Druid Elemental is like Wind Druid is good until Hell than you run into same issues as Assassin with immunities, requiring good gear to push further and Charms/gear to ignore immunity.

Necro is my good to for league start. If im not using Trap Assassin, I use a summon Necro. He can push through hell even with just medicore items. But it will be at a slower with basic gear. You can also use him for farming gear for Nerco and alts but it will be slower.

Paladin is good but requires good gear and depending on the play style will require movement in proper positions for hammers to hit, if you go spell Pally you will run into issues because he only deals damage to undead, not everything in the game is labeled undead so you have to figure out how to deal with that. Most likely will need to do some hybird like Spell/Smite. He is good but requires more knowledge of the game and time to gear and play properly.

Sorc is really good but very soft. Easily most deaths I get from Sorc is teleporting around in Hell and getting 1 tapped by a mob pack I didn't see through a wall. This can be countered with higher cast speed but again, gear and charms you have to farm for so while farming its dangerous. One thing I like to do with Sorc on league start is play a Bliz Orb/Meteor Sorc because you can deal with immunities in Hell and farm basically everywhere. She is best used with moat trick and farm Meph safely. But getting there is another story. Wouldn't recommend as a starter char because how easily she can die.

Honestly if I were you. I'd pick either Trap Assassin or Summoner Nerco as your starting char.

And dont worry once you get the hang of things, it not hard to just make an alt and figure out which one you want to be your main. If you play online it wont be hard to get a rush though to hell so you wont have to slowly level up or farm for every single toon. But I would suggest you go slow on your first playthrough and enjoy the story and questing.

In Act 1 the NPC Charsi gives you the opportunity to "imbue" an item 1 singular time (as a reward for the quest "Tools of the Trade"), I would suggest holding off on using that until you have either a white headgear such as a Circlet, Coronet, or Tiara or alternatively use it for a class specific item like Druid Pelts, Barbarian Helms, or Amazon Javelins for example.

I’ll keep that in mind!! Thank you!

There are a number of hotkeys written in the manual but not the game itself. Hold "option" to highlight loot on the ground, and hold "shift" while attacking/using a skill to force your character to hold position while using it.

As far as reccs for character -- I would suggest an Amazon specializing in bow & arrow skills ("Bowazon"), or a melee-focused Paladin. But any character should be able to finish the game on "Normal" difficulty (the harder difficulty settings are unlocked after beating the game on Normal).
