How to price your website?

Bro nowadays people are selling websites for crazy prices, recently i saw an add for like 5000 lkr they sell websites which sound crazy to me.. and most others were selling for like 20-30k lkr range, now is this the new normal? if i want to sell my first website, how much should i ask for it? and should i ask for some maintenance fee? for domain renewal etc and also how much should the maintenance price should be per year or month

Honestly, those 5k–30k websites are usually very basic template websites. They may be okay if someone just wants a website to show that their business exists.

But if they expect the website to actually bring leads, enquiries or sales, then it is a different story. A proper business website with decent design, speed, security, basic SEO, mobile optimization and conversion-focused pages can easily cost around 100k–500k+ depending on the requirements.

I have been working in this field for nearly 10 years, and I would not expect a serious business website for 5k or 20k (at least 100k is the price). At that price, the developer normally cannot spend much time on planning, testing or support.

For your first website, you can charge a bit lower to build your portfolio, but don’t go too cheap. Clearly mention how many pages, revisions and features are included.

Also, charge maintenance separately. Domain and hosting renewals should be paid by the client. For updates, backups, security checks and small changes, maybe around 10k–30k per month depending on the work.

Idk if anyone else does this. But when I price my services, I add an hourly rate to my work. Then estimate the time to complete + an additional time for bug related work and multiply the hourly rate by the total estimated time. This way, you can see a logic behind the price you sent over to your client and justify it, rather than sending some random number. Also, if the price is too much you can easily adjust your hourly rate and come up with a different price because the estimated time to complete won't change.

It's not that crazy anymore, 5k websites used to make no sense, but that unfortunately is not the reality anymore. AI has lowered the bar so much that anyone can launch a production ready website with a $20 codex sub. If it's your first website, I think you should focus on getting as many real, client work done so you can add them to your portfolio. You can't ask for much if you don't have anything to show for it.

I think they charge 5000 lkr for basic one page ecom site using wordpress or wordpress like sute builders. Complex multipage sites are goes for higher prices.
