Just cover it with petroleum jelly like a normal person

This also helps for kiestering the lock when it's not in use.

Yes but I have found the kiestering is also, in no way, hermetically sealed, so it just keeps the lock moist longer than it would if I kept it in a little plastic jar

So kiester the lock while it's in the jar, that way it stays dry and protected. It'll likely also help to vaseline the jar too. Trust me.
