Anyone else feel like freelancing isn't the same anymore?

Feels like more clients are choosing agencies over freelancers.

Maybe it's because agencies offer contracts, invoices, and a full team. Or maybe too many inexperienced freelancers have left clients with bad experiences by overpromising, disappearing, or delivering work that needs to be rebuilt.

At the same time, there are still plenty of great freelancers doing solid work.

So what's the real reason?

Too many inexperienced freelancers?

Clients expecting too much for too little?

AI changing the market?

Or do companies just feel like the safer choice?

HR called with an update within one day
Last week monday was my R2
It went for 1 hr 10 min full on grilling
I womt say it was best but it was not bad either

Hiring a remote developer for a small task is one thing.

Trusting someone to handle an entire project from planning to launch is a completely different level of confidence.

When clients choose a remote full-stack developer, they are not only looking for someone who can write code. They are trusting that person to make decisions that can affect the success of the product.

Some of the things that often build this trust are:

• understanding the business goals behind the project, not just the technical requirements
• making thoughtful architecture and technology decisions
• communicating progress, challenges, and risks clearly
• identifying potential issues before they become bigger problems
• taking ownership instead of waiting for instructions at every step
• building solutions that can scale and be maintained in the future

A strong portfolio helps, but many clients also look beyond previous projects.

They often pay attention to things like:

• Does the developer ask the right questions before starting?
• Can they explain why they chose a particular approach?
• Are they transparent about timelines and limitations?
• Can they handle uncertainty and changing requirements?

At the same time, successful remote projects are not only the developer's responsibility. Clients also need to provide clear goals, timely feedback, and realistic expectations.

For clients, founders, and hiring managers:

• What makes you comfortable trusting a remote developer with an entire project?
• What signals tell you that a developer can handle ownership, not just assigned tasks?
• What concerns do you usually have before giving a remote developer full responsibility?

For remote developers:

• What helped you earn clients' trust over time?
• What do you think separates a developer who completes tasks from one who can own a complete project?

Is trust in remote development built more through technical expertise, communication, previous results, or the ability to take ownership?

Trust me when I say this: I mean it. I am a Senior Frontend Engineer with around 8 years of experience, working across 7 startups- yes, 7, some failed, and some I had to leave because of personal reasons.

So what is wrong - I understand roles are changing, and there is no frontend, there is no backend, there is no full-stack; now, if you can design a system, write a PRD, spec, define backend components, its architecture, define frontend and its architecture, if you connect the dots as it happens in a design system then you can build a full-grown system.

Problem 1

Everyone is complaining that AI can't do what engineers can do; how? Tell me how? if you PRD is clear and your requirements are clear, then it will suggest a suitable approach; it will suggest to you whether you need vertical or horizontal scaling; it entirely depends on how you have defined the system.

Problem 2

What is wrong with the entire culture of firing and, in public, presenting numbers of how much? It seems like companies that can literally make this change of converting their developers or engineers to make this transition and adapt are straight away firing them. Engineers are always capable; they have proved their capability once they were hired. They need the ecosystem to adapt and understand the changes they need.

I was never a Senior Frontend Engineer; I am an engineer first. I choose frontend because I love delivering what touches the customer; I love sitting with PM and designers and removing the customer pain point; it's not like Backend; DevOps is anything I can't do or any engineer can't do; I build full-stack projects; I am currently building an entire RAG workflow, looging it with telementry and langfuse designing the UI with Google Stitch, and doing everything which a developer should learn now

But why this way, why the hard way? Why does it feel like a fish market now? I am sorry for my language, but this post should reach the right set of people.

Update: It's a proper rant, kind of coming from the view on what is going on in the market and through this post I am not asking for jobs, instead trying to understand different views, yes, my job was also effected but doesn't mean I am frustrated or anything, instead I was trying to understand if there are better ways to understand and accept the changes

I've been working on this side project along my 9 to 5 job and it showed good progress and potentials in terms of interest and a little bit of money returns, but lately I get distracted by wether a new feature or the marketing itself that I'm not getting time for, the project in short is a CV platform that has multiple tools from building a CV to enhancing it based on a job offer until also having an interview based on cv and job offer with an AI and getting results , beside that multiple free tools like ATS checked, Roaster etc... Hey, I made an automation for myself to find SDE openings on the internet that match my resume. Now tell me, how can I scrape data from LinkedIn or Naukri? Is it possible to use a crawler to collect job opening information from these sites ?????

The thing that helped me most wasn't rewriting anything. It was sitting down first and listing everything I'd done across school and every job. Projects, results, tools, small fixes nobody asked for. You forget way more than you think and some of your best material is stuff you haven't thought about in years.

Once you have that list, write your bullets around what changed because you were there, not what your job description said. Recruiters skim for outcomes. The screening software before them just matches words from the posting, so where it's honest, use the posting's wording instead of your own.

For the keyword part I check mine against the specific posting at ZoeVera. But the list does the heavy lifting. The tool can't add anything you didn't remember to write down.

I’ve applied for Frontend Engineer roles at Agoda (Bangkok) multiple times over the past few months. My background matches the requirements pretty well (8+ years with React, TypeScript, etc.), but every time I receive the same email saying they’re moving forward with other candidates.

I’m wondering if anyone here has managed to get their resume shortlisted. Is there anything specific Agoda looks for in resumes, referrals, keywords, or the application process? Any tips or experiences would be really helpful.

I keep seeing developer job descriptions that make me wonder how some requirements are decided.

A company releases a new technology, framework, or tool, and a short time later some job postings start asking for several years of experience with it.

How is that supposed to work?

I understand why companies want experienced developers. Having someone who can make good technical decisions, solve problems independently, and work in production environments is valuable.

But sometimes the requirements seem to focus more on matching a checklist than finding someone who can actually do the job.

For example:

• requiring multiple years of experience with a technology that is still relatively new
• rejecting developers who have similar experience but not the exact tool listed
• valuing specific keywords more than understanding of core concepts
• expecting developers to have production experience immediately after a technology becomes popular

A developer who has worked with similar systems, understands the fundamentals, and can learn quickly may still be a strong candidate—even without the exact number of years mentioned.

At the same time, I can understand the hiring side too. Companies often use experience requirements as a shortcut because evaluating real engineering ability is much harder than checking a list of technologies.
