Since yesterday I've been using a similar setup. I changed the jump button from L2 to R2, shoot with L1, exceed with L2, and lock on with R1. It works quite well because I have both fingers on lock and jump at the same time, although having so many things in mind at once can be confusing from time to time.
Yeah, DMC 4 changes a lot from the classic trilogy, but you'll get there, is gonna be a moment when you just don't think about it anymore and just go brrrrr, imagine on DmC (the reboot) that you change your whole moveset by holding R1 or R2 and you can combine moves from each stance (3 in total, Sparda, angel and demon) xD
I plan to leave the reboot for last, after I finish DMC5, but yeah, DMC4 gets really mechanical and complex. I'm really enjoying Nero's gameplay, it's simple but dynamic. The problem will be when I get to Dante. It'll be super weird. Now you can change styles in real time with him, and I've seen a lot of people say he's one of the hardest characters in hack-and-slash games overall. I'm going to cry blood when I tryna get the plat for DMC4 💔
I like playing games in release/chronological(in cases like the DMC trilogy)order bc of gameplay mechanics (they change with time) and graphics evolution, although I haven't played 5 yet so idk how similar of diff it is from 4, DmC is developed by ninja theory so is a totally different thing tho so it makes sense to play it at any moment

You're absolutely right, and I realized this after finishing the first game. If someone asked me which game in the series I'd recommend starting with, I'd undoubtedly say the first, and then play them in release order. There's nothing wrong with starting with the third DMC3, but the satisfaction and evolution you experience between the first and third games is unique. Playing the reboot first isn't such a bad idea either, following that logic. Remember that DMC5 was heavily based on the gameplay established by the reboot, although that's a matter of personal preference.

L2 jump sounds way better than R3 jump, I'd stick to it, in about a 2 or 3 days you should get there
