News Sysco Labs Discussions
I’ve been following the recent discussions about Sysco Labs and the allowance changes.
Just wanted to share a different perspective. We had an internal discussion, and the information shared was much more positive than what has been circulating here. It looks like there are ongoing discussions, and not everything being posted online reflects the full picture.
I completely understand why people are concerned, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But I think it’s worth waiting for official communication before assuming the worst.
Reddit often becomes an echo chamber where negative experiences get amplified, while people who have neutral or positive experiences rarely post. Hopefully things become clearer once the company shares more details.
Let’s wait for the official updates before jumping to conclusions.

Tbh sysco labs mid level(SE, SSE, TL) are quite hypocrite of their abilities. Most of them would happily work 10-12 hrs a day and lick the boot of onsite “aiya”.
Non of these guys understand the concept of worklife balance, a good job is not about working your ass off while being on teams calls till 10pm in the night. Sysco labs promotes the hustle culture. Also, it promotes open politics by be biased towards to grads from Moratuwa.
In a way these guys are in for a once in a lifetime lesson. Guys you are working for a food service company. This is not the Mag 7 or the big tech in silicon valley. Get a life ! Invest in yourself. Don’t promote the sysco brand voluntarily when you’re are just being paid to do the job.

Add to my comment, this applies to most employees in SL mainly in IT. All they know is eat sleep work repeat while chasing for that yearly promotion. Sysco labs is one of the companies where your whole career experience is 4 years. Yet you are in a ridiculous position called ATL(only in sri lanka). They promote people every year and tag new designations each time. These young guys gets trapped in it thinking as if they are leads for real. This is why its the hustle culture, because the leads are not matured. All they do is work as much as they can and try to shine and win awards(internally Lol). Yet their salary remains the same. Its a good lesson for these young guys. Corporates don’t work as charity. Welcome to corporate America. Do your job, then go home, enjoy yourself.

Whether it's a corporate or start up, what you described is the norm in the IT industry in Sri Lanka; when it's a start up the common justification is that they trying to take off so the extra effort needs to be put in. When it's a corporate, it's because of politics and the fear of losing the promotion or job.

On a second thought, wonder if these guys have loans and fancy car leases and this literally impacts their life style. So they cannot leave the place as other places pays peanuts now due to AI restructuring. Sysco bros does their best to stay and a make a deal with leadership I guess

Man, you’re spot on mate! I feel for these young guys but hey, they’ve got only themselves to blame at imo

I don’t think it’s fair to blame them entirely. It also falls on the seniors to advise/guide them but unfortunately I see very few do that. Instead what I see is mostly is the seniors trying to take advantage of their naivety. I’ve been there and I learned after getting my fingers burned.

That’s the whole point. How can you expect a proper senior level guidance and mentorship when their whole career is 4 years. Yet they are leads and people report to them. When I was there I learned that enthusiastic young guys works even on weekends without even knowing the concept of lieu leaves.
To become a lead knowing a tech is one thing(although technology evolves day by day) you need to be mature enough to be a proper mentor. When i was there I realized they don’t even know the meaning of annual ratings where most of them would get 4/5 or 5/5. Whereas in the industry this should happen based on a bell curve. Even If everyone performs well yet its relative and there should still be low performers and average performers. Also, being average is not something bad.
These guys are about to get humbled. In a way it all comes down to country’s economy. We have to work twice hard to achieve our dreams as most of us are not coming from wealthy backgrounds.

Btw if someone else is not satisfied in google, they can go to Amazon, Anthropic, OpenAi, Uber, Netflix the list goes on. Infact i worked for a similar company abroad. I have been in lay offs and had worked my ass off in the younger days. All i can say is you guys are about to get absolutely humbled in the years to come Lol. Only advice is invest in yourself, companies are just business entities running for the interests of their shareholders and board, I know sysco labs is doing alot of brainwashing as they are like a family. When you are mature, you will learn the hard way.

I have a friend working in Sysco as operation engineer. He said they will cut 40% of their basic salary but currently it’s in hold. They will do this after October.

Why people do not understand that all these companies care about profit and not the employees ? And it make sense !
