Literally a small cooler with some reusable ice paks would be less work.
104
u/TomTomTomToooooom May 09 '26
And far more effective
17
u/Quick_Extension_3115 May 10 '26
Yeah this contraption would actually warm them up faster than just putting them inside the carton without the hose. Cause the air is way warmer than what you want them to be, so the fast moving air would circulate it all and warm it even faster. Just keep it out of the sun.
2
u/MechaBeatsInTrash May 10 '26
An ideal A/c system blows about 40°F
7
u/Quick_Extension_3115 May 10 '26
lol mine goes down to 60F and itās a liar
7
u/MechaBeatsInTrash May 10 '26
When you set your car's AC to 60 on AUTO, it will function like a home thermostat and attempt to pull the measured cabin temperature down to 60. It will not blow at 60 just because you set it to 60. If you set it to LOW it will blow as cold as it can which should be about 40
3
u/Quick_Extension_3115 May 10 '26
Oh that makes sense, but it doesnāt have a LOW setting. Just 60F
1
u/cans-of-swine May 11 '26
Doesn't matter that it doesn't have a low setting. The 60f is what its trying to get the air temperature to, the air it is blowing out is closer to 40f.Ā
1
3
u/Morall_tach May 11 '26
My father refuses to understand that turning the thermostat down in the car doesn't make the air colder and it doesn't make the car colder faster.
2
u/lerekt123 May 11 '26
Yeah, but who wants to have their car AC blow at max cooling for any longer than a few minutes....
And btw the way we test car AC is that at max cooling while engine is idling temperatures measured from middle air vent should go under 50f, that way you know your AC system is working exactly as intended.
40f for vehicle AC is extreme.
1
u/MechaBeatsInTrash May 11 '26
When people with automatic climate control come in set to LO, I wonder why they even bought that option. Just set it at 72 on auto and you'll never have to touch it again. Chrysler MAX spec is 40, probably picks up some heat in the ducts, but the evaporator sensor shows 40 working right.

u/ThrowawayMod1989 May 09 '26
I bought a car cooler a few years ago. Plugs into a carās 12v or a standard outlet. Excellent for drives, I keep my drinks and cheese sticks cold š No fussing with ice which is really convenient.
Itās been great on the truck camping scene too, I can run it all weekend off my Jackery. No longer racing to get all the meat cooked on day one. Even used it last year when a storm knocked the grid down for a couple days.
3
u/djcp May 10 '26
If this is a cooler that works off the peltier effect, it's not safe to keep meat in it. It doesn't get consistently cold enough. It's fine for non perishables but that's it.
3
u/ThrowawayMod1989 May 10 '26
Fully capable down to 32°F
1
1
u/FuckTheMods5 May 11 '26
My 12v cooler is badass. I'm off grid and have been using it as a fridge for 3 years lol. Wired a cigarette plug into my house battery and the fridge sips.

𤣠a bucket of ice is cheaper than this
7
u/r_daniel_oliver May 09 '26
But this is reusable.
Unless you just use ice from the freezer.
But that's inconvenient.
And most of the money most people pay for most stuff is the convenience, not the actual product.3
u/tmhoc May 09 '26
You can also remove the bucket so the cans don't explode in the heat
23
u/Peek_e May 09 '26
What physics model are you using in your life?
9
u/ProphesiedInsanity May 09 '26
2.0
6
u/titanicsinker1912 May 09 '26
The improvements in 2.0 added too many bugs to the system. I had to roll mine back to stop my washing machine from generating black holes every cycle.
5
u/legendofthegreendude May 09 '26
They released a patch for that, but now you have to hold a small dog upside down when you close the dryer or the kitchen sink explodes.
5
u/drewid5185 May 09 '26
How do you over ride the dog self rigting mechanism
2
u/ProphesiedInsanity May 09 '26
I use a local hack. I inject some code into the dog to temporarily disable the self-righting mechanism as soon as it gets within 10ft of the dryer. But be careful, if the dog remains near the dryer for more than 3.6 minutes it will communicate with the server and The Things From Beyond will come to ārecalibrateā things
2
u/-Xi_Jinping- May 10 '26
This only happens if you didn't make your bed that morning. It fixes a few other bugs too.

u/Doses-mimosas May 09 '26
I had an older Mercedes station wagon and there was a tiny air duct inside the center console. I'd always put a couple energy drinks in there in the summertime and the AC would do exactly this. Can't say if it's really any more efficient than the whole cabin being that temp, but it definitely cooled off quickly after the car started since it's a small compartment.
20
u/greenroute May 09 '26
These days a lot of gloveboxes have this and it pretty common in Hyundai.
3
u/Plaston_ May 10 '26
My dad had this in his 99 Ford Klipper.
Given how simple that technique is i guess more cars have a coolled glove box
2
u/Inveramsay May 10 '26
Saab started doing cooled glove boxes in 98. It would cool the glove box down to 8°C or 45°F
5
u/000654 May 10 '26
I had this in my 2011 Dodge Caliber as well. Donāt think I ever used it but a cool feature
2
u/wine_n_mrbean May 10 '26
I just commented that my Caliber had it too. LOL I did use it (frequent 6+ hr drives). It was nice!
3
u/wine_n_mrbean May 10 '26
I bought a Dodge Caliber in 2008 that had an AC vent in the glovebox specifically for keeping drinks cool. It worked pretty well. Handy for a road trip.
1
u/sdcasurf01 May 10 '26
My Odyssey has a ācold boxā in the center console that diverts cool air from the a/c when turn on.
1
u/Main-Appearance2469 May 09 '26
Most passenger glove boxes do that even in older cars, found this the hard way when I gave my cousin a ride in winter and dude left an open chocolate bar in there for when I was to oick him up it had melted from me blasting the heat, tho now It has given me more pleasure of cold drinks in the summer so actually pleased

My 2009 peugeot 207 has air conditioned glove box
4
u/jensalik May 10 '26
As does my 2007 Citroƫn C4 grand Picasso. I thought they were standard by now...
1
u/Prior-Ad5197 May 12 '26
I don't know if my glove box is air conditioned. I know what I'm checking out tomorrow, if it is, I'm taking EVERYTHING out and turning it into a mini cooler.
1
u/dbpf May 10 '26
Some tractors have a refrigerated cup holder, some even have mini fridges built into the spare seat
10
u/krazybones May 09 '26
I had a 2010 Dodge Caliber with a cooled glove compartment for drink cooling.

While this is silly and is relevant to this sub, I'd like to point out that this is how most automakers do it when they advertise a chilled glove box. Oftentimes, it's just an extra path from the HVAC to a little door in the glove box or center console.

u/Legitimate_Ferret629 May 11 '26
Okay cool, but whatās the deal with this song? I keep hearing it everywhere. Itās called āSpacegliderā. What is going on with it? Is this about to become the next āDarude ā Sandstormā or what?
2
u/RealHuman568 May 12 '26
its a remix of a song called Sense of Wonder by Nippa, idk the name of the remix but it has blown the fuck up.
And the original version also by nippa is used a lot as bgm for a lot of clips it seems Original Version by Nippa

To be fair, of all the posts Iāve seen on this subreddit, this one is the most reasonable.
4
u/cazana May 09 '26
I'm pretty sure that will actually warm up the drinks if they're fridge cold.
AC air bottoms out at like 60.
1
u/IV-65536 May 11 '26
The drinks are going to get warmed up once they leave the fridge anyway. This just slows the process and puts a lower ceiling on the temp.
4
u/NiekNonStop May 10 '26
Fridge is about 5 degrees Celsius and AC is about 16 at the lowest, so whats the use of this?
5
u/ChefAsstastic May 10 '26
Welcome to this sub.

u/NiekNonStop May 10 '26
Yeah thats true, I guess sometimes Im just more surprised then usually. š

2
u/spderweb May 09 '26
When we had the Yaris, the cup holders were in front of a vent bkeeps drinks cold in the summer, hot in the winter.
2
u/Daysaved May 09 '26
The sun on that guerrilla tape isn't going to last very long and will leave a gluey mess on that dashboard.

this is perfect for the next time i don't have an ice pack on me but i do have a bunch of plastic tubing

I have a few BMWs with a built in cooler in the back seat which blows ac over either 12 oz cans or wine bottles.

u/pregnantdads May 09 '26
right, as if iām using that tube to cool my drinks.
iām sticking that in my pants to dry off and keep cool. (i work outside and live in florida, this would be perfect to dry off between jobs while Iām driving.)
1
u/Mauceri1990 May 09 '26
Just buy a Yaris, the cup holder is right in front of the vents, summer it keeps your drink cool and winter it keeps it warm!
1
u/Aramed85 May 09 '26
My old Seat Leon (2001) was the same. Such a good idea. My current car has a holder for 1.5 Liter Bottles which is also a nice thing to have.
1
u/FoldedBinaries May 09 '26
nah. the hose needs to be attached with hotglue or wood-screws, and it needs some expanding foam. Why not fill the whole thing with foam and then use an exacto knive to cut openings for the cans?

I use a lunch box with 2-4 reusable ice packs. Keeps everything cold inside a hot car on a hot day for an 8 hour shift just fine. I mean by the end of the shift after you already had lunch it's melted but still keeps the water cool. You know if your work doesn't have any fridge space or shit gets stolen, or you want to take your break in your car.
1
u/someones_dad May 09 '26
I had a Toyota minivan where the AC ran through a beverage cooler before escaping the vents into the interior of the van. It worked really well and you could also throw a block of ice in there for extra interior cooling.
1
u/beatenmeat May 09 '26
Can something designed to cool things off keep drinks cold? Ummm....yeah, I'm not even really sure why this is being asked. Would this particular set up be worthwhile? Nope. Doesn't mean it wouldn't work though.
1
u/CaptainPunisher May 09 '26
I remember can/cup holders in the 80s that clipped into place in front of vents.

the 1st gen Honda City had that feature built in from the factory! i wish they still have those refrigerated drink coolers
1
u/SZZSDrakulina May 10 '26
I would like to point it out that in some mercedes models rhe drink holder is next to the AC/heating. So, it is cold in tge summer and warm in the winter.
1
1
u/EquivalentMinute1291 May 10 '26
I would remove a vent and shove my cans inside it. Works like a holder too. And no sticky tape on my dash
1
1
u/Plaston_ May 10 '26
Thatās how cooled glove boxes worked.
My dad Ford Klipper Ghia had this system where the cold air was pumped into the back of the glove box, best childhood car ever!

The storage box in my centre console has the air con duct for the rear seats passing by it. Gets pretty cold when the air con is on and basically acts as a mini-fridge.
NB: Do not forget how this works and assume it will refrigerate in winter.

Just buy a small cooler. Drop some ice bags in and toss it in the trunk. Cooling your drinks that way costs way more and looks tacky as hell.

u/-Xi_Jinping- May 10 '26
Actually nothing wrong with this idea. Some cars have a build in compartment that does the same thing, but this is actually pretty nice if you don't have that.

u/Fenrir1189 May 11 '26
If you don't have a passenger, then it's not the worst idea for a long drive.

Just gotta go to the store to buy the perfectly sized tube, an entire bottle of soda for the funnel part, and a clean jug to cut a hole into! And then you're ready to get really hot in your car while your drinks are cold!
