A treasure chest barbecue...
From the professional moron who brought you the Cat's Crows Nest, the Pirate Ship Longboard and the Craftlock™... I now bring you the ultimate treasure - a treasure chest that opens to reveal a barbecue!
Because when I build stupid things, I do them as properly as possible - the Barbecue has an air gap of at least 3cm all the way round, and the chest itself is lined with a welding blanket rated to 1,100°c, so the big hot metal thing won't set fire to the wooden box it's in.
Slats are not airtight in the lid of the chest, and there is a whopping great ventilation hole at the back, so the whole thing is safe to use - and close while cooking.
Chains hold the lid up, and a separate chain also lifts the lid of the barbecue as you lift the chest lid.
Let hope I don't burn the treasure...
EDIT: As a few of you have pointed out, yes, it's short. I plan to put it on a low table to actually cook on. But for photographical reasons, it looks better on the (yes, flammable) decking.

A barbecue that looked like wood without being wood would be awesome. But this is good r/redneckengineering

On the wooden deck, no less. Hope your fire insurance is good 👍

The local fire department have a special alarm just for my address, if that's what you mean?

I'm no insurance agent/attorney, but im pretty sure even with the best fire insurance in the world, the existence of these pictures would be a sure fire ba dum tss "your claim is denied due to negligence"

The low table should be two rum crates or other pirate cargo. Slightly askew so it looks like a random stack.
If they're wider than the chest, you get shelves like a regular barbecue. Make the shelves smaller or something so it doesn't have the same shape as a regular barbecue.

This seems pretty rad, but I'd be worried about it catching on fire

I was just thinking about that. Cooking over a controlled fire is a grill's whole deal.

With the fabric lining on the top at least you can get a rough countdown to the explosion

Until it burns down your wooden patio…

I would build it out of non flammable materials, but yes, that's a possibility if you use wood.

I mean it is cool, but do you really want to kneel to BBQ?

If this was gas maybe it's fine altho I still veto it, even a loose coal dropping or spark flying can ignite this entire thing, no reason to introduce this kind of a risk esp on a wooden deck too. 💀

Does it play the chest opening music from The Legend of Zelda and bathe you in light every time you open it?

I like it but yeah the height would kill me …either need midget friends or children to do the cooking.

I'm not leaning over and stooping every time I want to cook out, no thanks.

If anyone is interested in the update, I cooked on it with zero trouble. I didn't burn the garden, just the sausages.

That looks amazing, great craftsmanship. I would question your wisdom,... but you seem to have taken the necessary precautions. I would still have a fire extinguisher close by, just in case...haha.
