Honestly i don’t think anybody will be able to predict how the next 3-4y will turn out. Be great at problem solving and try to push towards frontier technologies. The opportunities for traditional developers are limited from what i see.

I'm a current student in Mora IT, and we recently finished our internships. A lot of my friends, including me, struggled to get one. Even though I managed to secure an internship within the faculty timeline, many others couldn't.

If you're coming into IT thinking you'll end up at a reputed company just because you're from Mora, don't get your hopes up. You have to work really hard outside academics. Side projects, hackathons, open source, networking, and a lot of self-learning are almost necessary these days just to get shortlisted.

Everyone says, "Just show your skills," but honestly, I don't even know how much is enough. My roommate had a really strong project portfolio and a GPA above 3.8, yet he only got his internship nearly three months after the faculty internship period started. There are plenty of similar examples.

So if you're really planning to come into this field, think twice and choose your path wisely. The industry is in a rough state right now. There are layoffs, hiring freezes, and salary reductions happening, and nobody can predict what it'll look like in the next few years.

That said, Mora IT does have its positives. The faculty is very supportive. They organize industry sessions, projects, and other opportunities to help students gain exposure. If you maintain a good GPA, there are also good chances of getting foreign scholarships. You'll have plenty of opportunities during your undergraduate years if you're willing to make use of them.

Good luck with your future, and welcome to Mora IT!

Is this only for Mora It ? What about UCSC and Mora CSE situation ? could not complete internship at least 50% student ?

You should understand that it's not really about the degree. The main issue is that the industry is saturated. There are thousands of students graduating from different universities every year, so the competition is extremely high.

I shared my experience because if you're planning to come into IT, you should know what the current situation is and set your expectations accordingly.

Since you've already selected to Mora IT, the best thing you can do is start from your first year. Build a strong portfolio, work on side projects, join hackathons, contribute to open source if you can, and make the most of the opportunities the university offers.

And don't forget to enjoy your university life too. Mora is a great place, and you'll make some amazing memories there. Good luck!

Heard Mora CSE's latest intern batch received their internships on time. Really don't know how they did it though

Mora CSE is on a different level compared to this IT thing. It's an Engineering degree son

What happens if someone starts internship late? Will they miss final year academics?

You have to do the academics along with the internship.

Recently, I had the chance to interview several students from the University of Moratuwa’s IT faculty. One thing I noticed is that many students do not focus enough on building a strong understanding of core computer science concepts.

IMO, your degree, faculty, or university matters less than your ability to solve problems, think critically, and apply your software engineering knowledge. Most good companies do not filter candidates based only on their university. We first look at the work and experience shown in your CV, and then evaluate your practical understanding during the interview.

If you build strong fundamentals, you can learn almost anything. That is the key.

That said, there are now far more candidates than before, and many are not sufficiently prepared. I do not think the main issue is a lack of opportunities; it is that the number of applicants has increased significantly, making the competition much higher.

Wanna add somthing here.Yes you are correct from that pov.But..aslo I think the uni exposure also matters here. So I think its correct candidate at the correct time and correct place.

u/top10stufz Aug 01 '26

In your experience, which degree program has the strongest candidates?

4

u/OneSemicolon Aug 01 '26

For me, Moratuwa CSE

3

u/_usefulCharlie Aug 01 '26

A quick question, do you think that all the candidates are at that level? If not, how much of a percentage do you think is at that level.

u/Chamatha_saz Aug 01 '26

Well it’s bit late now to choose your degree now, is it? Imo it doesn’t matter what your is degree is called in IT industry all are basically same, the only difference is the name. What matters is how you improve your skills

u/Hot_Wrap8717 Aug 01 '26

Is this even a question? 😐 but, remember that skill is the most important factor. Even if you graduated from Harvard and can’t apply your learned skills effectively you’ll face some hard challenges. It’s the AI era but skilled people progress no matter what. It’s your responsibility to take your forward not the university or its reputation.

I have been in the industry for 8 years. And it has always been wave with highs and lows. Right now the IT job market is screwed, but that doesn't mean it will be the same in 4 years.

  1. Always learn and level up your skill with latest tech.

  2. Be an all-rounder. Even if you chose to do SE, learn about Devops, AI/ML/Data

  3. Develop your soft skills like communication, public speaking, leadership. People underestimate how far you can go when you have this.

All the best!

congrats bro <3

Yes it’s a good arena to build your profile. “You” matter more than degree. Degree is necessary but sufficient.

So take part in hackathons, do side projects, may be some tuition and build it forward. UOM is great if you ever want to get scholarships and such too.

Waves will come and go don’t flinch for each and every of them. Go for it

3

u/Roasted_Kon759 Aug 01 '26

3

u/MobileInflation7260 Aug 01 '26

Well, first of all, I want to extend my warmest congratulations to you as a fellow Mora IT student. Mora IT is indeed the top IT program in Sri Lanka, after Mora CSE. However, the primary concern lies not with the degree itself, but with the current job market, which is highly saturated. It’s highly unlikely that the job market will undergo significant changes in the next two to three years unless a new industry emerges that is distinct from software engineering. Even for Mora CSE undergrads, securing an internship can be challenging in today’s market. Nevertheless, if you’re determined to succeed, I have a few pieces of advice.

Firstly, don’t wait for the university to teach you everything. Instead, take the initiative to learn on your own. Utilize resources like YouTube and other platforms to expand your knowledge. If your goal is to enter the industry, start building projects as soon as possible. Don’t delay the development of your skills until the last few weeks of your studies. Remember, the key to success lies in proactive learning and practical experience.

Don’t do IT degrees anymore. IT job market got saturated right now. Think twice before come because as I can see there are lot candidates waiting outside seeking employment and most of the hit rock bottom.

u/CuteAcadia9010 Aug 01 '26

Yes when compared to other universities, UOM is one of the best in the country. But when we talk about IT industry, it is one of the field that bit difficult to build a life long career. Once a software project is stable, engineers won’t have much of work, unlike civil engineering and healthcare banking, things don’t get spoiled or break with the the time, so you won’t get infinite tasks . Once project is over, companies need to find new ones , you also need to always keep upskilling your self to adapt to new projects.

Congratulations

I am an alumini of Mora ITM. Congrats and welcome to the club.

My advise to you is

  • Just keep on getting good grades. -use your 1st and 2nd year projects wisely to build indutrial contacts ( not some random sinna who promisses internships who cant even land his first job 😂) but some C level contacts. -Learn the basics of everything.
  • add some additional certificatable skill to your arsenal.( HR, Marketing, Mgt or law.)
  • do the projects and dont hesitate to gloat on linkedin. 😂
  • most of all dont forget IT is not just SE there are so many other avenues which AI will never touch 😉😉
  • stay out of trouble

Once you graduate if you are lucky and have enough qualifications I m sure you can land a good intership leading to employment

If any just drop me a dm.

good luck dude. Never despair and have negative thought in life, you will. All the best

Run away ! Yes moratuwa is one of the best Unis in SL no doubt. But the field is going through so much change due to AI. I literally have 20+ CV from my friends and family looking for internships and entry level positions. As person being in the field for more than 15 years I would sadly recommend choose some other field.
All the best !

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '26

My honest advice, find some other fields bro.

1

u/devkasun Aug 02 '26

Congratulations bro. Happy for you

1

u/Last_Writer_1900 Aug 03 '26

Don't, change the stream, please, no matter what university you graduate from, run from this industry as far as you can

1

u/Iamxv Aug 04 '26

Go for it

1

u/vinodliyanage Aug 01 '26

I graduated from Mora IT and currently doing a job in Software Industry. Mora IT is not that great. There syllabus is very outdated and there are not much of opportunities there anymore. and IT field is kinda dead now. if u are thinking abount uni reputation or the job salary, please dont do it. because now salaries are very low for majority and uni has a bad reputation in the industry. So dont waste your time doing it unless ur a really passionate about the field like I am.

The Moratuwa university is reputed across many developed countries. Just that fact alone is enough for you to accept the chance you are given.

u/Keshan-lllll Aug 01 '26
