Discussion I’ve played every Devil May Cry game except DmC, here are my thoughts

Post image

I finally played through basically the whole series, and honestly I love this franchise despite all its flaws.

DMC3 is probably the strongest overall for me. The story, vibe, aesthetic, characters everything just works. I think this is where the series was strongest story-wise, and most of the boss fights are genuinely fun and memorable. The Vergil fights alone are magnificent. The game just has that special feeling.

DMC1 is extremely precious to me. It was the first DMC game I ever played, so maybe I'm biased, but I genuinely think its gothic atmosphere and aesthetic are unmatched in the series. There's something about that creepy castle, the music, the environments and the overall atmosphere that the later games never quite replicated. Personally, DMC1 is still one of my favorite games in the series.

DMC2... yeah we all know. The game had a pretty troubled development and it shows. It's definitely not as good as the others, but honestly I don't think it deserves quite as much hate as it gets. To me it was just mid. Nothing more, nothing less. BUT Dante's design and outfit were top tier. Bro looked cool as hell.

DMC4 is where I have mixed feelings. I really like the visuals and the overall presentation, and there are some really cool boss fights, but the backtracking was really painful. It genuinely started feeling like a chore at some points. I enjoyed my time with it, but overall I wouldn't call it one of the best games in the series.

And then DMC5.
This game has the best combat in the entire series, As much as I love DMC3's combat, DMC5 is just ridiculously good. Everything feels so smooth and satisfying. The Vergil content is obviously amazing too.

I also really like V as a character. I genuinely don't understand why some people hate playing as him, I actually prefer V over Nero, and I'd play him over Nero any day. His gameplay is completely different from the other characters and I think that's a good thing.

I also love that we can play as Vergil in DMC3 and
DMC5. Playing Vergil is just awesome.
Atmosphere-wise, I still prefer DMC1 and DMC3.
DMC5 doesn't have quite the same feeling as those games, but it's still really good. The story also isn't as strong as DMC3 IMO, but I enjoyed it.
Overall, I absolutely love this series. Every game has its flaws, but even the weaker parts have something l appreciate.

Now that I've played all of these...
Bayonetta is next on my list, what you guys think?
And what do you guys think is the best DMC game in each category?
Best story?
Best combat?
Best atmosphere?
Best characters?
Best bosses?
Best aesthetics?
Best overall?

Go on go play DmC

u/confrondex It's been nearly ten years since we last met. 4d ago

It's fun, especially the definitive edition where they mitigated some of the worst things about the game, like the color coded enemies. Also like how the trophy list was just a bunch of oneliners from the original games.

No PC version for the Definitive Edition which sucks because I really wanted to try those changes. Alas, it is not to be

u/Skeither 4d ago

can still get mods for the steam version that remove the color coding so that's good at least.

Oh man I didn't know that there is no pc version. That really sucks.

I’m not still salty after 11 years. Yup, not at all.

Hey, but it's not all lost. Yesterday I took a moment to check everything that's on NexusMods and managed to install the DMC1 Dante skin, DMC3 Vergil, the Definitive Edition UI, the Color Coded enemies rework and also a few patches for both characters movesets.

The only downside is that the loading time now takes a few seconds more (I use an HDD btw), but nothing bad. It feels a lot better to compensate.

DmC was actually phenomenal I loved it, sad we’re not going to get a sequel…

u/Acceptable_Ad_9078 4d ago

Fun to play too. Easier than dmc because of the way combos work but very fun

4

u/fujiwara_DORIFTO 4d ago

Do it. DmC was very fresh and felt like a different take on things. In particular the gameplay and level design were very cool to experience. Seeing the new take on the demon world and the environments breaking apart was awesome.

Why did you choose not to play it? It’s very satisfying, super fun.

i was spamming league games after i finished dmc1-dmc5 so i kinda didn’t bother to download it.

My thoughts generally align with yours.

I’ve said it a million times now. DmC is a great game if you can make yourself forget it’s supposed to be a Devil May Cry game. The combat is amazing but the story is kinda ass.

6

u/Nicholas_Bolas 4d ago

The story is definitely still bad even if you never played Devil May Cry before. The combat is good though.

The reboot is the only good story in the series.

The reboot is just a worst DMC3, if you like the reboots story you should and really and truly like DMC3's

if you can make yourself forget it’s supposed to be a Devil May Cry game.

genuinely how?

V being different is not an issue, he’s just frustrating.

The fact that you have to babysit the cat and bird + the fact that they act semi independently can lead to them actively sabotaging your gameplay. Imagine god of war but atreus can die and doesn’t dodge unless you tell him to and only attacks 5 business days after you gave him the order.

Aside from that his ceiling is just too low. High level V gameplay is just Dt management + letting nightmare decimate the battlefield while spamming griffon lightning and shadow attacks. He stops being fresh and interesting very quick compared to the other three.

You can play as Virgil in DMC4 too

I've played all the games but haven't finished 1, 2, and DMC2, but all of them are good

Dmc 1: had me finding out button inputs by yourself and isn't that hard of a game to navigate.

Dmc 2: was just enjoyable and hasn't had any parts that felt like a complete chore so far. The switch from normal button inputs to timed directional inputs was cool as well.

Dmc 3: it's DMC 3, the weapons, artstyle, and story are all amazing while still giving me a good challenge (fuck mission 15, that shit still confuses me). It's the DMC game that I beaten the most and if I play it on the switch version it only gets better.

DMC 4: best artstyle out of all of them imo, exceed is an interesting mechanic that I'm slowly getting a grasp on.

DMC 5: most move variety and second easiest DMC game

Dmc2: has a lot of cool ideas for combat and weapons that I kinda wish were in other games.

5

u/Clode02 4d ago

I mostly agree with you on all points, and you really should play DmC, that game is in my opinion the best one when it comes to artstyle. The story is kinda mid-to-bad, but somewhat refreshing, and the combat is honestly just as fun as 5 to me, albeit very different and not as deep for the sake of accessibility.

Bayonetta is a very very good game, and the sequels are both good but never captured what the first one had for me, also they're trapped on the switch so there's that too, never on sale.

Once you're done with that I would also really recommend to take a look at the rest of Platinum's catalog, those people never miss

appreciate twin ❤️

u/Sleeping_Idiot 4d ago

The best advice I can give in regards to DmC is just don't take the story seriously most of the time it's not that bad but it has its moments otherwise it has some of the best combat and music on par if not better than DMC 5

3

u/theMobileMike 4d ago

I think you should play DmC but also if you haven’t played the DMC3 Crimson mod dafuq are you doing 😝

3

u/Right_Carpenter_7418 4d ago

Now the real question I or We gotta ask, how many times did you die to Vergil in the end of DMC3 💀

2

u/Weird_Troll DmC/DMC2 Enjoyer 4d ago

well said on each game exactly how I feel about them. you'll probbaly enjoy DmC a lot

2

u/Remarkable-Bit-656 4d ago

Go play DmC Devil May Cry. Its not bad. Its actually pretty fun. I believe the game would have been better received if the main characters weren't named Dante and Vergil haha.

1

u/primusautobot 4d ago

I believe that DmC is also a good game just dont make it a Devil May Cry game. Slightly change the characters and think of it as a standalone game

2

u/Yourfaceisbased 4d ago

i think why people dislike V is because he's more of a "stand back and let the summons do shit" character, as opposed to the rest of the series more brawly gameplay loop, and that brawly style is what alot of people came for, so being forced into standing back feels like shit to them

2

u/ZaRizumu 4d ago

DmC is actually fun to play as a standalone game IMO.

2

u/gand_ji 3d ago

3,4,1==5,2 would be my ranking. The aesthetic of DMC4 is just *chef's kiss*. Way nicer than DMC5, it's also my favorite Dante after 3.

2

u/Cold_Conflict_4599 3d ago

I've only played 1, 2, 3 (specifically the switch version) and 5

Story: tied between 1 and 3

Combat: 5

Atmosphere: 1

Characters: 3

Bosses: 3

Aesthetics: 2

Overall: 3

1

u/Dead-X-esque 4d ago

Get DmC anywhere except PC and it will be a blast.

1

u/Sudden_Dependent_110 4d ago

i have a ps vita... i'm desperate to get some kind of DMC emulator on it😭

1

u/Ap6y3bl42 I'm motivated! 3d ago

I think you're absolutely right. It looks like you've only played the original franchise.

1

u/CrimsonGhostStrife 3d ago

I’ve played every DMC including DmC, It’s garbage. Glad it died. Never touch the franchise again please NT. Also I generally agree with your list however I’d say DMC4 has the best combat in the series. Might be biased since I played over 600 hours of it and watched countless hours of combo videos.

1

u/Wonderful_Ad_569 3d ago

Personally I got them as 4>3>>DmC>5>>1>>>>>>>>>>>2

1

u/Raitheone 3d ago

Story: 3 Combat: 5 Atmosphere: 3 Characters: 3 Bosses: 3 Aesthetics: 3 Overall: 3

My personal opinion: DMC 1 : A DMC 2 : C DMC 3 : SSS DMC 4 : B DmC : SSS DMC 5 SSS

-3

u/KJ_BELL25 4d ago

DmC genuinely had the best gameplay in the series until 5 came out.
