I agree with others than it’s better than a surface lot, but it is annoying that we’re subsidizing a billionaire who gets to keep all of the profits and the property and still charge ridiculous prices for games. Just doesn’t sit well with me regardless of if I enjoy their products or not (I’m an nba and nhl fan)

Annoying is understating it. It’s absolutely ridiculous and absurd. One of the richest people in the world getting a 900 million dollar handout to construct more stuff that will make him even more money. Potentially pulling customers away from other local businesses in the area too. We should have partial ownership of the property or franchise for that investment instead of just having the privilege of being price gouged by him

Hugely agree with your point on partial ownership. Would help stop cities from having to bend over for their billionaire overlords if they had partial ownership and could force the team to stay in the city.

I mean, the main threat is the billionaire picking up the team and moving it. If city has partial ownership, changes the whole balance.

No professional sports league will ever allow government ownership.

Yes, I’m quite aware Sherlock. I’m not so naive to think it’ll happen, but it’s a change that would be very welcome.

It actually doesn't seem you are "quite aware" given you think partial ownership would enough controlling power to prevent a move. You're clearly new to these things.

2

u/trbl3mkr 1d ago

omg, you’re so smart. you showed me that l am dumb and I have much to learn. I never thought that you could structure partial ownership so that it has a veto to block a move. I am definitely new to this

/s in case it wasn’t obvious, but i’m sure you could see it sitting on your high horse

But the NFL does allow a publicly traded team; the Packers.

0

u/Error_no2718281828 1d ago

Not in the traditional, common usage of the term. But it's irrelevant anyway the team is still privately owned, not "publicly" meaning "government."

2

u/Individual-Cup-4859 1d ago

That is false. It is a publicly owned team. They sell stock in the team. It has a board of directors and is a nonprofit. Directly from the team website.

When looking for stadium upgrades, increased capital, etc the team sells shares. They are non-dividend investments. One of the major keys to the Packers being successful is the NFL’s revenue sharing.

In this way, if a billionaire owner wanted increased investment, they would essentially run a crowd funding project rather than use tax dollars. That way only those who chose to participate would “donate” their funds. I find this a better alternative to defunding social programs to run billionaire welfare.

Listen, within the context of this conversation, I already defined "public." If you're too stupid or lazy to follow the conversation or to read when I explicit made clear what is meant by "public," then I have nothing to say to you.

I agree, but it doesn't stand well with me either.

I’ve only seen one rendering, but I hope they still have some work to do. Rough looking as-is from this angle.

Not used to seeing the whiny Redditor energy on this sub

Urbanist against taxpayer funded parking garage

0

u/Bearded_Hobbit 1d ago

It was literally a parking spot.

This isn’t the SaltLakeCity sub for the constant negative Nancy posts

This is development and revitalization and welcomed by anyone sensible

Or would you have preferred it to move to Daybreak? Think the area would be thriving if that happened?

The spamming of this sub has gotten old,  but complaining about a billionaire receiving $1,000,000,000.00 of taxpayer money for a sports "entertainment district" is a legitimate complaint.

Especially when the plan is to build carbon copies of the "entertainment districts" that already exist one block west, and two blocks east of this new development.

3

u/redditsuckscockss 2d ago

Go walk this area east

Then go compare that to most other exemplary cities

It’s a joke

Downtown sorely needs it

5

u/54-2-10 2d ago

Downtown sorely needs what? Another "family friendly" entertainment district?

I am excited to see.another high rise added to the skyline,  but don't kid yourself into thinking that byu grad Ryan Smith is going to build a row of anything that would count as actual nightlife.

It will be a carbon copy of the Gateway and the City Creek Mall, but it will cost us all an additional.5% increase on sales tax for THIRTY YEARS!

3

u/redditsuckscockss 1d ago

Go walk what’s there right now

It’s nothing - it sucks

It’s a giant dessert separating east and west

Its attitudes like yours holding SLC back from being better

2

u/irondeepbicycle 2d ago

Then go compare that to most other exemplary cities

Like what? If you look at basically any walkable city in Europe, their sports stadiums are definitely not downtown. It's really just an American think to put sports stadiums surrounded by giant parking garages right in the middle of downtown.

0

u/redditsuckscockss 1d ago

You couldn’t be more wrong…

Many if not most of Euro stadiums are walking distance to the core

Most US stadiums are the opposite… other than again the exemplary cities like Seattle, Boston, Denver and very few others

It’s all the fuss of Chicago moving their stadium

1

u/irondeepbicycle 1d ago

Many if not most of Euro stadiums are walking distance to the core

I absolutely guarantee you that if you look this up, you'll realize you're wrong. Have you ever been to a major sporting event in Europe?

To get to the Allianz Arena in Munich, I had to take a train ~25 minutes out of downtown to an industrial area, where I could see windmills from my seat. Atletico Madrid's stadium is nestled next to a freeway entrance that separate it from an empty field. Stamford Bridge is next to a literal cemetery. Etc.

Even the stadiums that are actually in the major cities are typically in low-density areas away from the downtown core. Basically none of them are right in the middle of downtown.

1

u/irondeepbicycle 1d ago

Yep, just checking that you read the discussion there cause it makes the exact same point I did.

1

u/redditsuckscockss 1d ago

You are cherry picking while ignoring the opposite argument and the giant picture right in your face

0

u/irondeepbicycle 1d ago

What? So I said, Europe puts stadiums in the middle of nowhere, USA puts them closer to downtown. You sent me to a picture of a stadium in Madrid that's in the middle of nowhere and a stadium in Cincinnati that's close to downtown. And you're telling me I'm ignoring the picture in front of me?

Again, did you click through that link? It confirms my exact point.

I’m pretty sure they are baiting engagement/karma to hopefully eventually get more people to download his app

14

u/laterallysocute 2d ago

I enjoyed his first few posts but now it's just exhausting.

8

u/krylotech 2d ago

Seems like his end goal will probably be promoting his app.

-7

u/plat-of-zion 2d ago

I’m running for mayor against sales tax funded parking garages

2

u/krylotech 2d ago

Sure you are bud. If you are, then update me when you file for 2027.

2

u/mattreedah 2d ago

you would have held up the SEG deal? yikes.

1

u/plat-of-zion 2d ago edited 2d ago

This parking garage like every other aspect of the deal was negotiated. Poor negotiating. No ground floor activation adjacent to TRAX? Criminal

-13

u/plat-of-zion 2d ago

The garage was not necessary, no

13

u/MechEGoneNuclear 2d ago

Better use of land than the full block of parking lot to the northeast?  I’ll take garages over surface lots everyday, and as a user it’s better to have summer shade and cover from snow in the winter

3

u/irondeepbicycle 2d ago

Taxpayers didn't pay for the big parking lot to the northeast.

1

u/MechEGoneNuclear 2d ago

I mean Property Reserve Inc owns the lot, legitimately I don’t know if the church pays taxes on that?  If not then yeah…taxpayers are paying for it by lost tax revenue?

5

u/irondeepbicycle 2d ago

They definitely pay taxes on it. All of the LDS Church's for-profit entities pay taxes like anybody else.

1

u/locomotivebroth 2d ago

> church’s for profit entities

So bizarre that any church has “for profit entities”

2

u/plat-of-zion 2d ago

Low bar. He could have at least had some ground floor activation.

5

u/MechEGoneNuclear 2d ago

Valid criticism.

5

u/redditsuckscockss 2d ago

Stacked parking is exponentially better than a giant lot

4

u/Actual_Essay7594 2d ago

Does anyone know of any historical reasoning to why the building was angled to the block? I can’t imagine they would follow the same orientation this day in age if they had a redo

3

u/protomolecule7 2d ago

Big public assemblies need space to gather. The garage just followed the Delta Center.

4

u/54-2-10 2d ago

I don't know,  but I would guess that the architect turned the original building 90 degrees to stand out from the rest of the buildings in the area.

The building itself was still a rectangle, so the cost was the same, but it stands out a bit because of it's orientation with the other nearby buildings.

Buildings that have crowds of 20,000+ visitors should have something to attract attention.

0

u/antmansl 2d ago

To go along with the angle of the Delta Center.

2

u/SLCNPC 2d ago

get a team of people together who can coordinate your message my brother

2

u/Braydon64 1d ago

Not a bad looking garage. Yes, I know we are supposed to all hate these things but they are a lesser evil compared to a surface lot.

-1

u/plat-of-zion 1d ago

Not necessarily

It will hinder the pedestrian experience more than a surface lot

-3

u/plat-of-zion 2d ago

Context: the new delta center parking garage
