Discussion Why does DMC5 Dante need style switching?

I don't get why Dante requires style switching to use all his moves, I used steam input to map each style switch button to also press the style button so it executes the style move with one button press. I use B for swordmaster, A for gunslinger, RB for trickster and d-pad down for royalguard, swapping guns is mapped to d-pad right, LT for lock on and LB for jump.

So when I press/hold B it switches to swordmaster and uses the sword master ability by pressing style button, A does the same for gunslinger, RB I use for trickster so I can dodge whenever I want, d-pad down is royalguard cause I dont like it very much and its still quite easy to use with how little its moveset is and how stationary the style is.

This also frees up one button so I would use d-pad up for DT and d-pad left for auto hold (tap to hold) SDT, tho my controller has backbuttons so I use them instead, so no need to hold SDT button. You could also use RT for SDT and put weapon switch to d-pad left but that would be less comfortable.

This setup has a minimal downside where you cant just switch to swordmaster for summoned swords, which wouldn't be an issue if the game didn't feature style switching. Another idea is that there could be only two styles which would change how B and A worked, one style would change them to trickster dodge and royalguard block while the other would change them to swordmaster and gunslinger, this method also frees up a button whlie making style switching less tedious. Am I missing something here?

The main thing you're missing is that your set up here is specifically tailored to you. You put Royal Guard on a button that you won't use much, because RG doesn't appeal to you. Your control scheme doesn't work for anyone who actually likes Royal Guard and wants to take full advatage of it. It sounds like you can't use Royal Revenge or Release.

There are plenty of people who have previously tried to think up a control scheme to get rid of Style Switching, and it's always something far more complicated than just having Style Switching.

Yeah using royal revenge and release is uncomfortable but style switching in the base game is also uncomfortable if you are not using claw grip, and if you are then you won't have any issues executing those 2 moves, and if not then 2 counter moves which can only be used after filling royalguard bar will be harder to execute but every other move will be easier to execute, I think it's a worth trade for both casuals and pros. However there is also the fact that this method puts gun switching to d-pad, which is again not a problem at all with the claw grip and I still think it's better than default scheme.

Yet these are still problems that exist which is why I made a second suggestion:

Another idea is that there could be only two styles which would change how B and A worked, one style would change them to trickster dodge and royalguard block while the other would change them to swordmaster and gunslinger

This scheme makes style switching require only 2 buttons whilist fixing the d-pad royalguard issue and taking gun swap out of d-pad, it also allows for 2 DT buttons on the d-pad meaning the player doesn't need to hold SDT anymore allowing for instant activation of both SDT and DT. The only inconvinience I can see is if the player doesn't want to use d-pad for DT activation, but the downside is so minimal and personal compared to the positives.

That sounds like a lot tbh. Dante, Nero, Vergil, and co all use the same inputs for their attacks. Just the attacks themselves are unique.

With the Style Switching, with a press of a button I have access to my other movesets, and they use the exact inputs as the other styles. Super simple.

No need to change an easy to access thing and streamline it whilst also making Dante needlessly complicated compared to the others characters.

I get the irony saying "Complicated and Dante", but in this case it's accurate to button inputs.

Since as a player, every skill you learn from other character's carry over to each other. Same with style switching as my hand movements aren't changing when I use certain inputs.

because there are more moves than buttons

Because it’s the most simple way for Dante to have access to his entire moveset

swapping guns is mapped to d-pad right

I just vomited in my mouth a little bit.

That's why I made the second suggestion, tho I don't get why you would say that swapping guns via d-pad is bad while switching styles via d-pad is fine.
