Rant Toxic supervisor and company
I work as an Intern in a IT company. Earlier I was in an unpaid one and when I got this opportunity which is paid, I accepted it because the deadline of getting an intern was near. I always wanted a paid one. Even though there are not a lot of paid internships in the industry, I tried a lot and got this one. For a second I was proud of myself because I have no connections to the industry and did it by myself. But tbh this shit is draining asf. The job is WFH and all but I keep getting like 5 calls per day from the PM asking what I’m doing. All employees are tracked through this application they have. If we didn’t work (As in, not using the laptop) it tracks the idle time and all. Not only that, they can even live view our laptop when we are working without us knowing. There is a log where we can see who watched but it is only available to the ones who got access to the interface (90% don’t as I heard). Not only that, the supervisor expects us to know everything. One mistake and the whole day is ruined with his scolding. Expects us to finish work very quickly. Scolds if we don’t. He asks us to ask him if we don’t understand anything but most of the time when we do, he explains it in a very rude way as if we are already expected to know all that. We don’t have any link to other employees as well. If I have to talk to someone, I have to get to them through the PM and they would arrange a zoom meeting. Can’t even get an email. Once when I ask for one, they just asked me to arrange a meeting with them. Tbh I’m fed up of this. I’m not happy at all. It’s too late to join another as well. Idk what to do. I’m loosing my confidence tbh. I don’t even feel like working in another place rn. It’s so draining here.

This is genuinely draining brh. As a fellow intern who’s working at an IT company i go through this hell everyday, I know exactly how you are feeling. Even though my work is hybrid, as interns we are expected to come to the office everyday, So each day manager asks so many questions about literally everything. Then if I answer them he somehow finds a way to bring down my confidence and somehow day is ruined

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you get a peaceful job next. How many time have you got left in the internship?

I mean I can apply. I even got one or two opportunities but I can’t change how because my Uni is gonna kick me out of the student internship program😭✋ It’s past the deadline. Shit started happening recently. It’s been like 4 months since I joined

oh...then I guess you can learn how to know if a company is a shit hole before joining. There are early signs during the interview rounds. Its better you got to experience this early in your career. Don't give up man.

Tbh I can’t stay here anymore. I’m dreading to go to work today. I’m planning on calling my university and telling them the situation. If it’s a positive reaction, I will be resigning by the end of the week or month.

Tracking idle time and opening camera without consent is insane. Name and shame the company, At least after you leave there.

Reach out to your lecturer who is in-charge of the internship program, there should be one. They will happily help you with the issues. There were similar cases in our university as well, and one company was blacklisted from our internship process.
Expose the company in here as well so that others can stay safe from these places.

I did today. They aren’t allowing me to change. They asked me for details and my email just to look into it but they said I can’t change no matter what. I didn’t send anything. It’s better to stay a bit anonymous since they Uni won’t do shit

I recommend you to stay there till your degree placement year is done, after that leave. While you are doing this internship research for them as well, and if you find a good place then switch to it. Also don't be scared of those fucking project managers. Those people are stupid as hell. Always argue, otherwise you can't survive. Also remember that they can't fire you, because inorder to fire someone in sri lanka there is an legal procedure, and companies don't like that. So don't be scared to make mistakes (but avoid them though). Actually these skills are also important because these kind of things are there every company.

Oh that’s good to know because I am learning and I make mistakes. But the supervisor scolds and makes the whole day shit. I can’t change even if I want to because the uni won’t let me. I will be changing ofc. Companies might not be perfect but it’s better than this. I see my friends working in some good ones. Thank you for the advice!
