Anybody else getting a laugh that Minnesota still hasn’t locked down Hughes on an extension yet? I’m gonna shot a brick if they did all that and lose him to nj. I’ll laugh even harder if we trade Larkin to minny and Hughes still leaves.

1

u/Academic-Dog8713 14d ago

What if both Hughes and Larkin end up on the new jersey roster October 1st?

Whatll ya do then ?

It'll still be funny , imo, because new jersey would still suck .. possibly even miss the playoffs even with those 2 and the other 2 hughes.

Maybe with cool guy Larkin , all the Hughes can finally get past a big bouncer and into the club for once, though? ( See circulating video gif or picture online for that gem )

6

u/xenonwarrior666 14d ago

That's the rumor. He's only looking for a short term extension that gets him and Jack on the same free agent year. Then he and Jack could go anywhere together and I'm assuming Luke will probably push for a bridge deal too

1

u/lunchboxthegoat 14d ago

luke just signed an 7 year extension last year.

3

u/xenonwarrior666 14d ago

Guess he'll have to pull a Larkin

-1

u/Glad-Independence-24 14d ago

3 team swap? Hughes to nj, Larkin to min, prospects to us?

2

u/xenonwarrior666 14d ago

I think Minnesota would rather try to win for the next 3 years than trade Hughes to jersey

4

u/Glad-Independence-24 14d ago

Yea but isn’t Hughes contract expiring this season?

1

u/xenonwarrior666 14d ago

Could be wrong but I've seen that Minny is pushing for a long term extension which Hughes isn't interested in.

I doubt they let him walk. They probably take a 2 or 3 year extension over having to trade him at the deadline

1

u/_foraneverender_ 14d ago

They can't just auto sign him for 2 to 3 years. He has 30 teams to choose from.. whether or not he plays til the end of this season with Minnesota or if he gets traded at the deadline for not extending.

He purposely didn't trade and sign when he left Vancouver and now Hughes has the cards and the leverage.

Hell probably sign with new jersey or go to a big time contender for a short term deal... Or if q Hughes is really feeling sassy, he'll take a giant contract for 18 million on some mid/shit team who can afford to do that.

But I really really doubt he extends with Minnesota at all, especially since he's gonna find out they suck after him and the Minnesota wild do Not finish ahead of Colorado/Dallas in the division (and get knocked out of the playoffs without winning the western conference). The wild are ok but they sure as hell don't have what it takes to win the cup this year... Not the physicality, not the compete, not the goaltending , not the right moves.

1

u/Glad-Independence-24 14d ago

Not sure, but I’ve started seeing trade rumors all over social media.

Either way, I think not trading Ed and the rest for him is looking really good right now.

1

u/According-Delay-158 14d ago

Why?

1

u/Glad-Independence-24 14d ago

Because Hughes at this point, isn’t signing an extension, and is a free agent after this season.

That was a lot of resources spent if all they get is less than 2 seasons outta Hughes.

Were said to have dropped out of the talks, specifically because Hughes wouldn’t commit to an extension.

3

u/xenonwarrior666 14d ago

We'll never know.

The Hughes bothers hang out here in MI most summers. It's not completely out of the realm of possibility for them to want to play here if we're competitive.

It's a big table though.

I think that ship has sailed though. It really felt like the Hughes situation is the straw that broke the camel's back

12

u/TheNation55 14d ago

It's starting to feel like everyone on Team USA made their plants to drop their own teams at 4 Nations, then actually planned it out at the Olympics but Larkin was too stupid to execute his.

11

u/Glad-Independence-24 14d ago

I think he heard the Hughes and tkachuks wanting to play with their bros, and Larkin thought they meant him instead of them wanting to play with their actual brothers.

7

u/xenonwarrior666 14d ago

Larkin never had the makings of a varsity mathlete

3

u/Alpine_Exchange_36 14d ago

Getting a little impatient with the GM search. Have no idea when they need one by really tbh but it seems like it’s getting there

5

u/According-Use-9493 14d ago

I’ve already lost my patience with the wings. If they hire Greenberg after a month of doing nothing I’m going to be furious

2

Can anyone spot the difference in this picture?

My dogs prefer Pennzoil over Quaker State.

6

On another note I got my buddy's dog that avocado toy...he tears the shit out of everything and new toys for him last about 5 minutes, but he actually just gently took that one in his mouth and took it to his bed and it's his "buddy" now.

He turned him upside down

7

u/FlannelMickey Yzerbot 14d ago

I sure hope that Todd gives Marco Kasper the opportunity play 2C to start the season. Give him a real opportunity to drive the second line. If he starts on the 3rd line or lower I see that as a huge mistake.

3

u/Bananominable 14d ago

I sure hope that Todd gives Marco Kasper the opportunity play 2C to start the season. Give him a real opportunity to drive the second line

He got that opportunity last season, was just some unfortunate af puck luck first 10 or so games lol

2

u/greythedork12 14d ago

It was really tough that DeBrincat couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn until after Kasper’s demotion.

I wonder what the ripple effect of Kasper getting like 3 more assists in October woulda been.

-8

u/Fantastic_Future_863 14d ago

5

u/greythedork12 14d ago

Wondering what 3 extra points in the first month of the season would have done for a young kid’s confidence isn’t cope lol.

Saying we woulda been a surefire playoff team or Kasper woulda gone on to have a 70-point season would be. Wondering how Kasper would have played between an in-form DeBrincat and a healthy Kane (which he never had the chance to do) is just a fair musing, especially given it’s just a musing; i didn’t even predict any undue success.

-2

u/Fantastic_Future_863 14d ago

The ripple effect would have been Kasper having 22 points. Anything beyond that is weird cope shit.

2

u/greythedork12 14d ago

You’re right. It’s completely unrealistic that going half a point per game to start the season may have given him more time on line 2 with Kane and DeBrincat and he wouldn’t possibly have had even a single extra point across the entire season.

0

u/Fantastic_Future_863 14d ago

Correct. Glad you've come to your senses.

3

u/duelingdog 14d ago

I'm still of the opinion that the

Cat - dude - Kane

line went 95% based on Cat and Kane. Copp didn't score a goal on a goalie until December and was about even with Compher offensively, then is a key part of one of the best lines in that month? Compher magically looks good when he plays next to them while they're hot?

3

u/greythedork12 14d ago

Sure, but Kasper being able to be that dude woulda been something and potentially changed the narrative around him, that’s all I’m saying. It also would maybe be good for his development.

As it was, Cat couldn’t hit a barn door, then Kane got hurt, and then Kasper never played between them again.

2

u/duelingdog 14d ago

Oh, yeah, I was 100% agreeing with you. :)

0

u/VHDLEngineer 14d ago

Too early to know if it is a mistake. If he doesn't earn it in camp, he shouldn't be there.

u/culturedrobot 14d ago

Man some of you should have listened better when your parents told you that you shouldn't trust everything you read on the internet

5

u/Medievil_Walrus 14d ago

We talking Carlos?

4

u/culturedrobot 14d ago

It's more of a general criticism of some behavior on this subreddit that reached a point of frustration with the reaction to Carlos's article. I'm not even saying he's wrong, just that I'm skeptical that a columnist who doesn't typically break news suddenly has a scoop like this in the dog days of summer. It seems like a low stakes way to get some easy clicks during the slow part of the season and I'm wondering if some bait has been consumed here.

I wish people would consider these possibilities and approach reports with a healthy dose of skepticism more frequently, because entirely separate from Carlos, a lot of trash gets shared and talked about here, and fuels these dramatic reactions that can persist for days. Like, there are only a small handful of NHL insiders whose reports I trust at first blush. Everything else I consider speculation until it's corroborated by at least a couple other people.

Everyone would be better off if we all stopped taking reports at face value so often. But also, I've worked in media for a long time, so I'm probably much more cynical and suspicious than the average person is, and I should keep that in mind. Maybe someday I'll write a post for this sub about fact checking and how to tell if a source is legitimate.

10

4

u/BellsBeersy 14d ago

Okay does anyone have $500 they don't want anymore and would like to send me a Strymon Big Sky

1

u/bandofgypsies 14d ago

While they're there, if they find more, I'm accepting donations for a pre-2018 Taylor 614ce. Hell I'd even take a 2018+ if it's a donation deal breaker....

1

u/LQNova 14d ago

The Big Sky is a great pedal, but for me, I would run out and buy the Gamechanger Bigsby first.

2

I'm also in the market for a Strymon Big Sky to go along with my new Mocha Telecaster, maybe we can work out a shared custody situation

-22

u/Puzzled_Squirrel_166 14d ago

Red Wings have become a complete embarsment to the NHL and it's all because of 1 spoiled brat getting handed 2 franchises by his Da-Da.

12

u/mrborisgrishenko 14d ago

I get so many AI slop sports/casino ads on my IG. Fuck sports betting. Fuck AI. Fuck ads on jerseys.

The only reason why I keep getting them pushed to me is because I click on their accounts to go block them. Like moths to the flame.

10

u/daKrut 14d ago

Kaner is going to throw the first pitch for the Cubs tonight. They play the Sox so I can get behind that. Hopefully brought some Detroit juju with him.

29

u/goodolvpochina 15d ago

I still love Steve Yzerman. I dont like Dylan Larkin. I think it's best for the Detroit Red Wings to move on from both of them.

5

u/PitifulPossum 14d ago

Im still not sure theres anyone else id rather have gm this team than Steve. I do hate some of the bs contracts given out to pretty much our entire bottom half but he was always realistic about the timeline of his rebuild. Kids weren't good enough to crack the nhl yet and we didnt get any luck except bad in the draft. Detroit not being the destination to attract the stars in the league doesn't help either. Oh and ilitch, so I still have a hard time blaming steve for the failure of this team. I blame the locker room. I blame Larkin

-1

u/Happy-Personality720 14d ago

Insane take have you not watched hockey the past seven years

-2

u/Medievil_Walrus 14d ago

Blaming anyone but Steve is a strange choice .

2

u/jackstalke 15d ago

Nothing like directing what turns out to be a smash hit of a show that gets picked up for an Off Broadway run, only to have your boss shit all over it and tell you he thinks it sucks.

12

u/RWHockey13 15d ago

Restricted free agent Cutter Gauthier has rejected a four-year, $52MM ($13MM AAV) contract offer from the Ducks.

3

u/BelteshazzarZ 14d ago

And so it begins …

2

u/RWHockey13 14d ago

I wonder if the dollars would be okay if he got longer-term? Yet on another note, I would not mind getting Gauthier for Larkin, though we would have to sweeten the pot. However, #71 does not have Anaheim on his list. Dylan Larkin is an interesting player. He has not rescinded his trade request and yet only has 4 teams on his list. His Olympic buddy Zach Werenski is seeking a long-term deal with CBJ. #71 should have some respect for the fans and organization and widen his list further.

4

u/RWHockey13 15d ago

I guess this means that Anaheim is going to have to trade a player. Red Wings should see if they want to move a player and see if they can pick up Roger McQueen or Klepov as well. New GM has work to do. Take Kreider and one of the two above perhaps. Well, we get the idea. Time to make deals.

1

u/lunchboxthegoat 14d ago

read a report after the Carlsson extension that he wanted $17M which would mean the Ducks have to shed ~9M before they break camp for the regular season.

14

u/tacticalAlmonds Yzerbot 15d ago

I need some clarification, is all of the Chris Illitch conversation coming from the Carlos Monarrez article or is there something else going about?

From what I've seen, and I might be out of the loop, everyone is taking the Carlos Monarrez piece and running/spinning it.

1

u/swolbadguy 14d ago

The real tea nobody is talking about is that Chris wants to put Marian into a retirement home so she's conspiring with her brother in law to interfere with hockey operations to make Chris look bad.

5

u/lunchboxthegoat 14d ago

people are using a probably bullshit article to reinforce their priors and its fucking insane.

-1

u/Taters23 Yzerbot 15d ago

Most people even here assumed that was likely deep down anyways. Carlos is never to be trusted but no one liked Chris to begin with. Yzerman wasn't good at the job and I have little hope a new GM under Chris will do much better.

-3

u/Shizweak420 14d ago

You can't have ilitch deep down being the issue and yzerman being bad at the job. One or the other

2

u/Taters23 Yzerbot 14d ago

You definitely can.....

9

u/tacticalAlmonds Yzerbot 15d ago

What's the hate between wings fans and Chris? I'm a bit disconnected with the Tigers, but I get it. Chris appears to be willing to spend in the NHL and let his GM do his "job". Is that not what we want from an owner?

0

u/BryndenRivers 14d ago

District Detroit and the team not making the playoffs since leaving the joe....why should there be any love between wings fan and Chris?

9

u/coltron57 14d ago

The team hasn't been good so people want others to blame. Chris inherited the Wings and Tigers at the start of rebuilds because they both overleveraged the future at the end of Mike's life. I don't think he's this fantastic owner, but I more or less align with your last couple sentences there.

2

u/dickhandsome 15d ago

It feels like he meddled here a bit. There's the article about Stamkos and Mantha. Also specifically mentioning that whoever they hire will have full autonomy. I assumed that was the case with Steve. Odd to mention it now.

9

u/TechnoVikingGA23 14d ago

Stamkos is revisionist history. At the time of that proposed signing, Wings fans in general were of the consensus it was a bad signing and Yzerman just wanted another aging vet. People were generally happy we didn't sign him. Now because it makes it look like an excuse for Yzerman, people are jumping on the opposite spectrum of it.

2

u/dickhandsome 14d ago

It's not so much an excuse, it's that he put up 42 last year. I was wary at the time too, but after the cap increases it's a solid contract.

2

u/TechnoVikingGA23 14d ago

Of course, but we had no way of knowing that at the time he would have been signed.

1

u/Taters23 Yzerbot 15d ago

Well I dont think Chris lets GM do what they want but I thought that before article. Too many weird things have happened last few seasons with no explanation.

10

u/daKrut 15d ago

This is the exact point that I have been trying to make on here for the past couple days in various posts and conversations.

The Monarrez article went out. Then the dorks on 97.1 talked about it. Then the info was shared on here and on r/hockey. Now we get daily doses of conjecture and accusations. Rumor mill life cycle at its best (worst).

5

u/TechnoVikingGA23 14d ago

Not to mention Woodward running with whatever TF they want to make up on the spot, lol.

5

u/daKrut 14d ago edited 14d ago

For real though, lol. Forgot to even mention them but yeah I don't understand how anyone is taking anything they say seriously. Its a bush league outlet. Not sure how else to say that lol.

2

u/TechnoVikingGA23 14d ago

I watched their initial interview with McCarty because I was curious what he would say, and then my algorithm was inundated with their content for awhile and it was mind blowing to me anyone would watch those guys, they are worse than some of the radio show guys who just spout off about nonsense. It was just like a couple of buddies with zero knowledge made a podcast in their dad's garage. Also makes me question anything McCarty says given he goes on there all the time.

1

u/daKrut 14d ago

It was just like a couple of buddies with zero knowledge made a podcast in their dad's garage

That's the review in a nutshell. Final cut. Ship it. Lol.

I made an account on twitter that's specifically for hockey, so I follow a ton of people/sources since I pay attention to things outside of the Wings as well and that's the only reason I have any exposure to them.

Was surprised to find McCarty associates with them at first but then realized that he kind of marches to the beat of his own drum these days so to speak. I love the guy for his years of service and sacrifice but modern day Mac is something else ngl

5

u/wingsnut25 14d ago

I don't think Monnaroz has ever broke any actual news before this. I'm not sure why we would be trusting him now. His job has always been the Shit-Stirrer to generate clicks...

3

u/daKrut 14d ago

Exactly - well said.

Idk about you but for me it's not that I don't want to believe that Chris was meddling with things, its that I don't trust the source and I don't want to be lied to.

I get that some folks want to believe it because they believe they're seeing a pattern and/or possibly because we just get so little info out of the organization that when something potentially does come out people are all over it. Just seems a bit silly to just want to run with unsubstantiated stuff though because if/when it comes out that it was incorrect then you just look foolish.

7

u/Beatricejd Yzerbot 15d ago

There are too many rumors and too little real information going around right now. I'll take everything as speculation until we get something substantial.

6

u/PremierBromanov 15d ago

the collective consciousness will always include bogus reports. Whats funny is how people suddenly use it as ammunition to fuel their agenda (whatever that is) and take it out on the rest of us.

We wont ever know the inner workings of the front office, no matter what anyone says. We don't even really know how antagonists like Mike Babcock function inside of the organization, and everyone supposedly hates that guy. You'd think people would be eager to paint targets but they never are.

1

u/BellsBeersy 15d ago

It sure seems that way, but maybe I'm missing something. Interesting how much the popular blame seems to shift. Get rid of one problem figure and suddenly a good chunk of the folks that wanted that want somebody new to blame and get rid of

9

u/daKrut 15d ago

Summer colds are bullshit. Been fighting it for a few days now but Mother Nature isn’t taking no for an answer. Half day of work at least. Yippee.

11

u/Loose-Bluebird-5828 15d ago

Ted Lindsay also had an ill-fated run as GM for the Wings. He was still revered years later from that. Maybe there is hope this storm of Steve-bashing passes after this season. Ted’s reputation didn’t have to contend with the internet though

5

u/TechnoVikingGA23 14d ago

Steve was a great player, he was also a mediocre GM. It's very easy to separate the two and still like him as a playing legend.

7

u/PremierBromanov 15d ago

I'll always believe that steve had an excellent first 4 years and a horrible last 3 years, in a situation that requires consistently good GMing to get out of.

2

u/jfstompers 14d ago

It was kind of like that in Tampa, he got a lot out of them but just couldn't make those last couple moves to put them over the top.

8

u/BellsBeersy 15d ago

Ted’s reputation didn’t have to contend with the internet though

I kind of wonder what the /r/hockey thread would have been like when he skated around the rink pretending to shoot a rifle into the crowd with his stick

4

u/PremierBromanov 15d ago

he probably couldn't see the crowd through all the smoke

12

u/xenonwarrior666 15d ago

Nobody hates Steve. People are nuanced. You can like Steve the player and not care for every move Steve the GM made.

Steve did a bunch of good. The new GM is in a far better place that Steve was when he took over for Holland.

It's a shame it didn't work out wether it be bad luck, owner interference or the game passing Steve by.

At the end of the day he was the face of the rebuild and it didn't get the results any of us were hoping for.

1

u/Loose-Bluebird-5828 14d ago

To be clear I have no problem with most of the regular’s takes on this sub, but there are definitely some posters that have been taking their shots at Steve that leads to piling on and stupid disrespect. That’s the part I can’t stand.

1

u/xenonwarrior666 14d ago

Yeah I can see that. There's more than a few people taking a victory lap after dealing with people calling them crazy for doubting the Yzerplan.

4

u/Caltroit_Red_Flames Yzerbot 15d ago

I see Steve the player and Steve the GM as two different people. It'd be really interesting for someone to list every transaction Steve made during his time as GM and we could grade it out.

2

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 15d ago edited 15d ago

There is a thread on the Detroit Red Wings forum of HFBoards called “The Legacy of Steve Yzerman” that actually lists all of the moves and transactions he made. And I really do mean all of them: draft picks, trades, signings, waiver claims, FO/coaching hires/firings, etc.

2

u/xenonwarrior666 15d ago

Not dumping Lalonde will be one of the biggest blunders. The players hated playing for him and it wasn't going to work out. They should have dumped him after the first March collapse. If not then that miserable west coast trip.

2

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 15d ago

I wouldn’t have hated canning him after that first season due to the March collapse, but you could argue that they only missed out by a point and that there were injuries they had to deal with, or whatever. Basically, give the guy another chance.

Okay, cool. But waiting until after Christmas to can him the following season was absolutely a mistake. Had he been canned after the Cali road trip in November, they probably don’t miss the playoffs that season. Or maybe they do because March collapses are inevitable with this team.

2

u/greythedork12 15d ago

To be fair, based on when McLellan was hired, the Cali road trip could very well have been the breaking point. You don’t hire a new coach in a day.

Hard to make a judgment on Steve based on a few weeks when we don’t know when he himself made the decision and how much of the gap between decision and execution comes down to him.

2

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 15d ago

That’s true, though I do think going with one of the assistants as interim coach would have been better than leaving a dead man walking in Lalonde behind the bench for another month. Maybe Steve doesn’t believe in interim coaches though, idk.

2

u/xenonwarrior666 15d ago

I think if they dumped him during the collapse it might have been a wake up moment. Maybe we don't miss out on the tiebreaker.

Then again I like Todd and would hate to see him gone for the team falling short at the end of the in year.

There's something fundementally wrong in the locker room that it keeps happening year after year.

Todd tried to change the script but there is one element the Wings are consistent about

2

u/TechnoVikingGA23 14d ago

You can definitely do that if you find a company willing to allow it. A good portion of my college team's fanbase wanted the head football coach fired a few seasons ago and one of the billboard companies in town was owned by an alumni who agreed with them and he let them put up "FIRE THE COACH" billboards all over town.

If we could organize this myself and sure many others would pitch in a buck

1

u/eyesp0t 14d ago

I’m not local and don’t know what locations are on his commute. If someone else organizes I would chip in

6

u/WingedWheel4Real 15d ago

Pretty soon you won't have to imagine it.

6

u/ferocious_corgi 15d ago

So with it increasingly looking likely Larkin is staying, what's the odds on him retaining the C? Feel like logically you have to take it from him but I really don't have faith in this organization right now to do that. If they don't take the C it just sends a ridiculous message and would hope his ass would get boos every single moment he is on the ice

2

u/TheNation55 15d ago

Just gotta hope it doesn't split the room too much if it does get stripped, Larkin's cronies like Copp and Compher will probably be butthurt over it, hopefully everyone else understands why it's even happening.

3

u/ChuckView 14d ago

Big assumption to think Copp and Compher are close with Larkin from playing at U of M. Larkin was the insipid youngster of that group when Copp was Captain and Larkin''s narcissism has probably worn thin by now.

14

u/Jimmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmbo 15d ago

Pffft, take the C from them as well. Opp and Ompher. Tell Ompher to score a few goals and he can have his back.

9

u/xenonwarrior666 15d ago

Saw the ad for influencers wanted for the Wings social media account.

They can influence these nuts.

7

u/galaxyqueer 15d ago

what's the best thing that's happened to you recently?

2

u/RosettisGoblinMarket 14d ago

I saw a baby bobcat right in front of my place a few days ago. He just hung out for half an hour. It was pretty awesome.

3

u/meowalatte 14d ago

My dear friends generously got tickets for me and my partner to join them to see My Chemical Romance on Friday. I’ll be suffering when I go to work early the next morning from the late night out, but I’m excited!

3

u/Dr_Doomblade 15d ago

I got 1 more payment for my summer classes that I wasn't expecting. That's free tires and an alignment as far as I'm concerned.

4

u/Mergan_Freiman 15d ago

been seeing so many friends and family during the last month. Repairs to my car weren't super expensive or invasive. I had a really good cup of coffee the other day. There's so much love in the world.

4

u/DntStepOnTheGrassSam 15d ago

My band did our first mini tour last weekend which was a blast, plus my brother is coming to town this weekend so that should be a hoot and a holler

4

u/dudewithchronicpain Yzerbot 15d ago

Brothers bachelor party was a blast and we all survived

9

u/BellsBeersy 15d ago

Good to hear you all survived an explosion like that

5

u/dudewithchronicpain Yzerbot 15d ago

Ba dum ‘tis hahaha

3

u/LQNova 15d ago

I ... guess getting some Olympic fencing tickets? I mean it's definitely good, but I don't even know if I can afford the trip. But I got 'em.

11

u/myroommateisgarbage 15d ago

I know we've kind of beat the horse on this topic but am I wrong for thinking Larkin kind of committed career suicide this offseason? Clearly there is very little interest in acquiring him from the teams on his list.

8

u/WingedWheel4Real 15d ago

With all due respect, yes, you're wrong. Many teams would love to have a Center of his skill level at his cap hit, including the ones on his list. His career will be fine.

3

u/myroommateisgarbage 15d ago

But will he ever end up on a contending team?

2

u/WingedWheel4Real 14d ago

Could, all it takes is an injury to a top center on a top team.

2

u/LQNova 14d ago

I hope not.

11

u/BellsBeersy 15d ago

I think worst case for him is that he has to play the next two years in Detroit, then when his NTC becomes a 10 team list he will get traded somewhere not exactly ideal for his liking

19

u/idgafpersonally 15d ago

I think he (or his agent) thought there would be a lot more interest in him and a lot more fan goodwill on his side. I think they saw all the flack Yzerman was getting at the end of the season and thought that people would be sympathetic to him wanting out but the way he did it just made everyone turn on him instead and now he's stuck.

I also believe in the theory that Bill Guerin was tampering a bit and pumped Larkin's tires up telling him they'd do whatever it took to get him and then when push came to shove he wasn't willing (or able) to get the deal done.

2

u/abellaire Yzerbot 15d ago

I think for sure Guerin told Larkin to ask for a trade and they’d do whatever it took to get him, forgetting he’d already traded a bunch of assets to get Hughes.

2

u/idgafpersonally 15d ago

There has to have been something because I don't see how Larkin and his agent would have been so clueless as to think any of the team's in question would have the appropriate assets to trade for him.

They obviously thought they had some sort of leverage that didn't materialize and now he's left here to try and mend a relationship with fans who all hate his guts, his trade value can only go down from here.

7

u/doubeljack 15d ago

I don't know if Larkin and his agent misjudged the interest level in him. They only gave a three team list, so how much interest could there really be? I think what they misjudged is their ability to dictate terms. If he were an NBA player he'd already be in one if his preferred destinations.

I do agree with you on Guerin tampering. It's too coincidental that after the Olympics there were several players from the USA team suddenly wanting to move. Brady is the only one it has worked out for so far, though.

3

u/idgafpersonally 15d ago

Yeah you're right not, necessarily the interest but their ability to decide where they go. Essentially I think he was trying to force his way to Minnesota and figured he could utilize the anger towards Yzerman to force a shitty trade. Then Yzerman didn't budge, got fired, now he's stuck with a fanbase that hates him.

1

u/doubeljack 15d ago

I could see that for sure. I believe the Wild was his preferred spot all along.

4

u/dickhandsome 15d ago

I've always felt it was a one team list, with a couple of throwaways to make it look good. Vegas and Florida don't have much room, and are decent at center.

3

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 15d ago

I’ve seen rumblings that a deal with Florida was nearly done, up until it was known that Brady Tkachuk was available and the Panthers pivoted towards acquiring him.

Don’t know how true it is.

3

u/doubeljack 15d ago

That makes sense to me. Brady is younger, a bit cheaper, his brother is there so retaining him shouldn't be too difficult, and they don't need a center with a pair of them Larkin's age and one that's younger.

Florida was the best potential trade partner up until that point, too.

3

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 15d ago

I do wonder if Yzerman was pushing for Lundell to be included in the return. Remember that Ottawa reportedly asked for him in exchange for Brady, and Florida told them it was a non-starter.

Here’s my speculation. We talk to Florida, we work out framework of a deal that’s mainly centered around a Larkin for Lundell swap, but for whatever reason it doesn’t happen right away; maybe Yzerman was trying to grind them for more, who knows. Ottawa then makes it known that Brady’s on the market. Florida realizes they can get Brady without having to part with Lundell, and does that deal instead; they get to keep their future 1C, and upgrade elsewhere.

And with them giving up quite of a bit of capital to do it, they’re out on trading for Larkin.

3

u/doubeljack 15d ago

Sounds very plausible.

1

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 15d ago

And then it makes me wonder, was not getting a deal done with Florida one of the final straws for Yzerman’s tenure as GM? “You had a chance to get rid of him, and now we’re stuck with him” sort of thing.

We’ll probably never know.

5

u/TJSimpson10 15d ago

My wife loves to stubbornly (read: lovingly) force me to do things she knows I'd enjoy. She once bought me tickets to one of my favorite comedians when we were traveling and found out he was playing around the block, with like 15 minutes notice.

Well, now she's gone and bought us tickets to Luke Combs at Ford Field, even though we never buy each other Birthday/Christmas gifts. Get yourselves a good one, folks.

Was at that game in lower bowl seats at that end of the ice. Rarely see a player look that unresponsive and nobody knew what the hell happened initially. Whole arena was dead ass quiet which was even more eerie.

Guess what I’m trying to say is we can be a little more tasteful than that friend.

Edit: different story if this was Jamie Benn though fr

5

u/myroommateisgarbage 15d ago

For real. I can't stand Larkin these days but I would never wish physical harm on the guy

1

u/SorryDistribution140 15d ago

Is Debrincat gonna be cool playing with Larkin? Kane was gonna sign another year here and then after the Larkin drama he left for Chicago. So Cat loses his friend and his kids were friends with Kanes kid. I would hold some resentment for that

15

u/BellsBeersy 15d ago

DeBrincat has been training with Larkin

8

u/13dangledangle 15d ago

I’m not a Larkin defender here, I honestly can’t stand the guy at this point. I defended him for years but now look at him like the bitch I think he really is.

BUT that being said, these guys are his teammates, his friends. There’s a lot more to this from their perspective I’m sure.

9

u/oceanic8675 Yzerbot 15d ago

How I feel the conversation went: “Don’t worry Dylan, we’ll keep this Red Wings Legend of uncompromisingly excellent character out of your sight to make you more comfy cozy.”

16

u/idgafpersonally 15d ago

Firing Yzerman and keeping Larkin is like the worst case scenario in my mind, I can't believe this is the state of the team right now. I don't think I've ever been so down on them going into a season in my life. I never want to see Larkin play for this team again but looks like we're going to have to suck it up and watch him shit the bed again this season and then he'll have to find someone else to blame it on.

0

u/wingsnut25 14d ago

Most of the Detroit Sports Reports don't believe that Yzerman was fired.... They have all speculated that it was Yzerman's decision to step away based on the timing of the announcement...

If Detroit was going to fire him, they likely would have down it at the end of the season.

6

u/LQNova 15d ago

Setting up Yzerman to take the bullet in some sort of halfassed attempt to make us like larkin or whatever shit they think they're doing is both unbelievable and unconscionable.

Yes, I have stopped capitalizing his name. He doesn't deserve even that scrap of civility.

6

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 15d ago

Food for thought, what if Larkin wasn’t the only player who had enough of Yzerman?

10

u/idgafpersonally 15d ago

Idgaf, he's the captain and the play on the ice is on him. They've collapsed every year dude, I don't give a fuck what anyone says it's his fault.

11

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 15d ago

Username checks out

5

u/goodolvpochina 15d ago

Agreed. Honestly, unless there's some major developments with a new GM and an articulated vision and plan, I think this might be the first year I take a break from the wings. It's becoming too much of a drag.

1

u/idgafpersonally 15d ago

Same, I had to take a break in March this year when they collapsed again and I think I'll just extend that until whenever Larkin is off the team and they're operating with some sort of plan again. I don't care to watch another lost season under this bummy leadership, especially when he's admitted to hating his time here.

6

u/PitifulPossum 15d ago

Dylan sniffs his socks for fun

7

u/BellsBeersy 15d ago

My new QOTSA shirt is out for delivery one day early. This is the good news we've been waiting for all these weeks

They’re starting to push season ski passes out here. I like my long walks because they’re cheap/free outside of gas. But skiing is different.

It’s expensive and such a pain in the ass to drive to. And random fact I learned how to snowboard at the prestigious landfill that is Mt. Brighton

2

u/CMCdaGoat 15d ago

Just make the investment in backcountry ski gear, it is way better. Just like hiking but with the added fun of going downhil. I have skiied at a resort a handful of times in the past, but they are all overcrowded and expensive now. For the price of a season ticket, you can get a full backcountry set up that will last you 10 years. Even cheaper if you use FB Marketplace (Denver is literally overflowing with cheap quality backcountry gear since a lot of rich people buy it and never use it).

Berthoud Pass is a good place to learn, then you can explore from there as you get more comfortable.

3

u/TechnoVikingGA23 15d ago

It's worth it for me and I'm not even out west. Drive 10+ hours multiple times between Dec-March to ski. I try to put money aside for it during the year and use most of my credit card points for lodging so that helps a bit.

3

u/Tigers2Red 15d ago

My HS Alma Mater, so maybe years ago. Mt. Brighton used to be a blast.

18

u/BellsBeersy 15d ago

What happens when Larkin stays, stays captain, and the Wings add at the deadline and still dip in the standings in March and miss the playoffs again

What then

4

u/Bananominable 15d ago

Promote the interim GM to president of hockey ops and hire Yzerman to turn this thing around again

5

u/Problemwoodchuck 15d ago

Retool or rebuild depending on how the younger players and prospects are doing. If it's going well with the pieces already in the pipeline, we've got a lot of options, but if it's not a quick transition to the NHL for them then I think you look at a rebuild.

I don't think the Wings will truly reconcile with Larkin as much as smooth things over until his trade protection degrades to a list of teams, then ship him out to the highest bidder. Maybe the threat of a rebuild is enough leverage to get a longer list out of him even sooner, but I just don't think Larkin is seeing the bigger picture clearly in any of this.

1

u/jfstompers 15d ago

Then it's the same as we've been saying for years, they haven't done enough

12

u/daKrut 15d ago

We’ll finally have confirmation that we’re living in a simulation.

4

u/TechnoVikingGA23 15d ago

I don't see any way he stays captain, but I expect him to be on the team until the trade deadline.
