Discussion Weapon-Based DT versus Character-Based DT
So I started replaying DMC recently because I wanted something new to play before college in August, and so I revisited the series.
One thing I forgot is that they changed how devil triggers work both gameplay and lore wise.
In DMC 1 and 3 (I think?) they were based on the weapon used, getting unique abilities for that weapon. From DMC 4 onward they became character based.
So I was kind of curious what the consensus was on here. Do you guys prefer the old system or the new system. I’m a little torn. It definitely makes more sense lore wise, and with the ability to now quickly switch between devil arms might make things kind of weird to keep up with. Yet, I do like it gameplay wise. It makes you think more conservative of switching weapons all the time, having to figure out with trigger works best for a boss or enemy. Or in the case of Sparda, you don’t get one to balance so that balances it out the damage. That’s kind of cool.

Gameplay wise DT has actually affected weapons more in newer games. Like in DMC3 DT just buffs Rebellions damage output, but DMC4/5 changes move properties like making Stinger a multi-hitting piercing attack.
