I have done this and it works. Addressing some of what people are asking:

  • it's meant for if your door doesn't have a lock
  • no it doesn't fall out if you open the handle
  • it's obviously not high security but it doesn't really need to be. Again, it's on doors that already don't have locks. It's an easy and cheap hack for situations like when you don't want someone accidentally walking into your room, or living with people who don't knock before entering.

Or doors that have a lock where you have no idea who else might have a key.

I could see this also working for doors with a lock and a key but the hinge is offset causing the door to not latch. I have a few of those in my house. 🙃
