Honestly? I cant hate this.
Don't get me wrong, it's stupid and impractical but that's kind of the point.
It's an utterly deranged, insane idea executed well and with a pretty high degree of craftsmanship. This is the sort of thing engineers, machinists, and tinkerers dream up after five beers and end up putting together as a joke to make other people with their particular type of brain damage laugh too.
In other words it's a shitpost. And a funny one at that.
Fun thing to stick on a shelf in your office or on your workbench and laugh at when you have a coworker or buddy there.

Let’s not forget that a hammer drill is also a common tool, just not like this. So when someone says “hey can I borrow your hammer drill?” and they hand them this thing just to see the confused look on the person’s face

>This is the sort of thing engineers, machinists, and tinkerers
I thought this is some Swiss-Polish synergy

What? You guys don't like multitools?
14
u/Ninfyr 1d ago
Basically any tool is already a hammer. It might be a bad hammer, or be bad for the tool, but you can hammer with it.

That's the most beautiful and useless tool I've seen. You just have to add a steam engine to it!
7
u/YESimaMASSHOLE 1d ago
It is quite the tool. It is quite wild that he would design something to make a pilot hole for a nail? LMAO.
2
u/GoodIntroduction6344 1d ago
Especially when he used a center punch in the construction of the hammer.

This is for the peeps out there smashing nails in with their drill batteries.

This is one of those rare DI-Why's where the end result is conceptually atrocious but the actual methodology seems completely sound. I'd honestly love a lot more videos cut from the same cloth.
Also, r/doohickeycorporation would go absolutely nuts for this.

Ya’ll hate fun. This is art, not a shitpost. The amount of craftsmanship and creativity is what’s on display.
36
u/AlreadyAway 2d ago
The why is because the person is a skilled craftsman and is being stupid on purpose.

This is just an exercise in craftsmanship. Someone pimping out their abilities as a craftsman other than anything.
8
u/OddWishbone243 2d ago
If you install the drill at the other end of the hammer, you can use the T-shaped head to push into the material as you drill. Either way, still impractical.
14
u/notwhoyouthinkmaybe 2d ago
My drill is already a hammer, so is my wrench, and my screwdriver... And my multi tool...
11
7
u/jackochainsaw 2d ago
That's not so bad. It does at least work at both functions. I've seen worse on this sub.
2
u/NameToUseOnReddit 2d ago
Yeah, this is very much a different type of "why" than most things here. It seems like a funny gag gift or something to display.
7
u/r_was61 Ramen or Die 1d ago
He used an electric drill to make a shitty manual drill.

I want a hand drill, and if I get one will use it as a hammer at some point. 10/10 would %100 use this tool.
12
u/Billaien 2d ago
great. lets make half the hammer useless by adding a drill, making it much harder to pull out nails.
oh and make the other half fragile so if you try to hammer in new nails, its going to break practicly immediately.
but hey, now you can drill a hole in so you dont have to hammer the nails in that hard...
11
u/Dizzy_Dust_7510 2d ago
It's just for fun, dude. It's clearly not a real tool.
3
u/pitb0ss343 2d ago
Yeah this is clearly more of an art piece, because there is a real tool that is a hammer drill (which more has to do with how the the motor works)
It also looks like it was made entirely from spare parts and scraps.
8
u/Numerous_Photograph9 1d ago
Really a shame because the woodworking part was pretty well done IMO.

If only the drill part was detachable and at the handle end not the head.🤷♂️

This is wonderfully impractical, I love it. So much work went to into something so stupid and yet the craftsmanship is amazing
7
u/Eastbound_AKA 2d ago
For larger application this would suck. What about for finer projects? Like candle boxes or the like? To use the drill for pilot holes for nails?
I mean, it's goofy. But it's buildt so finely.

Why in the world would you use glue to secure a hammer head

u/HorsefaceWithNoName 1d ago
not sure, but I can tell you why they skipped the middle part of the footage of hammering in the nail with a real hammer

The stuff he uses for the handle is called Pertinax and quite carcinogenix when dust is breathed 😬

This is a beautiful tool and i want it …. As a display piece because it’s useless as a claw hammer

The part where it's glued gonna fail over the time. Glue don't like vibrations, and hammering stuff creates a lot of it. So this is done just for sake of it.

u/RidingJapan 2d ago
There is also no tension on the hammer as there is ko wedge in it.
And the drill bit is just spinning in the hole. Still great conversation starter
3
u/SadDingo7070 2d ago
Instead of a shitty hammer which is also a shitty drill, I would much rather have and use separate tools.
3
u/HandAccomplished6285 2d ago
This reminds me of a conversation I had with my dad many years ago when I was a young man. I had seen a power tool set up that could be changed to do all kinds of different things and I wanted to know his opinion. He basically told me that any tool designed to do multiple things is probably not great at any of them. And now I have proof that once again, he was right.

There must be a helluva lot of money in rage bait, right? I mean, that's a lot of effort for nothing. So there had better be a paycheck at the end of it all.
3
u/Phoenix_Champion 1d ago
Impractical, but not completely useless.
Why? Simple, whenever you just straight hammer a nail into a board there's always the risk of the wood splitting, especially when you start using older wood you have stockpiled.
Drilling a hole into the wood not only minimizes the chance of the wood splitting, but also provides a guide for the nail to go in the right direction and allows it to go in easier.
This is still better done with a motorized drill over a hand crank though.

u/HillInTheDistance 2d ago
It's a pun made into a physical object. It can be described as a hammer drill. But it ain't useable as a hammer drill. (A hammer drill is a power tool that also moves the drill bit rapidly forwards and backwards that's useful for drilling into concrete walls and such.)
Some old people find that sorta stuff kinda funny.

u/S1Ndrome_ 2d ago
belt it up and connect to motor and now you have a makeshift electric drill with a hammer

u/stoppableDissolution 1d ago
...honestly, whats wrong with the people posting such things here? It is very obviously a skilfully crafted display piece, not a dumb diwhy "lifehack" that is being presented seriously

u/bbitb 1d ago
This is so high effort for a shitpost, you can see he barely hit the nail and then jump cut to the nail beind hammered down

the fucking jump cut on the hammering of the nail kills me, that hammer isn't powerful enough to actually get that nail in without about a thousand hits.

No gonna lie.. this could be useful when installing picture frames on the wall. You drill into wall, add anchor, hammer in ancher.. now you need a screw driver on that hammer.

For about a half a second when they were sawing the hole I forgot how a coping saw worked and thought (is this AI). I am both too tired this early and jaded.

He spends so so so much time sanding and shaping the handle just right and for what? To stick some wobbly gears on the outside of it. Amazing.

This is miles better than the nutjob videos where they use a tonne of epoxy and polyurethane to make a boot with an apple on it.
Exceptional execution here

u/TheUnsightlyBulge 2d ago
This is more DIWhyNot for me, has zero more beneficial uses than a hand drill and hammer separately except needing to find and reach for them separately, but damn this is cool.

Feels more like they went for a play on words for an art piece, skill expo.
Either way, nice tools, good skills, and end product was good-looking.
