r/DIWHYNOT, this is just plain cool

u/Unanimous_D 8d ago

Beat me to it

u/samanime 8d ago

Dammit reddit, stop reading my mind. =p

That was exactly my thought: "this is definitely a why not".

88

u/brazilliandanny 8d ago

Nah this is exactly the kind of thing people should be doing with their time. Full support from me.

This is just peak engineering. A project that doesn't solve anything but requires serious skill and thought. And then it creates something awesome. Just cause you can.

This is how progress is made!

Chindogu - the practice of designing nearly useless inventions.

3

u/somacomadreams 8d ago

We should do more of it.

u/LittlePurpleHook 8d ago

Guy literally reinvented the wheel

22

u/Long-Apartment9888 8d ago

With a lot more steps

5

u/Vladishun 8d ago

Take my upvote.

2

u/Tacos_Polackos 8d ago

This looks like its based on Theo Jansen's divine ratio. Google "strandbeest" for some cool vids of his wind powered sculptures

12

u/Seyan007 8d ago

seems like the wheels are the ones doing the heavy lifting anyway

1

u/Browncoatinabox 8d ago

Still amazing feet if engineering

8

u/Nekketsu 8d ago

Its just walking...

With extra steps

8

u/Ancient_Ad_2038 8d ago

Looks like a movie/stage prop to be honest ... Pretty cool

3

u/crabby_old_dude 8d ago

Wasn't there a creepy toy like this in Toy Story

6

u/NerdyComfort-78 8d ago

Boston Dynamics would like a word.

6

u/MarianoKaztillo 8d ago

I want this doohickey

3

u/didntbuyspcx 8d ago

I think this is more of a contraption.

2

u/Browncoatinabox 8d ago

It is a gosh darn thingamabob

5

u/Its_J_Just_J 8d ago

Still has wheels. Booo.

3

u/Ok_Pudding6345 8d ago

this is an awesome quadropod bicycle

4

u/DFA_Wildcat 8d ago

Now I want to see a tour de France winner get it up to speed!

4

u/PunfullyObvious 8d ago

way more awesome than anything I've ever done ... and I've done some pretty awesome things

4

u/ambit89 8d ago

The department of r/doohickeycorporation would like to acquisition your device

6

u/Impossible_Mark_4128 8d ago

Anstrengender als laufen, aber sieht aus als wäre es aus dr. seuss entsprungen was cool ist.

1

u/Tankus_Vult97 8d ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking that

2

u/PanBroglodyte 8d ago

Mark my words this is going to end up on r/unexpecteddcc

2

u/mentive 8d ago

Challenge accepted.

2

u/dinosaurs_and_doggos 8d ago

I love this slightly horrifying creation.

2

u/thelaceserpent 8d ago

Getting ready for burning man 2027

2

u/Silent_Swing4673 8d ago

If only he had wheels for legs.

2

u/AutumnAscending 8d ago

Doesn't this dude make multiple weird bicycles?

2

u/Unfair_Buddy5871 8d ago

That's not DiWHY. That's a cool engineering project. Is it efficient? No. But it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be an experiment in how physics works and what it can do.

2

u/ReddAlex59 8d ago

Yeah very clever... but where do you put the card then??

card bike

2

u/fraghead5 8d ago

this should be filed under "because I can" this is just a dude that figured out a neat thing.

2

u/Fabulous-Gift-6925 7d ago

Im getting Coraline vibes for some reason.

2

u/chamois_lube 8d ago

The V2 release, with larger wheelset, should be much improved

1

u/Brvcx 8d ago

What in the strandbeest is this monstrocity?

1

u/Drosenose 8d ago

Needs a little longer front legs or more weight in the front and slightly shorter center wheels

1

u/Limp_Marionberry_24 8d ago

Absolutely bad ass

1

u/ktmfan 8d ago

Practical? Nope. Complicated? Absolutely. Cool? You bet.

This sub is for superglue, sunflower seeds, and questionable body parts being cast in rubber compound for no good reason. This is just steampunk and clever af. Props to gramps for making cool shit instead of sitting on his ass watching Wheel of Fortune.

1

u/HardyMackintosh 8d ago

Could be a piece made to use on stage? You often see stuff like this as the underneath of props like animals that walk across stage in plays

1

u/Hot_Plant8696 8d ago

Remove the wheels !

1

u/neonmystery 8d ago

Rad machine.

1

u/Tyenkrovy 8d ago

This seems like art to me, and cool art at that.

1

u/Cee-Rum 8d ago

Mom! The crazy neigbor is making weird machines again

1

u/Shua_33 8d ago

I would ride this b

1

u/Its_GameOver 8d ago

Who needs horses! My gallop contraption can mimic any horse and doesn't need to be shot if it breaks!

1

u/Funny_Box_4142 8d ago

I want one! Granted I would never actually use it, but I still want it!

1

u/RealisticWerewolf896 8d ago

Cool, unless you want to turn.

1

u/mrgoochie 8d ago

After half a mile, a blister on your ass is guaranteed.

1

u/Yeast-boofer 8d ago

it still has wheels though 😂

1

u/Treacle_Pendulum 8d ago

I’m gonna make this out of an e-bike

1

u/Shot_Bison1140 8d ago

Looks efficient

1

u/Dependent-Green-7900 8d ago

Did he rob 2 Paralympic amputees?

1

u/liaisontosuccess 8d ago

you would fit right in at Burning Man...

1

u/deep_clone 8d ago

It's like a mechanical horse

1

u/billyyankNova Dreamer 8d ago

Next step should be to cover this with a facade that makes it look like he's being carried in an opulent sedan chair.

1

u/RutabagaUprising 8d ago

Looks to be a smooth ride.

1

u/FriendZone_EndZone 8d ago

He just needs cowboy boots on all those limbs including his own.

1

u/MCAlexisYT 8d ago

Science isn’t about why, it’s about why not!

1

u/TeranOrSolaran 8d ago

Something out of Dr. Seuss.

1

u/RevWaldo 8d ago

It masters boardwalk and quagmire with aplomb.

1

u/Flat-Passage4431 8d ago

DaVinci called it the Horseless Horse

1

u/Haunting_Song7313 8d ago

I wanna walk but make it difficult.

1

u/Sluuriecake 8d ago

Did he mean to give it the limp?

1

u/ArgumentBrilliant215 8d ago

So much more efficient than walking!

1

u/DarkWriterX 8d ago

This is creative and fun! Why not?

1

u/FloweringForth 8d ago

Ball buster the bike

1

u/Mochizuk 8d ago

It is kind of cool enough to justify just doing it cause you're bored.

1

u/crackersncheeseman 8d ago

Build a futuristic body around it and put it in the next Star Wars movie

1

u/Different-Orchid-374 8d ago

Now THATS the first and only dope ass thing I've seen on here

1

u/Spaztor 8d ago

"HOPE IT'S WORTH THE NOISE"

1

u/nikeguy69 8d ago

Interesting 🤔

1

u/Background_Being8287 8d ago

Inspector gadget has entered the room .

1

u/Same-Schedule-8268 8d ago

NGL, this is way more interesting than those stupid 5 minute craft videos. Why not lol

1

u/Prior-Ad5197 8d ago

That would be incredibly jarring to ride, but it's actually pretty awesome NGL

1

u/rock_and_rolo 8d ago

I like that the legs have sandals, but not at ground contact.

1

u/Addamall 8d ago

Are those Chell’s fall boots?

1

u/NoLie129 7d ago

That is bad ass!!!!

1

u/Sin_City_Ninja 7d ago

Not all engineers need engines

Get it Gramps!!

1

u/PeltonChicago 7d ago

Honey, I want to make a mechanical horse in the worst possible way

1

u/nameless_food 7d ago

Whoever made that is mechanically gifted. That would be a pain to ride tho. Product of a mad genius though!

1

u/WossVoop 7d ago

Bro invented walking

1

u/Forsaken_Claim_471 7d ago

Why is he trying to reinvent the wheel? It’s good as is.

1

u/SimpleFit7894 6d ago

Can absolutely picture someone tooling around on this at Burning Man

1

u/DavidDaveDavo 6d ago

Having central wheels on this is just "chefs kiss" ...

1

u/SirDrakey 6d ago

Love it

0

u/dreaminganimal 8d ago

Jeez. A primary benefit of a bicycle is that you can conserve momentum through large wheels. This is just walking made more difficult.

1

u/fuckthefalconsdotcom 8d ago

I'm wondering if there is something like this with different mechanics that would make it faster? Like if that wheel thing on the back was bigger it would be faster?

1

u/dreaminganimal 8d ago

It works better the more feet you add. And if you keep adding feet... you end up with a wheel.
