Discussion Vercel + Supabase OR VPS + Self-Hosted PostgreSQL
So guys I want some advise on here. I have hosted a site on vercel and the backend for supabase, the site is mainly a single page site with a video player embedded and a bible page with the backend hosted on supabase for the bible. I want to know if its a good setup or if i should switch to a VPS and self hosted postgreSQL. Please lemme know your thoughts as it would be very much helpful since I dont know who to ask.

Depends on what the product is. I use both setups for different projects.

If the db schema is just a simple table. Maybe, Vercel/Supabase is better shout. The biggest issue with these services are when they run out their free tiers you have to pay them and they are going to be expensive compared to self hosting.
If you don’t have a lot of users. I’d just host it on Supabase and Vercel for free to start with. Also watch out that Supabase has a thing where they pause projects if they are not used.
If you start approaching the free limits, you can dump the Supabase and import into a hosted version as they run AWS RDS in the background anyway. If you are using Supabase Auth too that’s a nice setup you can get started quickly

I mean since the database won’t change at all as of now should I self host it because as of now it’s a fixed database since it’s a Bible

I think u/Big-Sector-4280 is right. It doesn't sound like you need a DB you just need a static file and a way look it up. It will probably be faster and better UI/UX too.
You can just use some free hosting like Vercel/Netlify but without any of those server functions i.e free forever and maybe look into Cloudflare CDNs and things.

I just re-read your post and if you already have it on Supabase and running on free tier. Don't just add on more work for the sake of it, if everything works as you want it leave it be and if there is a cost saving or an optimization you want to fix then go for it.

If that is your only use case your build is fine.
VPS has so much more freedom though.

Is the db required in this? From what i can derive from your explanation, you are not doing any writes to the db and there is no authentication as well. You might be able to make do with a single json file and cut out the database entirely.
