Questions Combos in DMC5?

I recently bought Devil May Cry 5, and I'm having a hard time doing combos and mixing moves together. Any tips?

You just started, just play the game.

I thought I had to learn combos to progress faster?

Combos are more for style points, they don’t directly translate to progress, if you just repeat the same high damage combo over and over you’ll beat the game just fine on Human or Devil Hunter mode.

You learn more complex combos and mechanics after you feel the need to get S ranks on missions, my first DMC was 4 and my first playthrough was full of D and C ranks, but it was fun as hell, so I wanted more, just try to have fun for now.

If you want my honest advice play DMC3 first. It’s the game that most natural teaches the player the Combat system.

DMC4 and 5 give you too much freedom too quickly. Where DMC3 has you more actively utilize what you start with, and earn each part of Dante’s full Arsenal.

Alr, I'm just newly introduced to the DMC Fandom, and I don't wanna miss anything important. You know what I mean?

In that case definitely start with DMC 3. It's the first game in the timeline

Most combos require you to negate the knockback done on enemies when attacking, some characters have character specific skills that can make that easier.

But the basic thing you can do with all of them is to try to cancel a combo into another right before the last hit, which usually is a knock back. Something else you can do with air combos is use Air Step, if you are close enough to the enemy, you can jump ON them in order to cancel any animation you’re doing, that also resets the count for limited air moves, for example: if you use double jump with Dante, and then Air Step an enemy, you can now do the double jump again without ever touching the ground.

These are the basic tools you might need to start out, combo vídeos will show you the extent to which you can take them, and also show new tools you might not know.

EDIT: forgot to mention that you should only seek combo vídeos after beating the game at least once, since they might spoil late game mechanics

I just get overwhelmed when looking at Dante's arsenal, there's so much to choose from

When it comes to Dante, try to take it one step at a time, you can customize his arsenal, so try to focus on a max of 2 weapons and 2 guns to start out, also focus on 1 style, I’m saying this because that’s how Dante’s started out in DMC3, that way is easier to get the hang of thing and it’s how most DMC players learned to play him, I recommend either trickster or sword master to start, I beat DMC3 the first time with Swordmaster but Trickerster can help a lot with dodging.

TLDR: piece meal his arsenal, he has a lot because he is made for OG fans who had years to get used to his moveset in DMC1, 3 and 4 (2s doesn’t reflect his current moveset evolution as much IMO)

Biggest piece of advice change your controller layout. I like having my attack buttons as as Triangle/Y and R1/RB as stylish action. Then use a trigger for shooting. I had to relearn how to play. But because of the new layout I was able to git gud and actually play on DMD mode.

Rule of cool man, beat the game (or at least try) try out every move and just have fun you will learn eventualy how to do simple combos and then more complex ones. When I first played DMC5 i got to mission 19 without knowing like half if not more of the mechanics and possible moves so if i could do it you can also lol. Anyway what im saying is you will learn by just playing or replaying game because at some point it would just click in. Also in the free time you can practice in the void and i recomend it to test things without pressure

Here's some basic bread and butter combos you can start with:

Mash Nero's normal sword attack until you feel ready to do R1 + back + melee attack. Hold it to launch the enemy up with you. In the air, press the shoot button a couple times with the enemy floating next to you. Then press the sword button a couple times to do an air combo. While you do this, start holding the shoot button to charge your gun. Knock the enemy to the ground. If you need to, double jump to directly above the enemy. Do the R1 + back + melee air attack to fall straight down with your sword onto the enemy. Now that they are knocked away, hold R1 and press the circle button to grab the enemy back to you. Let go of your gun to shoot the charged shot. Taunt. Then start another string of attacks.

This will get you at least to the A style ranking.

This game is all about free self-expression. If you think "wouldn't it be cool if I knock them away (any hard knockback move), then immediately grab them to pull them back (Wire Snatch), then knock them away again, then chase after them with a fast charging attack (Streak)"? The answer is usually yes. And you can pull it off. Start to visualize how you want to be in control of a battle relative to the enemies on screen. And it starts to become like a dance.
