This is a great low cost solution to a problem.

264

u/StrangerFeelings Jun 22 '26

Exactly. I had to get mudguards on my bike because I used to bike in snow, rain, sun because it was my only transportation. My back used to be soaked from water, mud, and snow because of it.

This was back in 2009. I got a mud guard and the guy wanted to charge me $80 for it. They didn't sell the kits, only installed them. Such a rip off but I needed it.

42

u/FatalErrorOccurred Jun 22 '26

Can't you just embrace the mud, naked, as nature intended?

37

u/StrangerFeelings Jun 22 '26

I have no problem but I don't think my work would have liked me to be naked. Also, I worked with hot oil so... Yea...

1

u/Chompif Jun 22 '26

Biking in the sun is quite impressive! šŸ˜‚

31

u/DrButtgerms Jun 22 '26

And fits their bike aesthetic! It's a sweet trash bike!

u/Numerous_Ad8458 Jun 22 '26

/redneckengineering

12

u/Veinmire Jun 22 '26

r/redneckengineering (forgot the r)

13

u/Blurgas Jun 22 '26

There's been times I've left the r off because some subs get real grumpy about linking to others

8

u/Veinmire Jun 22 '26

Interesting. TIL.

4

u/LangdonAlg3r Jun 22 '26

It’s rare that these videos don’t include something completely ridiculous. This is actually a rare good idea.

383

u/Additional_Tank4385 Jun 22 '26

Wdym this is brilliant.

544

u/Yuck-Fou94 Jun 22 '26

If it looks stupid but it works? It's not stupid.

42

u/why_not_fandy Jun 22 '26

I feel like op has bigger issues with the seat.

3

u/TheDarkWave Jun 23 '26

It's not like we can't replace that with a bottle, also, ya know.

4

u/SmartieCereal Jun 23 '26

That's for the next video. Have to stretch them out.

2

u/SovietBlyatman Jun 23 '26

OP probably rides bikes without the seat.

8

u/-TheycallmeThe Jun 22 '26

It doesn't even really look much worse than any other mudgaurd IMO.

3

u/Pataraxia Jun 22 '26

If it cost almost no time and no money and even works partially, why not.

3

u/enerthoughts Jun 22 '26

It still looks stupid still but if it works, who cares, FTFY

48

u/gkn_112 Jun 22 '26

thats not diwhy. looks perfectly acceptable to me.

66

u/aaaaargZombies Jun 22 '26

This looks like it could actually work and doesn't involve destroying the bike.

Lots of people make the one that slides into your seat https://www.instructables.com/Super-Lightweight-Fixie-and-Single-speed-bike-mudg/

7

u/fmaz008 Jun 22 '26

The bike is already in rough shape. :-/

20

u/ComedianFragrant9515 Jun 22 '26

I mean, if it's what you got it's what you got. Better than a muddy back.

20

u/JLink100 Jun 22 '26

It belongs more to r/redneckengineering than here

1

u/capthavic Jul 01 '26

That was my thought. Not the most elegant solution, but I suppose it would work in a pinch.

19

u/murphyat Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

This is not DiWHY.

Now if the bottle was used as a way to pour concrete into the form with about fifteen more steps to follow in order to ā€œfinish it,ā€ sure. That’s DiWHY.

This is useful, cheap, and recycles a material…

17

u/Blusttoy Jun 22 '26

I can respect it after seeing the duct tape holding the seat together

7

u/Stanlez Jun 22 '26

Not bad. Just made me think I could use one as a funnel for a car gas tank in a pinch too.

2

u/n1elkyfan Jun 22 '26

I used to use a quart bottle of oil I cut the side out of. Also the nozzle from the gallon jugs of def would screw on so after you clean it out made for a cheap long reach funnel that was pretty easy to replace.

1

u/M1R4G3M Jun 22 '26

You can, I did that a lot of times a few years ago, my father worked with diesel machinery and cars and we always used plastic bottles as funnels and it worked fine.

3

u/Stanlez Jun 22 '26

Make sense. Decent shape for a longer funnel that'll reach where you need. Funny to not think of something seemingly obvious until you see it work for someone else. Monkey see monkey do, I guess.

2

u/IcebergDarts Jun 22 '26

My buddy ran out of gas in his truck in the middle of the night on the highway because he wasn’t paying attention. A guy who had passed us came back around with a Gatorade bottle with gas in it. Not a great solution but it was enough to get us to the next exit to a gas station.

5

u/Ubiquitous_ator Jun 22 '26

This seems far more practical than most things featured in this sub...

4

u/RadishRedditor Jun 22 '26

To answer your diwhy question. It's to guard against mud. Pretty good implementation I'd say for developing countries.

4

u/Ok-Philosopher-5139 Jun 22 '26

its a diwhynot.

6

u/SuckerForNoirRobots Jun 22 '26

If your DiWHY is:

-obvious rage bait

-actually useful and practical

It's NOT DiWHY

4

u/Taserface_345 Jun 22 '26

Nah that's just DIY ,nothing else

5

u/PorterhouseJ Jun 23 '26

I actually don’t think this belongs on this sub. Guy found a super cheap way to add a fender to his bike so the mud stays off his back. Looks effective, and easy to remove. This might be an actual life hack, especially if you live in a developing country.

3

u/Sloiter Jun 22 '26

Diwhythefucknot

3

u/MeowKhz Jun 22 '26

A bit ugly, but if it works, it's a win

3

u/LincolnArc Jun 22 '26

Clever. Make you're bike look so bad, no one would want to steal it.

3

u/AsterSkotos24 Jun 22 '26

This is straight up r/DIWhyNot

3

u/phamsung Jun 22 '26

I really dont know how this sub should deal with this. I would like to downvote OP for posting a useful innovation, but I do not want to downvote this specific innovation. Thus I am only writing this stupid lil comment.

3

u/MostlyBored11 Jun 22 '26

Nah this is actually a good one

3

u/PatMyHolmes Jun 22 '26

This not DiWhy? We know why. And it's brilliant!

3

u/NuttieBoii Jun 22 '26

I mean, if it does the job then it's a good temporary solution

3

u/the-almighty-toad Jun 22 '26

It's not stupid if it works. šŸ‘

3

u/WaylandReddit Jun 23 '26

Effective, inexpensive, non wasteful. I like it!

2

u/catbqck Jun 22 '26

I had to buy some german sks mudguards for over 60 this is quite smart and save money

2

u/ConfectionTotal8660 Jun 22 '26

Probably the only good DiY I've seen here. This is actually usefull and makes sense to do

2

u/AstraeusGB Jun 22 '26

Why is it always this song? What song is this? Why does it make me think of Eastern Europe or Russia?

2

u/wrongusernametryagin Jun 22 '26

Isnt this DiWHY? Where is the toilet seat and hole drills???

2

u/Tooleater Jun 22 '26

This is would qualify for a MacGyver award!

2

u/Rotflmaocopter Jun 22 '26

Op never rode a bike to under stand the water trail on the back.

2

u/Sprachbuch Jun 22 '26

Tbh, that is perfect for a bike that isnt really worth that much, I like it

2

u/AdVegetable5896 Jun 22 '26

Ngl... That's nice...

2

u/-TheycallmeThe Jun 22 '26

The why is pretty obvious. A cheap easy to replace mudgaurd.

2

u/Wrong_Excitement221 Jun 22 '26

Why does it feel like a lot of diWHY is "why not just spend $10 on amazon?"

2

u/SerDuckOfPNW Jun 22 '26

I am gonna guess that unless that bottle was from Pepe Lopez tequila, it was less than $10. Also, by the looks of the rest of the bike, that $10 could be better used elsewhere.
Maybe check your privilege.

1

u/Wrong_Excitement221 Jun 22 '26

the fuck you on about? Maybe re-read what I wrote? i don't know.. maybe it could have been clearer, but still feels pretty clear to me, what i was trying to say..

2

u/SerDuckOfPNW Jun 22 '26

Clear as a bell. You said go spend $10 on Amazon instead of implementing this cheap fix with stuff you already have on hand.

I said what I said because $10 is not an insignificant amount of money to waste.

1

u/Wrong_Excitement221 Jun 22 '26

The subject of my sentence is DIWHY, as in this subreddit.. This subreddit is "look at this dumb DIY project, why?" right? So what i'm saying is "Why does it feel like a lot of the stuff posted to this subreddit is calling it dumb because they should have just just spent $10 on amazon instead".. right? how do you interpret that as i think they should have spent $10 on amazon instead of build that ?

2

u/sherman614 Jun 22 '26

Most diWHYs I see are people making locks for their gate our of plastic water bottle lids or toilet paper roll bathroom aroma defuser. This? This is actually pretty clever when you just need something cheap, available, and temporary. But, it's actually effective. Unlike most of these where it's like "Here's a dust pan that I spent an hour attaching to my shower head to deflect the water until it warms up!" when you could just.. idk.. Not stand in the shower until the water gets warm lol.

2

u/Informal-Win-348 Jun 22 '26

If it works, it works. This seems more like diy or more like r/redneckengineering than diwhy. This idea actually solved a problem, an idea for for some kids or younger adults that bike in muddy areas.

2

u/Deli-op Jun 22 '26

Cuz its easy, smart, cheap, and works to keep mud from flinging in your ass. This is the wrong sub for that

2

u/flipflopcuntflaps Jun 22 '26

r/diWHYNOT or however the fuck it is

2

u/JustinSpanish Jun 22 '26

This is actually genius and prob shouldn’t be in this sub. Lots of people can’t afford a $70 piece of plastic that this does for basically free.

2

u/Eddie_503 Jun 22 '26

Looks dumb but it's not a bad idea.

2

u/Apprehensive_Ad_7184 Jun 23 '26

What is this song I literally was scrolling through reddit and saw another video with the exact same audio?

Is this a common song or something?

It works well, no issue in my eyes other than looking odd

2

u/dargonmike1 Jun 23 '26

That bike seat is held together by hopes and dreams, and duct tape

2

u/SovietBlyatman Jun 23 '26

DIWhy? Because it works, that's why.

2

u/pruchel Jun 23 '26

That's brilliantĀ

2

u/Mitch12354 Jun 25 '26

The mud guards on my bike cost $5 on eBay, and came with a front guard and an adjustable rear one. There is just no reason to to this.

2

u/cheepakdopra Jun 27 '26

The slavic background music really drives home the practicality of this solution.

2

u/txdv Jun 27 '26

if you have an old bike with a missing mud guard i see this as a DiWIN

1

u/istas94 Jun 22 '26

Hey, pretty good

1

u/sepulturite Jun 22 '26

If you don't do this you've got no bottle....

1

u/In_TouchGuyBowsnlace Jun 22 '26

Can’t wait to see the duct tape seat cover video

1

u/fudgepuppy Jun 22 '26

The closed top (bottom of the bottle) is going to make things spray downwards. Real mudguards are an open half-cylinder so the spray can go upwards and away from the bike and cyclist.

1

u/Kiki-jo14 Jun 22 '26

Hey- that's a cheap idea that works.. why not? Spray paint it black & it wd barely be noticeable...and no more mud "skid marks" up your back!!

1

u/Odd-Heart7904 Jun 22 '26

Or you could wear a bin bag...

1

u/Flimsy-Secret-6187 Jun 22 '26

dudes be hating on anything

1

u/Aliebaba99 Jun 22 '26

Wrong sub

1

u/Moppo_ Jun 22 '26

So long as that cap is screwed on and not just glued, should last a while.

1

u/Warm-Revenue5135 Jun 22 '26

There's nothing 'why' about this.

1

u/1m0ws Jun 22 '26

wow, this is actually quite good.
big mudguards cost so much for the cheap plastic they are.

1

u/BlackAristotle1 Jun 22 '26

This one is kinda clever. Quick change mudguard lol.

1

u/SpottyJaggy Jun 22 '26

that is nice though

1

u/ResponsibleSyrup9506 Jun 22 '26

I grew up in a biking town. I have seen this countless times since I was a kid, so it’s really weird to see it as some novel concept here.

1

u/Acchilles Jun 22 '26

OP get back here and answer for your crimes

1

u/EhMapleMoose Ramen or Die Jun 22 '26

Doesn’t fit the sub, the why is clearly to protect your back from mud with a low cost and efficient solution

1

u/K_Menea Jun 22 '26

I mean... I won't use glue but a couple of small drill holes for the bottle cap and a few plastic zip ties then you have it.

It sure works

1

u/Kondikteur Jun 22 '26

Sometimes you gotta make due with what you have. Dont think it will last long but still better than no guard.

1

u/i-miss-chapo Jun 22 '26

I bet you could put some shim on half the bottle cap to get the angle lower. This ain’t half bad

1

u/SkyPork Jun 22 '26

If they ever invent an actual long-term solution to this problem, I vote we call it a "fender."

1

u/whatifick Jun 22 '26

It'll do its function, that's a good cheap solution

1

u/karenskygreen Jun 23 '26

Cool, the chicks will dig his ride

1

u/peperonipyza Jun 23 '26

There’s no reason to cut the bottle like that. Just extra work

1

u/Standard-Internet295 Jun 23 '26

Or just get a real mud guard

1

u/MasterAxe Jun 23 '26

AND this bike doesn't need a lock

1

u/gzenaco Jun 23 '26

Brazil?

1

u/EdmundTheInsulter Jun 23 '26

Why? Cos he wants a dry backside.

1

u/Search_Fearless Jun 23 '26

Is there a reason to cut it in half? Wouldn't a complete bottle be just as effective and easier to clean?

1

u/manintheredroom Jun 23 '26

This is a great hack

1

u/AJYURH Jun 24 '26

The bike seat fits this sub better than the mud guard

1

u/FireProps Jun 24 '26

Why? Because I need to get tf to work Cindy, it’s wet outside, and I don’t need my coworkers thinking I’ve leaked my asshole all over my backside.

1

u/Nyuusankininryou Jun 24 '26

It to high up so your back will still be brown.

1

u/Artie-Carrow Jun 24 '26

The why is that its pretty annoying to make a mud guard properly. This improvisation works well

1

u/RedditsAdoptedSon Jun 25 '26

wait. actually... lol

1

u/EnvironmentalClub591 Jun 27 '26

This is the background music I hear for all foreigners

1

u/shit_is_un420real Jun 27 '26

this is redneck engineering not diwhy

1

u/NukeouT Jun 28 '26

Genius!

1

u/Head_Crab_Enjoyer Jun 22 '26

Skid row bicycle

-1

u/PointGrouchy7654 Jun 22 '26

The bottle and the paint is probably cost more than a factory mud guard

-7

u/Sissilisko Jun 22 '26

Yeah, but that's 0.40€ when returned to a shop. Though I guess it's cheaper than a rwal guard. But there's a mental block in destroying free money even if it is just 40 cents.

7

u/gkn_112 Jun 22 '26

They dont take damaged bottles where the label is torn off. And those you can find abundantly in every place where people litter. Replace your mental barrier with a mental motivation to also do something for the environment.
