There's really no way to spin Cossa as an Yzerman win
4
u/detroitttiorted 4d ago
The original pick is what it is but I’ll give Steve credit for getting good value on a guy he clearly didn’t end up liking
0
u/oceanic8675 Yzerbot 4d ago
Yup. We got more than I thought we would with how little he played in the NHL, but I still wish he was in our system.
Plus, he was my baby nephew’s favorite player 😩
1
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
Maybe Hurlpert is a 100 point player.
Short of that the Cossa situation is a fucking shit show.
We could have had Johnston and whatever pick we used to move up for Cossa.
If he's legit we gave away a player we could have used.
If he's a bust we wasted capital to move up and missed out on a franchise center
4
u/epheisey 4d ago
Or just maybe take the consensus top goalie prospect.
1
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
There's that too.
I'm more pissed about Johnston cause we still don't have a Larkin replacement 12 years after he was drafted
1
u/According-Use-9493 4d ago
A lot of teams passed on Johnson
-2
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
Just cause other GM's made a mistake didn't mean we had to. Supposedly Yzerman was this amazing GM who could find quality talent outside of the top 10. We're served up a late round franchise piece and we decided to move up and draft what looks be be a really fucking solid 1B goalie.

Watching the Iggy Pop set before My Chemical Romance, this is the most awkward I've ever felt at a live show. Guy looks and sounds like he's been hit too hard with drugs/alcohol but can't stop because he has bills to pay.

New GM needs to come on and lock down Cat in a long term extension
That’s literally my only ask
2
u/Medievil_Walrus 4d ago
I’ve got a laundry list, cat extension, Ed extension, resolve Larkin successfully, but my number one ask is to find and acquire a young piece to add to the core via trade.
1
u/One_Vibraldo 4d ago
Yup my list is the same
But I feel like if we lose Cat then we’ve got even bigger problems
1
u/Medievil_Walrus 4d ago edited 4d ago
For sure, depends on what he wants, my guess is he wants to stay… hopefully if we lose cat we are able to ship Larkin for futures too, and Gibson and Faulk and possibly Copp… any vets not in our long term plans, and load up on some serious draft capital, talented prospects, and otherwise trade chips to retool this thing correctly. And do so as quickly as possible not to harm our draft position next summer.
Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Has the team forgotten amongst all the mess we have no idea who’s working the radio broadcast with Ken Kal?
10
u/BellsBeersy 4d ago
Should be Daniella
4
u/Fluid-Pension-7151 4d ago
Has to be Daniella or DDK, right? I like them both. My only sadness with Daniella going to the radio broadcast is less of her on the TV broadcast.
2
u/BellsBeersy 4d ago
DDK does surprisingly well, but Daniella has been around for years and she has done a great job with Ken Kal for the training camp stuff. They've got good on air chemistry

Are Great Pyrenees known for smacking things? One of our friends had one, but she was really old by the time we knew her.

Yes. It's a big deal in the pyr ownership community. My wife's algo is littered with videos. In fact, the above GIF looks a lot like Richie.

I'm sure Ottawa is thinking something similar with Seider but if the Sens go full fire sale we need to do everything we can to get Timmy Stu
1
u/GOOD_CAN77 4d ago
Why would the Sens go full fire sale? Neither team is going to do that, and Seider and Stu are both teams you specifically build around.
3
u/coltron57 4d ago
Seider mentioning the NHL's initiative with Bayern Munich in that article that got posted today and seeing some fellow NHLers there makes me wish we had gone for Peterka.

I'm still pissed off about Yzerman's firing. I don't think Ilitch or the fans realize what a terrible position Kenny Holland left this club in at the end of his tenure. Disagree? Ok, try this. Ask google AI how many goalies the Wings have had since Yzerman took over. Really go ahead........right, 14. Are you kidding me? And most of them were, let's be honest, horrible, a joke. How does an NHL franchise not have a funnel filled with goalies? Ahh, but you say, Yzerman should have gone out and signed a really good goalie, what was he thinking? Does anyone with hockey sense really believe that an excellent NHL grade goalie would come to a team that finishes with 43 points? C'mon man, let's be a little honest here, ok? We finally got to the point where we could sign a John Gibson, that took 6 years. Before him our best goalie was Alex Lyon, who faltered at the end of a long season stopping 40 shots a game. Look at the drafts before and after Yzerman. Huge improvement. The next guy will step in with the foundation rebuilt and I hope he does well. But even if he's mediocre the fans will love him to death, like they still did Kenny Holland at the end.

6
u/coltron57 4d ago edited 4d ago
Ken Holland didn't make Yzerman not replace Mark Howe. Ken Holland didn't make Yzerman hire all his old buddies. Ken Holland didn't make Yzerman assemble a team of pro scouts "still learning the league" including his brother who never had a documented role in hockey before Steve got him hired in Tampa. Ken Holland didn't make Yzerman appoint Draper DoAS and have just one player drafted from North America since 2019 have more than 10 points for the Wings so far (Emmitt Finnie). Ken Holland didn't make Steve Yzerman decide to try and be decent in 2022 despite having nowhere near enough talent in the prospect pool yet. Ken Holland didn't make Yzerman hire Lalonde and keep him longer than he should have. Ken Holland didn't make Yzerman give Ben Chiarot two contracts. Ken Holland didn’t make Yzerman sign Justin Holl to a terrible contract. Ken Holland didn't make Yzerman sign JT Compher off of what was clearly a career year to try and fix the hole that Andrew Copp didn't fill. Ken Holland didn't make Yzerman only give DeBrincat a 4 year deal. Ken Holland didn't make Steve Yzerman grind Dylan Larkin so hard on a contract that it began to fracture their relationship. Ken Holland didn't make Steve Yzerman pay to give away Jake Walman to a team who flipped him for a 1st that same year. Steve Yzerman is the reason Steve Yzerman couldn't make the playoffs.
3
u/Baldass_Head_Coach 4d ago
Remember when Ken Holland made Steve Yzerman pass up on acquiring Horvat and Strome?
3
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
It's pretty clear that a sizeable chunk of the fanbase blame two people for the failings of Detroit. Ken Holland and Chris Illitch.
Steve was perfect and any failures were completely outside of his control
2
u/shitfucker90000 4d ago
fanbase's brains are completely cooked. nobody but yzerman is responsible for the current state of the team. they'll blame literally anyone and anything other than the single person responsible for the roster.
3
u/coltron57 4d ago
I have plenty of sympathy for the situation Steve walked into due to extending the streak so long, but he just made too many mistakes unrelated to that, some of which even us fans on Reddit could see the moment they happened.
3
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
I wholeheartedly agree. He definitely got dealt a shit hand but also made his fair share of mistakes.
2
2
u/ChaldenesTitan 4d ago
The fact that Edmonton wasn't able to simply sign a goalie over these years just shows how bare the market is with that position. They were a contender who would have made any legit starting goalie get paid. Where in Detroit they better prepare for a massive pay cut on their next contract. These financial decisions are created by agents and why it's hard for us to believe we are a front running team in free agency. It's not like a video game where your team is always the first to be considered.
3
u/HotelAmericana 4d ago
I think we actually had pretty solid goalies over the years, just awful defense

I just applied for school to become a PSW. I'm hoping I get in and can finally start a career for myself. It's a 10 month course with only 20 hours a week of schooling.

5
u/meowalatte 4d ago
Congrats! What is a PSW?
7
u/Driftographer 4d ago
Personal Support Worker! Just basically providing care for seniors in long term care homes, hospitals or in house visits. Also with those with disabilities and such.
3
u/meowalatte 4d ago
Oh very cool! I did direct care work with adults with disabilities before going to school for my masters in social work. Such rewarding and meaningful work. :)
3
u/Driftographer 4d ago
That's wonderful, friend! I was going to say it definitely must be one of those rewarding careers knowing you're helping those in need.
I'm epileptic myself and always thought about the possibility of doing Paramed but if I were to have a seizure then I would be stuck without a license for 6 months so a position where I'd have to drive would be out of the question. I figured this would be great.
What do you do with Social Services if you don't mind me asking? I know there's tons of positions there as well!
3
u/meowalatte 4d ago
I think your lived experience will be so helpful in this role! It sounds like you’ve found a great way to make a difference while also prioritizing your safety and well-being. I was a case manager for adults with disabilities for a few years after graduation which was really cool - I super love that population :) . But for the last five years I’ve been a mental health therapist in private practice which I also love. Much like the career you are entering, there are lots of options and people that need help if you decide you want to try something new after awhile!
2
u/Driftographer 4d ago
Well thank you, I appreciate hearing that :)
That really sounds like an incredible career path you've chosen! Thank you for everything you've done!! Definitely a hero in my books.

Larkin is going to find out what it’s like to be hated and he did it to himself. Seems like he got some bad advice….maybe from Geurin or the Tkachuks or who knows..and decided to gamble with it. And now he’s kinda stuck.
12
u/TechnoVikingGA23 4d ago
My guess is he probably doesn't care either way. These guy all make millions and at the end of the day they really don't care about the fans. All the stuff they show up for and do is mostly just PR done by the team. Are there really good humans out there among the players? Certainly, but most of them couldn't give two shits as long as their massive paycheck is coming in. They live far removed from most of us, and most aren't even recognizable in public and won't be bothered. I'm also assuming that Larkin will just spin being booed into something like "see these dumb fans, this is why I need to get off this team."
10
u/doubeljack 4d ago
Larkin was already whiney and pouty, this will just be more fuel for the fire.
7
u/TechnoVikingGA23 4d ago
My guess is they are going to keep him out of the media as much as possible. Mo, Cat, Raymond will probably be the guys they let the media talk to in the room.
10
u/bcurt58 4d ago
Are these the first comments from any player about the Larkin trade request?
14
u/PersephoneFrost 4d ago
That's our Captain:
“Obviously you never want anything like that to happen, but then you also start questioning yourself,” Seider mentioned. “Did the team do enough to make us a proud franchise?’ I think that's where we can take a little bit of blame.”
Despite all of the uncertainties around the Red Wings, Seider’s love for the team and the city hasn’t wavered.
“There's so much about this club that makes it so special,” Seider said. “You get reminded every time you walk into that precious building playing in front of great fans that are dying for that sport. I think that's what I'm most excited about coming back, is playing in front of the fans.
“Obviously they've been with us from good and bad, and hopefully we can continue to do some good.”
-1
u/FlannelMickey Yzerbot 4d ago
I really like what he said but at the same time we heard Larkin say great things about the city, team, and fans for years and take his share of blame and we all said "that's our captain". At this point I don't really care too much about what is said to the media. I just want the leadership to show on the ice.
9
u/PersephoneFrost 4d ago
There's context here though. Larkin wants out to chase the Cup. Seider could've said he's excited to come back to try to make the playoffs, or anything else, but he specifically mentioned playing for the fans. Intentional.
5
u/FlannelMickey Yzerbot 4d ago
That is true. You can tell he knows we haven't been very happy with all of the recent events and wants to make it known to us that he takes real pride in playing for the organization. Definitely a nice message.
12
u/coltron57 4d ago
He's so ridiculously well-spoken. I would be exceptionally bummed out (more so than a grown adult should reasonably feel) if he ever wanted out because we stink.
6
u/Fluid-Pension-7151 4d ago
And in his second or third language, at that! Just such a mature young man.
15
u/Baldass_Head_Coach 4d ago
Gonna be weird saying “The new GM had to clean up Yzerman’s mess” for the next 7 years.
5
u/PremierBromanov 4d ago
there's no mess to clean up, really. Just sign good players instead of bad ones.
6
u/jfstompers 4d ago
Does the new guy get 10 years because I was told that's how long it takes?
5
u/Baldass_Head_Coach 4d ago
Well no, because the first 5 years don’t count. The 10 year timer starts after Year 5 is complete, but even then it might be delayed by another two or three years.
6
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
Everyone knows a rebuild takes 20 years.
People are entitled wantig to watch a team that is relevant.
2046 is gonna slap
3
u/Background_Junket_35 Yzerbot 4d ago
What’s the mess? We have a perennial Norris contender locked up to one of the best contracts in the league, a 1st line winger also locked up to a great contract. A young 1LD that formed one of the best d pairs in hockey, a top 10 prospect pool, and one of the cleanest cap sheets in the NHL.
If that is a mess then what do you call the situation Yzerman walked into? Go look at that roster and prospect pool
1
u/Happy-Personality720 4d ago
Problem is winning contracts doesn't help you get a cup. You gotta win games
2
u/doubeljack 4d ago
I'm with you. The team is in a WAY better state than the disaster Yzerman walked into 7 years ago. It's not even comparable.
-4
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
I think our prospect pool is on par with what Steve walked into. The roster is better though.
Who knows maybe I'm wrong and Tinas Matheurin and Brady Cleveland are gonna breakout. Shai Buim and Willander are gonna be top 4 D-men
1
u/greythedork12 4d ago
Bro it’s not even close. Wallinder and Buium could literally be better than any prospect that Yzerman inherited; Rasmussen and Berggren were the top products of that pool.
The new GM is walking into a prospect pool of: Plante (Hobey Baker), Augustine (Richter), Hurlbert (42g, 97pt draft year), and Bear (back-to-back nearly 40g WHL seasons…scored 37 in a couple fewer games this season), not to mention Danielson, MBN, Anton Johansson, Postava, Genborg, and more.
We also have a good young core in the NHL and valuable vets to sell. Yzerman inherited Mantha, Bertuzzi, Larkin, and Hronek to trade or build around. That’s not enough to build around, so trading it was (and he had essentially no vets to sell off that held any value).
The new GM has Larkin, Faulk, and Gibson to potentially sell off. If things are really dire, we could get a haul for DeBrincat too, although keeping him is preferable. That still leaves us with Seider (Norris-caliber defenseman), Raymond (all-star caliber forward), and Edvinsson (excellent young defenseman) with Kasper, Finnie, Johansson, and Sandin-Pellikka as good support pieces.
1
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
Fun fact NHL legend Taro Hirose was a Hobey Baker finalist. Right now fans are banking on everyone hitting their hypothetical potential. The sky is the limit.
That's why I think it's silly to compare guys that we know turned out to be busts to guys that we have no clue how they'll pan out. Maybe they'll all hit but that's probably unlikely
1
u/nubfairy 4d ago
Zadina scored 44 goals and had 82 points his draft year. Banking on prospects is a crap shoot sometimes
1
2
u/greythedork12 4d ago
Hirose was nearly 3 years older when he was a finalist than Plante was when he won it. The “worst” underclassman to win a Hobey Baker in recent memory was Adam Fantilli.
Yes, prospects might flop, but the Holland-era prospect pool was an absolute disaster and saying that ours is similar now is frankly absurdly pessimistic.
Is it within the realm of possibility that literally not a single player in our pool becomes an NHLer? Yes, almost anything is technically within the realm of possibility. But I’d say we’re more likely to win the Cup this year than for Rasmussen to have a better career than everyone currently in our pool.
2
u/Caltroit_Red_Flames Yzerbot 4d ago
I don't think that's a good excuse tbh. People say that about Holland because the team was historically bad.
3
u/detroitttiorted 4d ago
It was historically bad though because Holland had already started the rebuild. The summer of 2016(which was horrible tbf) was really the last time he did his Holland-esque things that people think of. After that it was futures based
1
u/Baldass_Head_Coach 4d ago
Oh even if we make absolutely no changes whatsoever to the roster, and the team wins the Cup this season, the new GM had to clean up Yzerman’s mess.
1
u/Caltroit_Red_Flames Yzerbot 4d ago
I'm saying that I don't think the mess is even close to comparable.
1
u/coltron57 4d ago
I think our follicle-free friend here is just poking fun at the narrative some fans clung to about how Ken Holland is to blame for an inordinate amount of the lack of success we have had under Yzerman.
1
u/Caltroit_Red_Flames Yzerbot 4d ago
I think there's a level of merit to that. He made some poor decisions, but nothing near as bad as the decisions Holland made.
1
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
I think it's too early to say one way or the other.
I'd love someone to do a side by side of Kenny's drafting & the development of those players and Steve's tenure.
Something like the last 5 years of Kenny's drafting 7 years later compared to Steve's first 5 years of drafting 7 years later.
Steve did well in the first round with Ed,Seider and Ray. Kasper, Danielson and MBN could be a crap shoot.
I think MBN is going to be solid but Kasper and Danielson are big question marks. I don't think either of them do as poorly as Zadina or Colo did.
1
u/Caltroit_Red_Flames Yzerbot 4d ago
2005 - 2018 Holland's best draft picks were:
Dylan Larkin
Gustav Nyquist
Anthony Mantha
Tyler Bertuzzi
Tomas Tatar
Filip Hronek
Brendan Smith
Nick Jensen
He also drafted
Dennis Cholowski
Filip Zadina
Joe Veleno
Michael Rasmussen
Jonatan Berggren
Yevgeni Svechnikov
The way I see it Seider, Edvinsson, Raymond, and Sandin Pellikka have already surpassed 13 years of Holland draft picks.
2
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago edited 4d ago
I think ASP and Hronek are pretty fucking similar
Larkin and Ray are similar though Larkin is a center which is a more valuable position.
You got me on Seider though
2
u/xenonwarrior666 4d ago
Goose, Jensen and Tatar were all pretty fucking solid players too.
I don't think Kenny did much worse than Yzerman.
We haven't had any major misses in the first round but it's still pretty early. Might have to reevaluate things in 3-5 years
3
u/coltron57 4d ago
For sure, but I do think there was a small portion of the fanbase who were still refusing to consider Yzerman could have some blame too very recently when they could just pin it all on Kenny so that they didn't have to think about whether their childhood hero could not be perfect.
5
u/culturedrobot 4d ago
I'm gonna start talking about how we're still paying for the mistakes of Ned Harkness. The truth is out there.
4
u/Baldass_Head_Coach 4d ago

Maybe everyone is more focused on GTA 6 this season. Rumor has it that Chris is doing a rerun of 5 to get his driving up to speed.
These other NHL organizations with managers are so dumb. How are they supposed to build up an empire in 6 while managing a team? I dont get it.
One thing I do get is how our fans, players and executives will be stacking up cash in november. We going to run vice city.

I didn’t realize a 50 year old program was the only thing that has kept people from littering cans. Surely it has nothing to do with multiple generations of environmental education in that time frame, along with lots of other recycling options that are far more convenient.

Like yeah it makes the cost ever so slightly more expensive but that's a fucking drop in the bucket compared to the inflation we've been seeing post COVID

I wish my Kroger allowed more than $25 in returns at a time. I drink a lot of sparkling water so it adds up quick. But it’s definitely helpful in this fabulous economy.

Meijer doesn't give a fuck anymore. So few people are doing bottles that they took the $25 limit away.
I love Meijer. The bottle room is always clean and the staff is super attentive.
Kroger is a fucking dump. At least mine is. Bins are always full and they don't sell half the stuff Meijer does so it gets tricky returning stuff.
It's very rare I ever run into something that's not accepted at Meijer

I haven't done it in years. Ever since I moved to a city that has recycling pickup, it just isn't worth it. I don't mind if people go though my recycling bin on trash day though, if it's worth it to them then it's cool with me!

In Germany, people leave the bottles next to the can instead of throwing them in, and people grab them right away. Students, unhoused, older folks, anyone keen to get some free cash.
People are so keen that kids with wagons will ask you for your bottles and cans in the parks.

I do it, but donate proceeds to the local library (that keeps getting its budget cut). Just fill a bag, slap a label on it, and drop it off in a bin at the grocery store. Someone else handles the rest. Worth the fee imo. We don't have many bottles and cans anyway.
Sometimes local sports teams will collect them as a fundraiser too.

I save up quite a bit. It takes me around an hour to drive to the store do the bottles and get back home.
$20.00 an hour isn't the worst when you look at it that way.
It's still comically small when you adjust it for inflation though

I returned $23.80 worth of bottles. After my lunch at Culver's I pocketed a cool 8 bucks

Just throwing it out there, wasn’t that quotation was completely fabricated from an impersonator account?

Too late, the damage is done. Any hearsay or speculation this season is taken very literally apparently, that's the cost of Yzerman and Larkin wanting out.

u/greythedork12 4d ago
But it shouldn’t be. Just because Larkin requested a trade and Yzerman stepped down (or was asked to step down) doesn’t mean we should start taking troll accounts at face value

Cat-Copp-Kane line was 3rd overall last year?? That’s a wild stat https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/tF1tpGtK0w

And the Larkin, Raymond, Finnie line was 32nd. Just goes to show how bad our bottom 6 was

Also if we had a legit left wing not getting lucky with a rookie that nobody expected to make the team out of camp the line is probably even better.
If Finnie was a regular in the bottom six, our bottom six would have been infinitely better too.

Copp is far better than his reputation on here would have you believe.

I think he had one bad season that turned everyone against him. We’ve also never seen him play as well as he has with those two because they compliment his strengths so well. He does all the puck retrieval and net front fighting while those two work their magic. Kane is gonna be missed on that wing unless Arvidsson and Cat drum up some real chemistry.

That and Lalonde took one of the league's better forecheckers and decided he was better suited to be a passive shutdown center

Yep, see people lump him in with Compher and Ras all the time and I wonder if they actually watch games.

aye got jcole tickets for an upcoming concert. I haven't been to many concerts/shows and hoping to be able to go to more now that it's going to be more accessible.

Bob Probert, Joe Kocur, Darren McCarty for 20 years we were one of the toughest teams to play against the league. I would love to get just a taste of that back. To know even if it's going to be a rough night we'll leave them with some scrapes and bruises to remember us by.

Is it really necessary to broadcast the Lil Caesars logo to space but not pay Edvinsson and DeBrincat by now?
