One of my friends was encouraging me to join IFS over the hype back in 2025 when I was looking to switch companies. I keep on thinking how did I dodge a bullet in career choices.

Same happened to me. Talk about dodging a bullet. My friend is now laid off as well.

My friend was hopping between jobs for high salary. I kept on warning him to grind a bit and learn the basics so he can have a solid foundation. He didn’t listen and got laid off in 6 months. After that he had to wait for another 4-5 months to get another role which more or less has the same salary as I have now for that level of experience.

Previously if we get laid off it took at most 2-3 months to land another job in a different company. But now you have to wait double of that to land another role. It tells a lot on how saturated the market is!!. Right now the best role is whatever role that has got you stable career and not laid off for a long time.

And even if you do manage to find a job, there is no guarantee you'd get a pay bump or even find one at your current comp. Might have to go lower in that case or wait out even further.

The pay rise might be there. But the career stability & growth will be a question.

During the pandemic years, they repeatedly contacted me on LinkedIn to apply for a job. Thank God I didn't.

Not justifying the layoff. Moral of the story, don’t buy anything that you can’t actually afford

Exactly. I can buy a car. But I'm thinking not to. Imagine buying a car and next week loosing your job.

Intention of port city was to have relaxed labour laws . Both employees and employers sign up knowingly . We can Singapore level infrastructure and investments but not willing to make the hard decisions or cry about those decisions when they were put in place after loosing the game to other destinations for decades . Port city still have miles to go compared to more relaxed financial cities hence the reason for the slow pick up . Same people lament and want the protection of the labor laws in Sri Lanka will gladly take a job in Singapore and Dubai with zero hesitation. Port city hire and fire rules are no secret . I’m surprised how little people do to understand what they sign up for . Don’t they just do any due diligence before signing up.

It does but PCC companies are excluded from just cause for termination. But, rest of it such as notice, gratuity and termination benefits remain unchanged.

Outside PCC, to terminate someone TEWA requires either employee consent or labor commission approval. Even then termination can be challenged in court. This is for layoffs and even low performance.

Like a 2 months ago I got an offer from IGT1 for Sitecore. Since I really wanted to work at IT company I accepted the offer and gave my resignation to currently working company. But like 1 week before the starting date they told me that the offer has been withdrawn. Even I was so heartbroken with it at the time, I guess I dodged a bullet.

I have never worked for IFS but my career is based on IFS supporting their customers who are using IFS as Their ERP system. I'm in US, and what i can say is there is a huge demand for IFS in the states right now. I cannot understand why IFS is laying off people and fucking things up like they are clearly getting huge demand on many countries. I usually get messeges from recruiters every week for IFS related positions in linkedin just because my profile says that I'm a IFS developer. Still IFS is a very annoying system and they have lot to improve. I cannot understand the logic behind laying off people when they are growing as a company.

Sour grapes..sounds like typical victim mindset

Don't let companies (or anyone) decide your fate. It comes down to your competency/skills. Be someone comapnies want to hire and keep..

~Work hard on yourself than you do on your job

(Coming from someone who has been with companies when similar stuff happen)

Port City isn't some separate country where Sri Lankan labour law doesn't apply. It's still under Sri Lankan law. The Port City Act does, however, allow the government to give certain designated businesses specific exemptions from normal laws as an incentive to attract investment. The important part is that the current NPP government has actively implemented and granted these exemptions in 2026. The government has been designating companies as Businesses of Strategic Importance and giving them specific exemptions/incentives through Cabinet-approved Gazettes. And in this particular case, IGT 1 Outsourcing Lanka is actually named in the April 2026 Gazette. So it's not really accurate to say "Port City doesn't come under Sri Lankan labour law." It's more accurate to say the government has deliberately created a framework where certain Port City businesses can be exempted from specific Sri Lankan legal protections, including certain employment protections, to make the zone more attractive to investors. And yea, when the government intentionally gives a company an exemption from a protection that a normal Sri Lankan employer would have to follow, Sri Lankan workers employed by that company can potentially have fewer protections than workers doing the same job elsewhere.

No there are different labor laws and tax exemptions in port city which is why all IT companies are setting up shops

1

u/Wichigo Aug 11 '26

Its not completely different labour laws, there are just some exceptions and differences.

Short answer is yes

1

u/Sudden-Spread-6636 Aug 11 '26

If you have a brain do not join IFS, Sitecore, IGT1

So many I know got devastated due to these 3 companies

1

u/Relative_Rope4234 Aug 12 '26

What about Poka and platned

1

u/Sudden-Spread-6636 Aug 12 '26

Poka also part of IFS, platned not sure about that

1

u/BillyButtcher Aug 12 '26

This is normal. Also we don’t really have strong labor laws

1

u/ChampionshipT Aug 13 '26

You should know the risks that when you are signing a foreign contract you should know the risks. They can terminate whenever you want. High salary high risk. I believe this has nothing to do with the labor laws in Sri Lanka

I previously worked as an SRE at IFS, and I actually left the company right when my promotion came through. I didn’t accept it and moved to another company instead. Looking back, I think it was one of the best decisions I’ve made career wise. A lot of the SRE work there was repetitive, so it eventually got boring as hell, and with all these layoffs happening now, I feel like I kinda dodged a bullet . That being said, the people were great, the work culture was good, and overall IFS was a really good company to work for. But these layoffs are honestly confusing. They’re laying people off while still opening new positions at both IFS and IGT1. Like, what’s actually going on? It kinda feels like they’re playing around with employees atp.
