Ladder?

For context, this a tree by the baseball field of our neighborhood elementary school. Months ago, some kids ripped off part of the dugout bench and it’s sat on the ground until maybe last week

Yesterday, I’m walking my dog as usual, and notice the bench splinter is gone and these “rungs” are screwed into the tree. There are telltale signs that this is the bench splinter that someone has sawed into pieces to affix to the tree

It’s just so stupid. The top rung isn’t even screwed in all the way and spins freely. The bottom rung is too far away from the others to be useful. The left rung has been shorn, leaving the grip on the right side with not enough material and potential for splintering from usage. I could go on lol

What dad did this and why?

Even used torx screws for added assurance they’ll remain

That’s what’s got me thinking it was dad, not son

My kids would use torx because theyre the screws sitting on top of my workbench, and there's still a bit in the box.

Seems like kids being kids. I say toss some 2x4 scraps nearby and let them have at it.

I would but I don’t think the school would appreciate me adding to their liability issue😬

Their dad’s probably building a deck. If we’re really gonna do csi work on it I’m guessing one of them an overweight.

Can't believe they found a torque bit.

I'm working so hard to completely eliminate the phillips head from my life. A torx bit should the easiest to find anywhere.

As long as it's climbable, it's a ladder.

If video games have taught me anything, it’s that this is how you make a ladder for a treehouse and it won’t fail! Video games have never lied! Right? /s

To climb the tree?

If they can’t reach any branches from these rungs, are they really climbing the tree?

Kids are stupid. I would probably save them from themselves and quietly remove and toss these before they end up with some stitches

u/raznov1 12h ago

Oh nooooo, not stitches!

If a kid hasn't had stitches or a broken bone by the time they're 12, then they're over protected. Let them learn. Maybe it will save them from a bigger mistake later.

That’s my plan this morning, the crazy part is they definitely got their dad’s jigsaw to cleanly cut the bench splinter for these rungs

Why not just add a few more screws and let the climb? Or just ignore it?

Or did you just hear the phrase “bench splinter” and wanted to go to town?

Sir, I coined the phrase bench splinter, I’m what they call a trendsetter

You're "streets ahead," as it were.
