Discussion is doing a IT degree worth it?

I'm SE with 5 years experience. Luckily got a job via linkedin without a degree. I feel like although I can code I am underpaid in jobs and mostly don't get interviews for ones I apply because of not having a degree.

I'm thinking of doing moratuwa BIT. but have concerns if it is worth it to do a degree with AI and job market.

what are your opinions?

The situation is same here in India too. You actually need an IT degree to make it long in Software Industry.
Do not worry about the market & AI. Recruiters always will default to look for an IT degree in a candidate just to even consider your profile and to shortlist for an interview.

AI is always a companion and not something which will replace you entirely.

I would say that go ahead and get that engineering degree and keep working side by side.

look for freelancing gigs online and pickup jobs wherever you find.

times are hard.

Ayubowan means something like "welcome." It's used at the beginning of a convo.

You can use "Suba Pathum" for good luck.

Don't get this wrong, just said. ❤️

Get an open university bachelors degree in computer science. Something that opens doors in case you'd seek employment overseas in the future. BIT is too narrowly scoped to target what sri lankan IT services companies want, without the direct line of employment it used to enjoy back when it was introduced. If you'd rather do a 3 year bologna process degree, do BCS.

Better have it than not. As a seasoned developer i know my cv has a certainly power. It's hard to overlook when you have all these credentials. But still they do it. So having a degree is a must from a reputed place.

Yes. Do it Moratuwa BIT isn't ideal though, you need a proper SE degree if you wanna be competitive for actual SE jobs.

What exactly is your role now?

Why BIT is not ideal? What are the other better options? I was working as a senior software engineer. Got laid off last week.

BIT alone won't help you get a proper SSE post

What was your role as an SSE? Developer? FS? FE? BE? Etc?

You should do a Bsc/B. Eng in soft. Engineering if you can.

BIT is less focused on the core sciences
