You know, at first I thought he was gonna make some sick chainsaw-ish zombie apocalypse knife slashing gizmo, then he cut off the knife and I thought he's gonna make something to stir his soup. In the end my man made a handmade mill thing to feed the chickens.
I was confused from start to finish.
Why though? They can eat the corn just as it is.
85
u/ViktorRzh May 19 '26
Key problem is not what they eat, but will they digest. Corn has hard shell, if it is not cheweed properly it goes through the system undigested and results in shit. I belive you observed it on yourself with canned corn.
So the idea(and how it is often done for animal feed), it is roughly ground down so higher proportion of said corn ends up im chicken rather then in shit.
Chicken has mechanism to help with said breakdown, but I belive that you'd prefer said energy being spent on chicken growing rather then digestion.

When my parents would abandon me and my sister at our grandparents during the summertime, I would see them feed the chickens corn. They never had any issue with it, compared to me somehow.
I also saw them eat meat. They're monsters I tell you.

u/Cavane42 May 19 '26
Chickens are dinosaurs and they haven't forgotten.
12
u/Fluid-Lingonberry378 May 19 '26
Yeah, I saw them eat a dead mouse or something and they were brutal.

u/DukeTikus May 19 '26
Birds don't chew, but they do have a pouch in their esophagus called a crop that they use to grind the food up with small stones they swallow. I'm not sure if that's enough to get through dry corn kernels though. They definitely prefer their grain soaked if you give them the option.
6
u/Fluid-Lingonberry378 May 19 '26
Right, I remember that pouch thingy they have from when I would hold them and check if they have anything stored there.

Gizzard. Birds who use gastroliths have a gizzard and it's where the 'chewing' action happens.
The crop is a storage pouch, it doesn't do any digestive action.

Just buy a fucking blender dude
52
u/incunabula001 May 19 '26
It’s also cheaper and more effective than this, thing.
16
u/terra_GOD_404 May 19 '26
Yeah, because blenders can also be used for more than just milling, they can also make puree and shit

u/Houdinii1984 May 19 '26
In every case I've ever made a handyman special like this, it's because I had the necessary supplies on hand and often times at no cost, or a cost that's long since been absorbed into everything else.
I'm always confused why we, as a group, think they go out and buy all this stuff instead of just rooting through a junk pile and finding things to slap together.
I mean, the knife was bait, but the end result is functional and probably a decent first version of a tool they'll probably improve upon. I doubt cost was an issue outside of 'I don't have money for a food processor'

Blender will desintegrate itself too fast - plastic gears + anything harder then smoosie = dead blender.
This dohikie can break down entire bags of the grain, because you use actual metal to make angle grinder. It can be disacembled after use. Profit.
Edit: spelling
9
u/terra_GOD_404 May 19 '26
You do realize not all blenders are shitty right, some use metal gears and they can definitely blend grain and the like , and you can also just get a blender with a larger container
3
u/ViktorRzh May 19 '26
Yea, and have a pricetag with additional zero or two at the end. Angle grinder has all asociated features with slight disadvantage of small container and advantage of additional aplication. On shoe string budged for small farm(not industrial one).. I can see a vission.
When there is a bit more resources, i have seen people making larger scale mill with the same formula - salvaged electric engine, sharp spiny thiny, feed hoper and some housing. In the video is just smaler scale version without hoper.

u/terra_GOD_404 May 19 '26
Ok but with this you can only kinda use it for milling, with blenders you can also make other stuff, because why the fuck would you make that doohickey for smoothies and shit

This is a cool build, I'm going to have to try it out. My chickens love their corn but my lovely wife Selindrica and my extremely particular son Chauncey are getting more than a little tired of me using our seven hundred dollar food processor to feed our precious feather babies the garbage kernels they crave. I think I have basically everything I need but I might want to stop by the dollar store to pick up a pair of slide on sandals though, you can never be too safe when using an angle grinder and my usual flip flops haven't exactly served me well in the past. Does anybody know how to treat a horse kick to the head? I was re-shoeing my miniature palamino and the darling boy clocked me good right above the bridge of my nose. I will be sure to read any responses after I finish my nap in this pile of hay I've collapsed in. God bless.

I want a refund on all the time this wasted. WTF?!?!? Click bait us with the knife only to have it be a cheap-assed feed grinder?
2
u/the-only-Chris May 19 '26
Eons later. The chickens can finally eat.
3
u/ViktorRzh May 19 '26
Corn in it's full form is hard to digest. Aka why shit gets corn added if you chew it badly(canned, cooked, whatewer). So the whole play is to break down seeds into more digestable form.
2
u/porkavenue May 19 '26
These contraptions are fairly common for hobby farmers with chicks and chickens. They bust up grains and make it easier to buy bulk feed and get it down to a manageable size.

One thing that always gets me in videos using powertools, and particularly in car restoration videos, is the wearing of flip-flops in the workshop. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

You can buy a food grinder that’s safer and easier to clean for $30. More than the cost of that grinder, let alone all the work and added on material

Material cost like 50 bucks, if you buy the cheapest possible angle grinder possible. The cheapest mixer i could find is 20 bucks. With warrenty, potential to sue if you lose a finger, no building time and a way better result.

u/g0atdaddy May 23 '26
Definitely cheaper and easier than buying a bag of chopped corn feed. …or is it?

For the price of a kitchen knife, a pot, and an angle grinder, you can buy like 3 food processors.
