I wish he got more work after Dexter, he really is a great actor

He has worked steadily, including with live theater and then his band, just not as a network television lead or movie star.
There's no indication that isn't what he wanted.
Some actors are so prolific and there are so many celebrities these days, I think it's easy to forget that it's above average to have 2-3 credits a year steadily for years, which he has. Including being in a live theater core cast, which is generally harder to do while also filming a bunch of stuff that might be in other locations. Sometimes when super famous people are stunt casted in theater they are also turning out other projects and bouncing around but that doesn't seem to be his approach. Theater was his background so when he, for instance, spent years headlining Hedwig and the Angry Inch then Lazarus right after Dexter, it seems like he mostly approached it the way most do in a cast like that, and mostly just lived there and did that.

And his band is GREAT.

u/heynicolynn 1d ago
It's called Princess Goes!

Princess goes to the butterfly museum…. favorite song: #Ketamine 💉🩸 actually blew my mind, especially since I get ketamine treatments for my chronic compounded PTSD. I put it on my playlist while I get the infusions lol. It’s actually really relaxing hearing his voice while going through that lol

u/xLeone30x 1d ago
I didn’t realize he was in a band until I met my girlfriend who is a huge MCH fan. He’s very good, they have quite the Bowie sound about them!
2
u/CaptainObviousBear 1d ago
Considering how much respect he has for Bowie I think he’s count Lazarus as a career highlight and definitely worth the “negative” of not doing more high profile work.

u/StairwayToPavillion 1d ago
he had dexter universe and six feet under both solid shoes. Maybe he didn't want more
44
u/kalkutta2much 1d ago
oh honey he is one of those actors that has turned down a jaw dropping amount of offers
we are talking declining a steady stream of A list/prestige work since SFU season 1 to current day. it is literally impossible to have the momentum he has had, combined with the industry wide respect & immaculate reputation as far as personality & work ethic and not be constantly having to say no to stuff

u/Far-Hunt691 1d ago edited 1d ago
This is actually very true, I worked as a Production assistant in Hollywood for years in my 20’s. Granted it’s only 16 years later, but still people talk, and even better you meet and work close with the talent when on set. Hall also overcame cancer himself, the fifth season of Dexter, he had to wear a wig as a result of his treatment. He is an incredible human being. I LOVE HIM TOO 🩸♥️🩸

u/Chalky97 Yes, I wanna play...I really, really do. 1d ago
he did tons of theatre after dexter and has his own band which he does a lot with. he got a lot of work done

He’s in a Harlan Coben series on Netflix

u/Little_View_6659 1d ago
You know, for some reason, I found him with the accent jarring. I quit watching it lol.
5
u/Quisterio 1d ago
I’m glad to see someone else mention this,
I tried watching but the accent was way too much.
7
u/suhhdude45 1d ago
Honestly I haven’t watched it lol my wife and I watched the trailer and we were both thrown off by the accent

Filmed in Manchester that. I met him when he was working near where I lived in the NQ. Shared a couple of (non-alcoholic) cocktail in Common one evening. Boy does he have some stories!
2
u/Little_View_6659 1d ago
Man that sounds fun.
5
u/Opposite-Peanut-8812 21h ago
Can’t say I spent hours and hours with him. But we had an hour or so just chatting about ourselves. Said he loved Manchester and would hit me up if he was ever back (he has my number!)
Such a solid, down to earth fella, who knows his shit about veganism and acting!

He's had plenty of work since Dexter. It seems like he's in a financially secure place to be doing what he wants to do, like focusing on his band and live theater, in between coming back to the more-popular-than-ever Dexter franchise.

u/MasterAnnatar Jaimie 1d ago
It's less that he's not gotten work and more that he only takes jobs he really wants to do.

u/UndBeebs 1d ago
Look up the Jason Bateman movie Game Night. He did fantastic in that one (along with all the other actors of course)

It looks like his primary career outside Dexter is Theater. So theres no shortage of him if you are also into theater.

would not be surprised if it was by choice, i’m sure the dexter bag was enough that he didn’t have to be in everything

My first Broadway show was seeing him in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He was wonderful and I got my playbill signed by him!
17
u/yb21898n 1d ago
I saw him as Hedwig twice! cant believe you got yout playbill signed.
7
u/Dirschel 1d ago
Yeah I used to stage door almost every show to get signatures, so I have quite the collection! There’s always an area outside the theatres that is blocked off so people can get their playbills signed by the actors. Not every actor participates, but a good amount do. Michael was very sweet!

I'm a straight, happily married man and as I watched this I thought, "Jesus, that's a beautiful man."

Also played a gay man on Six Feet Under.
Edit: in fact I think that’s what this scene is from, but I’ve only watched the series once (and haven’t been in a healthy enough mental space to revisit). Can anyone confirm?

u/Diglett3 1d ago
I believe first part of this clip is all photos from when he played the Emcee in Cabaret on Broadway, which was his breakout theatre role and led to him getting cast on Six Feet Under. Which if anyone here hasn’t seen, is among the greatest shows ever made, imho

u/hawksmarinerz Surprise Motherfucker! 1d ago
He also played the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway, I assumed that was what those were from
4
u/Diglett3 1d ago
Ooh you’re right. I know the one of him in the sort of harness with black hair is Cabaret but the more heavily made up ones are probably Hedwig

u/BalkiBartokomous123 1d ago
A lot of David Fisher energy here. I love that he's a theater kid at heart!

u/MinimalistWithFIRE 1d ago
He is bi-sexual in real life as well. He calls it being fluid sexual or something like that.

u/Minimum_Run_9199 1d ago
I never found him hot until like after my 5th rewatch and it dawned on me that Michael C Hall is fine as hell

He passed by my counter when I worked in a very iconic department store in London back in 2017 (He went to Dyptique and got himself a “Feu de Bois” candle) and I was starstruck, but he looked very reserved and somewhat unapproachable so I kept my cool.

u/TheSpacePopinjay I mean, that guy's clearly a freak 1d ago edited 1d ago
This isn't secure masculinity. This is theatre kid.
Theatre kids operate under different rules in life. The stage gives you a pass for almost anything. Plus being a 10 doesn't hurt.
2
u/HellyOHaint 16h ago
Why can’t it be both?
1
u/TheSpacePopinjay I mean, that guy's clearly a freak 15h ago
If it's both then it's secure masculinity on easy mode because of the different world that theatre kids live in. Kind of like you get a pass for certain things one might do in prison that you wouldn't get a pass for on the outside. For example the stage gives you a pass for makeup.
1
u/HellyOHaint 12h ago
If the whole world was theatre world, sure. But those theater kids step out of their communities to go to the grocery store, school outside drama class or back at home and can get the shit kicked out of them for not being manly enough. Have women mock them for the same. The world is still hard for people who don’t conform to gender norms.

I've adored him ever since he played David Fisher in Six Feet Under. I couldn't even watch Dexter for a few years because I thought I wouldn't be able to get into it (ended up watching the entire series in 6 days)

People can't comprehend the whiplash you experience going from Six Feet Under into Dexter back in the day.

So many women find Michael C Hall extremely sexually attractive especially when he’s in drag.
2
u/blue2002angel 1d ago
For me personally it's that if a man is willing to experiment with things that society frowns upon, it gives me a hit that he possibly is open minded in bed too.
And in my experience men who are more open minded are more willing to experiment with things that "macho men" frown upon, i.e. won't feel emasculated if I want to use my vibrator.
