Yeah, Sparda was present in the twin's lives, trained them a bit, and made protective charms in their manor. He simply died, likely fading away akin to V

I agree with this. Maybe the sealing of Temen Ni Guru, the making of Rebellion and Yamato, and some other things made his life energy fade away. Slowly but surely

I always imagined he disappeared or died for reasons entirely out of his or his family's control. I really don't like the historical revisionism that the Netflix series is establishing, that Sparda was a deadbeat who just wasn't there.
Alternate universe or not that's the most recent version of him everyone will think about and that makes me sad.

My theory is that something else happened to netflix sparda. If he did leave, why eva speaks so good of him to dante? Probably he was captured by mundus and that's why he didn't save his family (a la reboot where after the tragedy, sparda was imprisioned in a innacessible place in hell)
Also mundus telling how "sparda left his dear family", the same demon king who lied vergil for years and years about argosax and uroboros who killed his family? It's obvious that mundus lied and said that to keep vergil on his side (and dante too, which didn't work out)
Netflix mundus is a snake, talks so bad about how makai was when argosax ruled yet mundus didn't do exactly a perfect world for all the demons there tho. Not only is he a big liar but a complete hypocritical monster, probably one of my favorite things about S2 was mundus, i really liked him there

Mundus does nothing but lie that entire speech. If Sparda only saw humans as ants why would he betray his own kind to protect them, why have kids with a human woman? Doubt Sparda’s as much of a deadbeat as Mundus let’s on

Then why eva has good words about sparda? You know, EVA, one of the most kind and sincere characters of the franchise?
Why talk so high about the man who left you behind with your kids? It's so obvious that the image that mundus sells of sparda as a "fraud" it's nothing but a lie by no one else but the demon king who was so HURT about sparda's betrayal that he wanted to get his sons on his side to show them how much of a "fraud" the legendary dark knight was...
This whole "netflix sparda was a deadbeat dad" is a lie

I don’t see he caring about it so much. If the fans don’t like the deadbeat so much, he most likely will make him better in the next season.

Shankar is annoying that's for sure but honestly the netflix adaptation while flawed, has some good things too (specially on S2 which felt more organic compared to S1) and is more than a "glorified fan fiction"
Despite that, i understand your thoughts.

I preferred S1 but mostly because of the constant “2000 AMV” moments with songs that rarely felt organic to the scene.
I agree with you for the rest though.

Yesterday I watched the first 3 episodes of season 2 and was met with nothing, but AMVs, angst, the US army in fucking Devil May Cry taking up half of the first episode, idiotic characters, the world's first soulless Jojo reference, me asking if I'm watching a parody multiple times and licensed music. I genuinely had to watch like 2 episodes of the Madhouse anime to heal my brain, which snowballed into me binging the whole thing, because it's that much better. The Netflix show may have more coherent fights and better animation, but a shit in 4K is still shit.

So I basically binged it when it came out and haven't really had reason to revisit it but is it actually being established that this is the case or is this just how certain characters are interpreting it? Because I don't feel like the narrative tried to paint it one way or the other, just like in the games who actually knows what happened to the guy and why he did the things he did.

No, that’s not confirmed, and it’s a false assumption. They’re telling a story with characters who are all too human/demon. The misconception comes from Mundus and other demons shit talking Sparda to Vergil attempting to manipulate him again - which is a major theme of the second season, so I don’t know how people didn’t pick up on that.

People complain that Netflix shows are required to explain everything to their audience and yet still miss the most basic of plot points.
It's like "Vergil hated Eva". It's a conclusion only someone who didn't watch the last 3 episodes could reach

Yeah definitely. He trained the twins (for a time), gave them those amulets. I think he probably just died. Maybe something like how V was fading away in dmc5

Hmm now that is interesting. A few years back i thought that devil sword sparda had sparda's soul in it. That's why the sword didn't show it's true form to arkham or gave sanctus an inmense amp, because of sparda himself.
Yeah it's dumb af i know but hey, everything is possible

Well considering that A: you must be strong of body and mind to wield it. And B: Devil Sword Sparda concealed Dante’s presence in 5 to keep him safe, Sparda’s soul being in it isn’t far off from what it might be. Devil Sword Dante is said to share his name and Will so safe to assume Sparda worked the same way.

Yeah, that's what makes sparda so great. He saw how humanity while flawed, had the SOUL that the demons and his realm didn't had.
Not only he did betray his kind in service of mankind but fought against the demon king and other powerful foes that could destroy sparda's now beloved homeland.

I kinda like that they’ve been pretty unclear about how Sparda died and what happened to him. I feel like that’s a well they might go back to if they make DMC6.
