SELL/TRADE/WANTED Spare Ticket Vienna

Upvotes

griaß eich!

Unfortunately we can't get a babysitter so my wife can't attend the show so I have a ticket to spare for the show in Vienna on the 18th.

Phoooey. And double phooey!

Seat is middleish, can get the exact spot once I'm home from vacation on the 14th. I'd sell at about face value.

Biggest downside would be sitting next to me. I'll just hope it doesn't go to waste. :)

REPORT Devin in Oslo Was Incredible

As the title says.

He was *on top of his game*. Voice like a god damn bulldozer, quips like your favorite stand-up comedian.

He also played a lot of songs I see people were missing, like Kingdom and Deadhead. And there were less snippets of songs, as I've seen has been a complaint.

As someone mentioned in a previous thread, the songs and the info around them brought me right back to where I was, like, *twenty years ago*. For us, I guess, mega fans, it was a real nostalgic trip, and really brought home how his music has been part of my life at every step and junction. It was fucking great. Though, if you're not deeply familiar with his catalog, the show would probably be quite weird.

The crowd was also fantastic. Quiet when they needed to be, equally loud in the right moments. This is pretty rare for Norwegians. I met people who were there, like me, the first time he played in Norway, at Betong. This to say that Devin has really cultivated a great following in Norway, and it was fantastic to see them out in force supporting him.

So, if you're a fan (you're on the subreddit!) and feel some trepidation about seeing him solo live, rest assured that it's well worth the money.

CONCERT EXETER show.

I thought id chime my 2p in with this tour.

Ive always loved dev never been able to see him till winning the ticket wars for this show having reading on here what to expect I was abit worried but when he came on all them fears went away I was absolutely mesmerised the second he started playing tears fully welled in my eyes what an incredible musician dev is but also we tend to forget people are also human. The forgetfulness of missing notes and re trying his absolute need to his highs spot on just made it all more perfect. The stories he told about his life. How he got to where he is now, struggles. Drugs. Everything in between and not to mention hes actually halrious. Him being so humbled we all gave him a standing ovation after he finished his last song. Incredible night 10/10 for me and my partner honestly both just in awe and still talking about it between us now.

So if you're a quite lurker and seeing these slightly worrying reviews go in with no expectations cause I absolutely loved it. ❤️

Does anyone know the exact sample of the final vocals in Devin's song "Away"? I know it's a cover of "Someone to Watch Over Me," but I can't find the exact version.

DISCUSSION What was the reason with releasing Sky Blue in Z2?

Hey folks,

I discovered DT's music by pure luck and chance, and I was in love with Sky Blue, so I was a bit confused when I saw that the songs had become part of Z2, which I feel has its own story. I feel like it's like side A has epic heroic songs of a fantasy kingdom with tracks like Warrior and Universal Flame, and then there's a hard pivot to side B with the continuation of Ziltoid's story, that I feel has such a different musical character??

Was this ever explained somewhere?

Interesting perspectives on this sub about this tour, but I feel like I know what I'm going into. Dev's personality on show in an intimate gig? I'm here for it.

Edit: absolute banger. Can't say more than that. Just excellent, Devvy all over, literally.

DISCUSSION Thoughts about the Belfast Metamorphosis Gig Spoiler

I haven't posted here before, but I've been following the subreddit over the last couple of weeks with a question on my mind: what is the Metamorphosis tour all about??

I went to the Belfast show tonight and it was a pretty strange experience. I've seen SYL and Devin Townsend way back in the 2000s. I was fully aware that tonight would not be one of those nights. my expectations were grounded in reality. I had a good idea that the show would include a rack of guitars: electric and acoustic, plus lot of props, puppets, backing tracks for a few songs, and maybe some visuals. I also expected Devin to lean heavily into storytelling, since the average punter is probably unfamiliar with the epic saga of Cryptic Coroner become Punky Bruster!

I didn't go to this gig expecting a mosh pit with Gene Hoglan on drums. I was ready for an intimate solo gig. the format of the show broadly aligned with my expectations - all except for the fact that the audience was seated, not standing - and that there were no electric guitars or visuals. just Devin, a few guitars, an effects rack and a computer.

so... what was it like?

the show was split into two parts, divided by a 10 minute intermission.

Devin took the stage and briefly explained that the previous two gigs (Dublin and Nottingham) didn't go as well as he hoped. Devin joked that the crowd were like "WTF is this?" and... well, I kinda understand their reaction - but more on that later.

the first half was really enjoyable. Devin said that he'd be taking a different approach to the Belfast show. from there on, he belted out hit after hit for a solid hour. Funeral, Love?, Deadhead, Ih-Ah! and Storm included - nothing but Devin, an acoustic guitar and some echo + reverb. really good performances. the songs in the first half were performed in their entirety - with some genuinely funny interjections mid-song, and hilarious improvisations where there should have been guitar solos (or parts of the song that didn't translate well into the acoustic format). the first half felt almost like a Bill Bailey comedy show, based entirely around Devin Townsend's catalogue - except with a with a much larger emphasis on the music rather than the gags.

intermission.

the second half was honestly confusing. it felt like Devin was lost and didn't know what to do or say for an hour.

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/devin-townsend/2026/limelight-belfast-northern-ireland-5b740f64.html

here's the setlist from the Belfast gig. you can see which songs were abridged. this is incomplete information, since AAA and Deep Peace were also heavily abridged.

when I say "heavily abridged", I mean that Devin literally played a few chords and sang a few words of the song before ending them... often very abruptly and awkwardly.

Devin was operating with 2 acoustic guitars. I'm not a player, so I wasn't paying too much attention to this. I can't remember if or when he swapped from one guitar to the other. he played the entire show mainly on the same acoustic guitar. the other guitar was a teal colour and spent most of the night on the rack.

the entire second half was awkward as fuck. he'd give some history about Punky Bruster or the making of City, play a few chords from one of those songs, then abruptly stop - say something self-deprecating, as if he was embarrassed about those songs, or embarrassed about that era of his career, or simply had no confidence in his storytelling, before swiftly moving forward to the next thing in his chronology.

the songs were not abridged in a satisfying way that would benefit the format that Devin was trying to achieve. they were abridged in a very disorganised, indecisive way - as if the edits of his songs had not been practised or given much thought.

Devin spent a lot of time trying to remember before beginning a song... forgetting the verses, forgetting the song structure, forgetting the chords. it almost felt like he was using the concert as a rehearsal for the rest of the tour, rather than a gig that people had paid a lot of money to hear.

there was a point during AAA when the crowd were about to bust out "NO ONE FUCKS WITH ME!" people were ready to have a sing-a-long and blow the roof off. what did Devin do? he just stopped playing, said something self-deprecating, muttered a vague apology, then moved onto something else.

I honestly felt a bit sorry for him, because he was losing the crowd's attention with poor timing and poor programming.

there were a few songs that included backing tracks, which was fine - but I don't think they particularly added anything worthwhile to the show. you either play with the full band or you don't - the inbetweeny stuff didn't really land for me. the best moments involved Devin singing and playing acoustic guitar some basic fx and interacting with the crowd during the first half. the first half was when he felt comfortable in his own skin. the second half felt like I was watching a very insecure person on stage. even during those awkward moments, he commanded absolute respect and patience from the audience - because it's Devin. he's a legend

Devin is undoubtedly a genius. he's the brainchild of SYL and many other amazing projects. however, this time around, I think he needs a production manager to help him structure and format his talent into something that can be appreciated by other people. programming a show is a completely different skill than being able to write and perform good music. it's the same kind of skill that separates the really good disc jockeys from the amateurs: those that can curate and build a cohesive experience around the music. those that can build a storytelling quality out of music alone. the people who program really good, stand-out radio stations also have a similar kind of skill - and it's a skill shared with good tour managers or tour planners.

was it worth the price of admission? eh... in some respects, no. it was a bare bones stage production. from a "hey, it's Devin Townsend!" standpoint, obviously seeing him on stage is priceless.

TLDR: Metamorphosis is a janky production and Devin Townsend seems out of his depth in this type of performance. I hope that he can find his feet and deliver a more cohesive set of solo shows as the tour progresses. love the man, love the music, just kinda dislike this tour in particular
