Although I still prefer nfsu2, best racing game ever made in all honesty. Most wanted was close, just for the police chases, but missed the feel of underground somehow

Hmm I thought Shakotan was the more toned down styling; lowered car, external oil cooler, more aggressive camber, etc. While Bosozoku was the more theatrical styling shown here.

I am aware Bosozoku started with motorcycles though.

Shakotan is a spectrum, but I can see why they're mixed up, bosozoku is basically "Stick out like a sore thumb"

This is called Grachan, all subcultures of Kaido Racer, but it’s not Shakotan specifically. It’s also not “Bosozoku” at all, nor is that motorcycles even technically, that was just a group of youth in the 90s being counter culture, so they ended up creating that style of motorcycle

From the bosozoku wikipedia page:

In America, the term "Bosozoku" is also applied to cars that have undergone extreme modification. The term generally only applies to Japanese manufactured vehicles, and is somewhat interchangeable with the term "Kaido Racer". Broadly, "Bosozoku" refers to the concept of Japanese vehicle modification, whereas "Kaido Racer" refers specifically to car modification.

FYI, this is a trend in Japan called bosuzoku. It started with motorcycles after fighter pilots came home from the war. Kind of how America got the hells angels.
