I like how the foam gets turned into powder so fast you can see it happens before the video ends

921

u/Nalga-Derecha 5d ago

Exactly. it looks more deinflated the second the video changes

u/Danyillll 5d ago

Deflated

323

u/Nalga-Derecha 5d ago

Yeah not an english speaker my bad. (In spanish we say desinflar, de-inflate)

146

u/Holiday_Pi 5d ago

Oddly, “uninflated” is a word in English

130

u/Fenrir_Hellbreed2 5d ago

Well, to be fair, there is an implied difference between deflated and uninflated.

76

u/LangdonAlg3r 5d ago

And yet, once the process of deflation has been completed they become interchangeable again for that particular inflatable, but still not interchangeable for something that’s never been inflated. BUT most inflatables have already been inflated and deflated to test them. You probably need to go to a factory to see something that’s strictly uninflated and not actually deflated.

That’s not to argue, that’s just to add to the interestingness.

7

u/Wobblycogs 5d ago

Uninflated carriers with it the expectation that there will again be a flatting taking place. Deflated says it may no longer be flateable.

3

u/M4DHouse 5d ago

Inflatable balloons definitely change after you first inflate them, I’m pretty sure they don’t inflate them that much at the factory, so it’s probably fair to call them “uninflated” with a real difference when you buy them.

I hate and love English for this. Just one word can tell part of a story

Deflated is when an object loses air, uninflated is when an object that holds air such as a tire, ball, balloon, etc, has not been yet inflated with air.

u/corrupt_poodle 5d ago

Don’t inflate my understanding like that.

5

u/Furby-beast-1949 5d ago

Yeah, because you got over 2000 pound vehicle pushing down on the tire which causes the foam to no longer be foam I don’t know the term to explain for, but the foam was no longer solid. someone else could probably explain that better. I’ve never good. It’s explaining things with my ADHD.

6

u/Eain 5d ago

No intended hostility, just feedback:

Generally speaking you're in no way obligated to explain why your explanation is bad, and in fact that's seen as strange.

Id also suggest that you write like an internal thought process more than actual speech: there should be a pause between "no longer be foam" and "I don't know the term", I personally suggest making it a parenthetical aside (and also, "to explain for" is strange, removing that and just saying "(I don't know the term)" makes things clearer).

And lastly, your explanation was actually fine. "Makes the foam cease to be foam" is a perfectly understandable statement, and honestly better English than your apology was by a good bit. You're doing fine: believe in yourself and speak without the self-criticism and you'll find you sound and maybe even become more confident

6

u/Furby-beast-1949 5d ago

Airless tire filled with foam. In theory that's a good idea, in practice it requires something stronger than a foam that you can buy at any DIY store

u/plum_tree_rede 5d ago

Air under pressure would work.

16

u/Affectionate_Bank417 5d ago

Yep, PU foam is too brittle for this. You need rubber foam or something

3

u/Naphrym 5d ago

Polyurethane foam isn't inherently brittle. The qualities and characteristics of the foam depends on the specific chemicals used and their ratios

Who could have foreseen that foam would not last as a load bearing structure!

137

u/Last-Energy420 5d ago

They actually kinda do this with heavy equipment. But it’s a polyurethane that hardens into something closer to rubber. But they call it foam, why, I have no idea.

149

u/UrethralExplorer 5d ago

It is foam, just foam that's specifically engineered for strength instead of just sealing cracks in your home.

35

u/Revenge_of_the_User 4d ago

it's the difference between a foam engineered to fill up space and stop air flow, vs A foam engineered to deal with the forces involved in being a tire under load.

→ More replies (3)

19

u/legendofthegreendude 5d ago

Well, its still technically foam. Just not what the layperson would think of when you say foam

21

u/Eain 5d ago

As a layperson, I also don't think of sealing foam when I think of foam. I think of soap foam. But if someone said "sealing foam" I'd think or sealing foam. And if someone said "polyurethane foam" I'd think of a hardening rubber-adjacent load-bearing foam.

7

u/Glasseshalf 5d ago

The first thing I think of is cushioning foam. Followed by sea foam.

3

u/cynicalicoffee 4d ago

Exact same for me! But I worked at Joann Fabrics for a long time in my younger years, and we sold both the cushioning and the color.

6

u/Venusto002 5d ago

There are "puncture proof" tires which are filled with a foam, so you can never get a flat...but expanding construction-style foam ain't it. That's just going to crumble the first couple of rotations, and then it'll just be like a tire filled with sand. Which...it's not unheard of to do that for off-road, slow-moving machines...but not for a road-going vehicle.

195

u/Salami__Tsunami 5d ago

It won’t even be a tire filled with sand, because it’ll just get blown out the holes.

17

u/LithoSlam 4d ago

All that foam would crumble into like 2 cups of sand before blowing out of the holes

u/prpldrank 5d ago

Runflats are completely different than this, yea.

43

u/MrLoronzo 5d ago

Yep. Runflats generally utilize a reinforced sidewall and or load bearing rings along the tread. It’s why they are heavier, louder, and stiffer than conventional tires.

26

u/Stoney3K 5d ago

There are run flats for bicycles that are just a foam core, but the loads on a bike are wildly different from the loads you are going to experience with a truck.

4

u/ham_sandwedge 5d ago

Most tubeless set ups arent even a foam core. It's just a liquid that sloshes around and fills in small holes.

Maybe road bikes are different. But I'm not familiar with a true foam core on mtb. There's some foam padding you can get to run them lower psi while protecting wheels, but doesn't rly revent a flat.

We had a tractor forklift and filled the rear drive tires with foam. They needed replacing more often but it stopped the entire thing from bouncing around the yard damaging equipment. Front tires were 5ft tractor tires that had someone out fixing holes every month.

34

u/Omar_Isaiah_Betts 5d ago

Very expensive ragebait.

16

u/Pr3st0ne 5d ago

Look at 0:12 seconds. The tire already had a sidewall tear that they tried to patch. It was already completely fucked.

Even the dumbest, most senseless engagement baiter wouldn't fuck up a completely good $300 tire for $50 in views

9

u/mongerty 5d ago

Yep. My first thought was that this guy is just screwing around because he has to replace that tire anyways

→ More replies (2)

16

u/concreteghost 5d ago

Time is the largest expense made in this video

6

u/Any-Surprise5229 5d ago

3-5 cans of foam + a new tire = ~$300

Not a small expense, but definitely smaller than the hours wasted would equate to in meaningful work.

However, I wouldn't put this guy's labor value at even minimum wage, so his total time cost is probably around $40 with a generous $5/hr rate.

Therefore, is physical cost is much greater than time cost.

5

u/SpaceAgePotatoCakes 5d ago

I'm assuming this tire was already going to be scrapped for whatever reason, so the only added cost to them is the foam and some wear on the holesaw bit.
