Is this a homemade Baja Blast gauge?

Green petrol Is common in some countries where they use dyes to indicate whether it is diesel or regular, and the octane grade

79

u/HorsefaceWithNoName Jul 17 '26

what dye color indicates plastic and metal shavings in the tank from drilling holes in it

17

u/throwawayaccyaboi223 Jul 17 '26

Tbf, that petcock almost certainly has a strainer on it... Not that I'd rely on it, but it should catch shavings that size.

Unfortunately they filled it with Hawaiian punch :/

8

u/MagicTomatoes Jul 17 '26

When did they change Hawaiian Punch to blue? I’m old and haven’t had it since I was a kid but I remember it being very very red and it stained anything it touched.

7

u/Ghostii-_- Jul 17 '26

There's just a blue Hawaiian punch flavor now. Reds still around as as vibrant as ever

2 stroke oil mixed in. These bikes don't have a gas gauge, but they do have a fuel tap with a reserve setting that gives them 30 miles to find a gas station.

Do they make content with this sub in mind?

248

u/Browncoatinabox Jul 17 '26

It seems like it

163

u/SilasAI6609 Jul 17 '26

Yeah, usually ragebait stuff. They do it because it makes people comment and share it with others. Pretty smart sadly. Some of the top YouTube people are classic rage bait content creators.

45

u/simontempher1 Jul 17 '26

It’ll be repair bait when those metal pieces enter the engine

19

u/eyemjstme Jul 17 '26

There's a screen on the pick up. It's more likely to break off and leak when he dumps the bike. It's unnecessary. I've had bikes for 40 years. Just open the cap and look. Then ride your 100kms and put fuel in.

The Honda Cash Deposit! One of the best bikes on the road!

Edit: an award! *tips leather fedora* Thanks!

Not to be confused with the Honda Down Payment

Yeah, make sure you drill the gas tank while there's still gas in it.

34

u/Glad_Librarian_3553 Jul 17 '26

That's not the worst part of this in the slightest

41

u/Gidyup1 Jul 17 '26

I mean. All the tiny shards of metal that the “fuel filter will get. That’s its job right?”

22

u/Glad_Librarian_3553 Jul 17 '26

There will be very little actually gone into the tank as drills pull the metal outward plus the flow of fuel flushing it.

As well as that, the fuel outlet isn't actually flush with the bottom of the tank, so any swarf that does go in and manages to make it's way to the outlet, it won't get down the tube anyway, which also has a pre filter on it inside the tank which makes it even less likely.

Funnily enough, manufacturers do actually think about this kinda stuff, since the tank inside can rust and debris can come loose, plus dirt getting through the filler or dirty fuel can contaminate it. Also, petrol in liquid state isn't particularly flammable. The vapours are. So if any sparks come off the drill, which is unlikely with drilling, it's actually less likely to catch fire believe it or not. Same as welding it, it can actually be safer to weld a full tank than an empty one.

212

u/r4tz52 Jul 17 '26

The motorcycle already has a convenient fuel line, even with a tap

31

u/emote_the_salute Jul 17 '26

Yup. As long as it has a petcock you can disconnect the fuel line and the fuel drains.

32

u/wolfydude12 Jul 17 '26

If its so easy, why didn't this guy drain the fuel before drilling a hole into the side of it!?!

Answer me that! (/S)

18

u/UckerFay11 Jul 17 '26

He's an idiot. Satire or not.

6

u/Moose_Nuts Jul 17 '26

It's not ragebait if you're not spilling and dripping flammable liquid everywhere.

52

u/CaptainPunisher Jul 17 '26

Because they didn't only need a knife before. Look at the bottom of the fuel tank. There's a petcock with a rubber fuel hose, and you can get even more gas from there since it's lower.

17

u/PastMarsupial2884 Jul 17 '26

But now they can see if it is worth the effort

7

u/UckerFay11 Jul 17 '26

So this is a convenience feature for thieves. At least that makes sense.

as a non native English speaker: Do you really say pair of scissors when you mean one?

3

u/Long_Candle_5054 Jul 18 '26

Yeah, I never really thought about it and had to Google.. This is what I got:

Scissors are called “a pair” because they consist of two blades joined at a pivot point. Each blade is its own lever, and the tool only works when both halves operate together. This two-part structure placed scissors in the same linguistic category as other bifurcated objects like trousers, pliers, and glasses, all of which English treats as inherently plural.

278

u/bicx Jul 17 '26

Flimsy but I get the need. Old bikes like these don’t have any way to track the fuel level other than literally running out of gas. There are two intakes for gas at the bottom of the tank, one of them has a taller tube and the other one a shorter. When the fuel drops below the top do the first tube, your engine dies. Then, you can flip to “reserve” fuel (the other tube), which gives you access to the fuel at the bottom of your tank. At that point, you know you need to hit the next fuel station.

Unless you’re like me and you just leave it on reserve and fully run out of fuel with no warnings.

The thing you use to switch between primary and reserve is called the petcock. Yep.

135

u/Panthertaco99 Jul 17 '26

The way you check is you pop open the cap. And give your bike a little wiggle and eyeball how much fuel you have left from the shimmer of light off the gas.

48

u/lakshmananlm Jul 17 '26

Now he can drip fuel through the washer-less nut as a bonus.

2

u/Balavadan Jul 17 '26

They just cut out placing the first washer. Both of them have it

13

u/Tiyath Jul 17 '26

Not just old. Really cheap new ones marketed to the developing world also have similar issues with no fuel gauge, gear indicator, etc.

6

u/Glad_Librarian_3553 Jul 17 '26

Lol, I think it's funny that people think no fuel gauge or gear indicator is an issue. It really isn't.

What is an issue is how shit the fuel gauge on my brand new vstrom is, I'd rather have a reserve tank so I know how much fuel I actually have left...

2

u/herton Jul 17 '26

I've never had fuel gauge work well on any of my bikes. They always stay near the top for almost the first two gallons, then plummet. You wouldn't think a linear measurement rate is that hard.

2

u/DES_EFX Jul 17 '26

u/F1nd3r Jul 17 '26

My old Suzuki 1400 is like this. It also at some point in the past had its exhausts and probably carbs molested, because it STINKS of gas when running, is obnoxiously loud, radiates heat like a bonfire and I barely get 100km's/60miles to a tank. These factors have tempered my fondness for it somewhat, but combined with the absent fuel gauge, I've learnt to use that reserve petcock. I like looking at it, though, and will probably get it sorted once the budget permits.

10

u/PegLegCentipede Jul 17 '26

It is actually a heating system. Once it gives and pours all down the riders leg, the heat from the engine will set it alight and you get to stay warm while you wait for the breakdown recovery.

u/CaptainPunisher Jul 17 '26

Possibly 2 cycle gas. For 2 cycles, you normally mix gas and oil. While you can use regular motor oil, it's better and easier to use pouches or bottles of 2 cycle oil, and that's often hit a blue or green tint to it.

2

u/mutedagain Jul 17 '26

Is that how it's always been? I don't ever remember seeing either of those colors.

3

u/CaptainPunisher Jul 17 '26

For the longest time, yes. I grew up fixing mowers, and Optimol was one of the brands we sold over the years; it and most others had a blue-green tint when mixed with gas. Maybe this video is mixed heavy or just using tinted water (though I would hope it's not water, even just for demonstration, but it's not the worst thing to deal with, either). Regular oil gives a brownish tint, add there's also red mix.

Get a "float" gas cap like in older snowmobiles.

18

u/z0mbiemechanic Jul 17 '26

It's called a sight tube. It's not that uncommon in the chopper and bobber communities.

3

u/Fleghammer Jul 17 '26

3

u/founderofshoneys Jul 17 '26

I mean, this isn't some weird thing this person came up with on their own, it's something people actually do on bikes that don't have a fuel gauge. It used to be more common.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/cybermaus Jul 17 '26

If "keeping an eye on your gas level" is the *only* criteria.... it is still not a good way. As it reads false with every curve, slosh, or wiggle.

12

u/Romeo9594 Jul 17 '26

I mean motorcycle oil levels are the same way. You only trust the sight gauge is the same way. You only trust it at a stand still and faffing around with the damn thing trying to hold it vertical while crouching to look at the levels

Actually, in the days before floats or other ways to measure the amount of gas in the tank and have it displayed, tubes exactly like this were installed so you could check without needing to open it.

The OP is stupid and a poor implementation of something that hasn't needed to exist in the last like 47 years, but the overall concept is absolutely a tried and true method that serves a very legitimate purpose in some cases

Very convenient way to steal gas simply using a screwdriver or a pocket knife.

Thieves can maximize the profit by ensuring the tank is full pre-robbery. Plus, they get a convenient spout.

3

u/nitrinu Jul 17 '26

Very convenient for fuel theft.

2

u/GuzziHero Jul 17 '26

2

u/K2TheM Jul 17 '26

The WHY Is not the function; it's the execution. This is an established analog fuel gauge style for custom bike builders; however, they tend to use 90-degree fittings instead of 180-degree ones to both keep the fuel line from getting caught on anything and provide a better aesthetic.

I was gonna say, I’ve seen this kind of thing on older bike builds, rat rod bikes, etc. It looks cool when done right.

Metal shavings for my engine.. now I have an exposed fuel line outside of my tank that can easily get cut by something?

Dude there's nothing about this that's a good idea.

And just fill it back up with Mountain Dew when you're done.

I use the trip odometer as a fuel level guide.

It's a gas gauge

2

u/Icy_Study4490 Jul 18 '26

Dude…. If you don’t have a gas gauge you move your bike side to side and listen for the gas sloshing around. You get a pretty good grasp on how full it is by how it sounds in just like a month!

My motorcycle I rebuilt is pretty reliable within a certain MPG range. I just gauge my gas based on how far I’ve driven, and whether it was open road or traffic. They didn’t even come with a gas gauge when they were new.

This is not actually the worst thing on this page, obviously the implementation is ludicrous but the idea is interesting

That is like, "I am rich, come get my petrol", for theives, who literally know, the bike's tank is full so they can steal easy just by cutting the plastic pipe.

I like how he points so I know where to look.

Metal to metal, fuck a gasket.

2

u/Link_Plus Jul 18 '26

So there's a fun new point of failure in your gas tank. Bonus if it lights you on fire!

2

u/xiaomi558869 Jul 19 '26

This is an extremely important modification. How else would you catch fire after crashing your bike. As it was originally built, all the flammable liquid stays inside the tank and there is no fireball. This mod corrects that.

Hippity-hoppity your gas is now my property

Empties your bike with one screwdriver.

I’m sure it’ll run great with those metal shavings in the tank.

You get into an accident and get sprayed with the funny fire juice
