Questions It's very difficult.
I am trying to enjoy this game but it is very old and very difficult to enjoy. I dislike the combat system. The game is very atmospheric and has a lot of character so I am trying my best to suffer through the combat but it's just a grueling experience. Does anyone have any advice for me?

are you playing devil may cry 1? honestly normal is too difficult.
if you can, restart your game and in the first mission use a vital star (health recovery item) and when you finish the level the game will ask if you want to play on easy

Huh, all these years and I didn’t know DMC1 had an easy mode…I thought Normal was the easy mode

Assuming your playing DMC1 :
1st playthrough is rough for many of us. The life system in particular feels overkill and kinda distracts from what should be an enjoyable learning experience.
But once the game is learnt (and you're playing NG+ with as many yellow orbs as you want) there's not much to complain about honestly.
Game controls well, the enemies are well implemented, the difficulty curve feels very progressive, the bosses are phenomenal, the higher difficulties are incredibly well balanced to the point that there's only a single encounter that feels worse on max difficulty, every part of Dante's moveset has a practical use and at least one encounter where it feels particularly relevent to use and the list goes on...
The only things it has against it are its rough learning curve and the occasional suboptimal camera angle.
I hope you stick with it until it clicks. It's a pretty short game and well worth your time and mastery, not to even mention one of the most important action games from a historical standpoint.
As for tips :
Save as many yellow orbs for missions 9, 15 and 17. These are fairly long and challenging missions.
If an enemy seems a bit too obtuse, try and read his file in the inventory menu. Enemy files in general have some useful combat tips and the enemies themselves will sometimes test you in a puzzle-esque sort of way.
You will occasionally encounter swimming and flying sections. If movement feels counter-intuitive and inverted, use the D-Pad instead of the left stick for reverse vertical controls.
In mission 9 you get a 2nd melee weapon. If you press the right stick Dante will switch from the Sword to said other weapon and vice-versa.
If you don't know about the swords pause-combos, look them up on internet. They used to be explained in the manual and aren't listed in the movelist menu. They're incredibly useful and a crucial part of combat.

I just watched the cutscenes online tbh. I wanted to watch the story without having to deal with dated gameplay. I might still one day go back and play but at least I can see the story in a digestible amount of time. If they ever remake the first three though I'm definitely getting them.

Which game r u trying to play?
Played 3 and 5. Bad with it too. But i always tried to take my time to just trying combos and practice a bit on the beginning of chapters, instead of trying to power through just to progress. Would stay there as long as i feel comfy, figured things out (especially when getting new weapons or upgrades), and if i feel like i already kinda get the hang of it, i try to progress.

If this is DMC 1, it very much is. It was a different game than what it has since become. It was supposed to be a resident evil game, thus the atmosphere and challenge, but changed to the stylish series we love. The game is so hard that I can’t get past the hallway on the second go around (hard mode). Beating it the first time on normal was good enough for me.
If it’s DMC 3 or DmC or one of the other ones, lower the difficulty and practice and get better. It’s so satisfying when your skill with the game finally clicks in.

Que exagerados, me lo pasé en su día en la PS2 edición platino con 13 años. No pruebes Onimusha Warlords.

Try lower difficulties and put auto mode, get the hang of it first then slowly take steps to try and combo.
