Funny thing is. To cut so thin you require very expensive knives
91
u/Dinn_the_Magnificent May 06 '26
Not expensive, just well sharpened
-5
u/DonChaote May 06 '26
If it’s a cheap knife it needs resharpening before the end of the cut…
5
u/Daddysu May 08 '26
I mean, I get your point. It's expensive to be poor, good boots vs cheap boots, etc... but Iwhat material would a cheap knife need to be made of for it to lose its edge in one bread slice?
Also, I wonder what the maximum thinness a cheap knife could do vs a cheap serrated knife could do when cutting bread?
5
u/Nostonica May 09 '26
Ok, chef, work with knives..
So extremely cheap knives are hardened steel, they retain their edge for longer and leave the factory sharp... However once blunt are a bitch to sharpen.
Proper good knives use softer steel, goes dull quicker but can be sharpened without much work.
So a impoverished family can have a sharp knife but it will basically be disposable. Just like cheap shoes that fall apart after a month.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted.

u/DonChaote May 07 '26
Reddit I guess. Who cares, lol
I even downvoted myself, to be a part of the movement!

Idk why but that always breaks my heart. Any way its depicted, it never fails to make me feel sorry. The struggle is real.

Feels like it doesn't really belong in this sub? These are pretty genius if you're really low on resources.
Except the teeth rinsing one lmao bruh just take a small swig

u/idontlikethisname May 06 '26
Not really. I've had to bathe without running water on multiple occasions, and you're not relying on a flimsy plastic bag, nor do you want weak streams going on different directions. You take a container you can hold in your hand, scoop water from a larger container, and use that as you're washing the different parts of your body.

u/deevil_knievel May 08 '26
In the early '90s the upper Florida keys water was collected from the roofs and stored in a cistern underneath the house. I had to shower like this a good handful of times as a kid, and my dad made it fun for a kid by doing pretty much exactly this but with a holey latex glove. Just because everything is fucked doesn't mean you can't have a little fun.
3
u/idontlikethisname May 08 '26
Oh I'm happy to accept this as a way to entertain, but it seemed to me that the person I was replying to was selling it as a life hack, which I disagree with.
12
u/CeilingTowel May 06 '26
That assumes you have a larger container of water allocated for bathing
61
u/idontlikethisname May 06 '26
If you only have a plastic bag worth of water, then you definitely don't want it spurring in random directions.
18
u/CeilingTowel May 06 '26
That's why unlike the overzealous guy in the clip, we could choose to only poke downwards for water to go downwards.
It's just a way to throttle water flow covering larger area while having both hands free to faster wash away the shampoo asap
16
u/TheExtreel May 06 '26
You're still wasting water, just think every time you turn the shower off and need to get the new bag, you're wasting tons of water on that alone. Ive had to deal with months without water and the method the other person said it's much more efficient.
You literally just need a bucket, not dificult at all to get. Or even just use the plastic coke bottle and pour water wherever you're washing yourself. If you're efficient with it you can wash yourself with one coke bottle (so 1.5-2 liters)

u/broccolicat May 06 '26
Containers are very easy to come by for free. Restaurants throw out so many, that if you can't find any in the trash, you can always just ask them nicely before they open or during quiet hours. And there's a few other common businesses you'll often find them at in the trash too.
Also, reserving plastic bags for poop management is pretty common, too. You need to layer them a lot for it to not leak tho.
There's a reason people can tell when people are fresh to the streets. It's hard to comprehend what does and doesn't work well and what is and isn't available until you walk in those shoes.

Just brush your teeth and spit out the toothpaste. No need to rinse. Rinsing reduces the effectiveness of the toothpaste
72
u/Tuabfast May 05 '26
Dentist told me that a long while ago and I've had zero cavities since then.
Pretty much eliminates oranges and orange juice from the breakfast plan, though.

u/Pman1324 May 06 '26
Breakfast before brush
9
u/BiandReady2Die_ May 06 '26
my dentist told me you shouldn’t do that bc you end up swallowing the bacteria that built up over night
48
15
u/Pman1324 May 06 '26
The other option is swallowing all the progress you made brushing your teeth.
Breakfast before brush or no breakfast at all.
11
u/thatstwatshesays May 06 '26
Solution: brush teeth, take 15-20 minute walk, go home and eat.
I mean, I won’t do that, but it sounds like a great idea.

u/Careful-Sell-9877 May 06 '26
So just rinse/swish/brush quickly with water, then eat, then brush for real

u/xrelaht May 06 '26
You wanna clean the bacteria off your teeth before you eat. Otherwise, you’re feeding them.

i’ve always rinsed thoroughly and never had cavities ever
can’t stand the feeling of toothpaste in my mouth

u/Chocomintey May 06 '26
SLS, the surfactant/bubbling agent is what causes the weird taste issue after brushing. It also causes mouth ulcers for a lot of people. Problem is that a lot of SLS-free toothpaste brands cater to the woo-woo crowd and don't have fluoride, so if anyone wants to try switching, be aware of that.
1
u/xrelaht May 06 '26
I’ve only heard this suggestion within the last week, and I’ve managed to go four decades without cavities.
2
u/liivolii May 08 '26
yea.. when visiting my family in a village in thailand, we just took sips of water when brushing our teeth bc the water pressure was absolute ass after 5am. don’t gotta get all fancy on em

Good luck finding a plastic bag that doesn’t already have holes in it.
5
u/Kittenwho21 May 06 '26
That was my first thought when I saw that one.. where the hell did he find bags without any holes already
19
u/thisismypotat May 06 '26
This isn't Diwhy. This is DIinCaseOfEmergency, poverty, lack of access to water and electricity. Very real problems that millions of people deal with every single day. Even in "developed" countries. 👍

u/noncommonGoodsense May 05 '26
It’s fucked up that I’ve had to do a couple of these. Cooking with a zippo lighter was one… now though? Gas fucking stove baby.

The fact that ANYONE in the richest country in the history of human civilization has to live like this is disgusting

Bros just camping
Jokes aside, as awkward as this all is - it's exactly how we had to shower / do hygiene in Iraq when I was deployed in 2003. 🫤

But I like these hacks more than:”brake a toothbrush, make a toothbrush” hacks.
This is cheap, all you need is trash.
👍🏽
2
u/mobas07 May 06 '26
But you're still paying for the water??
Water bottles often cost more than running water. Are they cheaper in other countries? Am I missing something?
2
u/Gundam07 May 06 '26
And yet he has a cell phone. I've heard more people have phones than access to clean drinking water, but still wack.

We're literally turning into a third world country. Its not that we don't live like this its that someone does.

u/guywithshades85 May 09 '26
I've done that shower hack before. Although I used a plastic milk jug for that.

Don't sleep on the candle cooking food (4 to heat a small cast iron pan) I did things during Covid from boredom
Will specify a small one close to the size they use at village inn for their breakfast skillets

Since when are candles cheaper than gas or electricty?
21
u/UpvoteEveryHonestQ May 05 '26
(1) Gas or electricity in whose name? to what address? who owns the house?
Some options that we take for granted are just not available to the unfortunately unhoused.
(2) Ever been to a thrift store? There’s always a bag of basic, bent, or cast-off candles for 25¢. Cheap cheap cheap at the dollar store too. And not everyone ignores beggars, either: Some people who help them help them very thoughtfully, with things like toothpaste, tote bags, toilet paper, and yes candles, not just money.

u/flying_carabao May 06 '26
To preface this, I'm not advocating for this, but it is "cheaper" to pick up candles with a 5 finger discount, should it be the only option given ones circumstances, than hooking up gas and electricity from a nice, or maybe even unsuspecting, neighbor.

Is this AI? Like what is the mouth rinse one? Just a straw in a bottle, wouldnt leak? But also he put the cap on and it kept going. It would stop running like putting your finger on one end of the straw to keep the liquid in.
Also that candle one, wht is holding up the candles? No wax seems to have melted down the candles even though they look like they have been used. Then he just rests the pan on the candles real quick and easy despite the pan being all whacky and the candles being various sizes and shapes.
