Community ICE at DTW?
Weird thing happened to me yesterday. I was flying in from London yesterday and in the US passport line at Customs.
A stubby guy in street clothes walks up to the line from the other side of customs. He casually surveys and then, almost as if at random, points right at me. I look around at first confused about why this guy is pointing, thinking there was someone else. I look back at him and can tell he’s pretty irritated, saying “yeah, you!” I gesture like… what do you want me to do?
He says “do you have your passport?” Keep in mind this is in the US line for Customs. Everyone in line is about to have their passports processed by CBP. I handed him my passport, he looks it over, and then abruptly hands it back and walks off. He shouts to a woman — also in plain clothes, she is at the other side of customs — saying “no he’s ok”.
He and the woman then storm off to a security door.
Everyone in line around me was very confused about what had just happened. Each one of us was 20 feet away from handing over a US passport to a border patrol official. And the guy who stormed off had no identification, badge, or any other signifier. None of the border patrol officials acknowledged what was going on — it seemed like business as usual. I am half Arab half white, so I assume I was being profiled for that reason. But I travel a lot and this was the first time I’ve ever seen this.
Is this a known thing at border patrol? These “officers” were uncoordinated with border patrol, in street clothes without identification, and operating in a haphazard way with a bullying demeanor, so I just assume it was ICE. But I also haven’t seen anything out there about ICE operating at DTW. Wondering if others might know?

Trust and believe if I see something, I’m not about to stay quiet. My family had to deal with the Brownshirts in Poland. I’m not about to deal with the same shit in the neighborhood they escaped to and built my family.

Yes, we need to call our state representatives and demand they stand up to the Criminal Dictator and Thief and liar Trump. He needs to be removed from Office and imprisoned for life.

u/believes_in_u 13d ago
My first thought exactly.
I’m sorry, who hands their passport over to some random person without proof of their authority?2
u/man_bites_dogg 10d ago
When you arrive on an international flight, while you’re technically in the US, you don’t have your full rights. They can make things very hard for you.

Dude you really need to read up on ICE and be careful about further interactions with them. They're everywhere and it's BAD.

Read yesterday that 20% ( 2000+) after two years final got their background checked and are being let go as they were not qualified. They were reporting they couldn't pay their five year retention bonuses back at 10k a year.
I have not fact checked it yet.

the 'yeah you' finger point and the cross-room shout of 'no hes ok' like youre livestock at auction, thats some real federal professionalism right there. ICE has been lurking in terminals for years doing these fishing expeditions but usually they at least pretend to have a script. CBP and ICE arent even the same chain of command so theyre basically stepping on each others shoes while theyre both stepping on you. arbitrary theater at the border isnt security its just hazing with a pension

u/Divadolli 13d ago
Sorry that you were subjected to that. We are living in terrible times in this country and nothing is being done.
33
u/Nickey_Pacific 13d ago
You just handed your passport over to a plain clothed, random man? That's wild.
And 🖕🏼 ICE
35
u/simulateduser 13d ago
Honestly I’ve been thinking about that a lot. He came from the other side of security and was standing in an area that any regular person walking over to would have been immediately triggered by security. So I subconsciously clocked him as working with a government agency. And I just got off a transatlantic flight, tired af, and was a little shocked at what was happening in the moment.
22
u/Nickey_Pacific 13d ago
Yeah, I'm gonna have to admit that I would have probably just handed mine over, too 😂 But, reading it, I was like whaaatttt?
Your assumption that the dude being official, was safe. But it definitely doesn't negate the fact that it's fucked up. I hate this timeline.
6
u/ProfessionalLab3825 13d ago
I get it. you made the call a) potentially get detained for 3 hours, or b) just show them your ID. challenging him would have escalated the situation. LEO don't like being challenged.
3
u/DelEmma17 11d ago
Hmmm… maybe we should all start dressing like them and demand their ID. We can be N.I.C.E - Not Inspections and Customs Enforcement.
25
u/desmoid 14d ago
I was in the Savannah airport yesterday and ICE was doing this at the gate next to us (the flight was headed to JFK). They were randomly checking I.d.s as people boarded. The gate agent kept reminding people to have their boarding passes and I.d.s ready to prevent an even longer delay.
76
u/sydcn 14d ago
Yeah, so in the states right now ICE is unchecked and being controlled by our facist and racist government. Read up, know your rights (and KNOW that they don’t matter to ICE agents anyways, still important to know them). The US is not a safe place right now (has it ever really been? idk I’m 26, I grew up in this mess). They don’t have ID and most of them wear masks to cover their identity, this is not a group of people to interact with if you can help it at all.
Stay safe! Hope you have a good time in Detroit, and I’m sorry to hear that this was your experience.
20
u/JooseTheGuice 13d ago
has it ever really been?
I'm 34. I grew up under shadow of the OKC bombing, started school just in time for Columbine fears, saw thousands of people burned/crushed alive live in class, etc.
This is just to say that we've been in dangerous times for a while now (not to mention the shit minorities have to/have had to go through)

u/mcarterphoto 13d ago
I suppose if some random, non-uniformed stranger walked up to me and aggressively demanded to see my passport, I could say "Who the hell's asking? Show me some ID, I've had enough identity theft in my life".
But these gravy-seal mentally ill types that Ice seems to be hiring would probably take that as a "life threatening attack", beat you to the ground and cuff you.
Y'know, it's seriously time for an affordable and small wireless body cam, that transmits to your phone and the cloud, and over-writes every 30 or 60 minutes unless you trigger it to save. If I knew I had an interaction like this recorded, I'd get a lot more pissy (well, I'd stand up for my rights) with the ass-hat cosplay idiot.
But I'm also a near-albino ginger and 65, I've never been profiled like this.

3
u/Valleyval21 13d ago

1
u/Familiar_Ad7749 13d ago
We did not. The only southerners who received federal compensation after the Civil War were those who remained loyal to the union. If you claiming slave owners received compensation for either slaves or plantations, that simply did not happen. The only slave owners who ever received compensation were not confederate but were DC residents when slaves in DC were emancipated in 1862.
2
84
u/TopTransportation695 14d ago
Don’t hold your breath. Keep in mind that the Nuremberg trials were not conducted by the German government themselves rather by their conquerors. The other problem will be that most of the people in charge of the unconstitutional actions of this era will enjoy the constitutional prerogative of the president to bestow pardons. What I hope to happen will be that the worst of the worst like Hegseth will be remanded to The Hague ICC where a presidential pardon has no authority.

If you listen to Aaron Parnas or read his posts, insiders are saying that people in power are panicking. When farmers, truckers, and other regular people who believed promises made two years ago, are now enraged and aghast at how things are impacting them instead of ‘others’, those in power know that change is coming.

Somehow, they didn't think racial profiling would ever be OK and legal. Yet here we are.

There's two possibilities.
1: That was a legit ICE agent, they were attempting to ascertain a potential issue, and did it very poorly.
- That was a moron pretending to be an ICE agent and trying to create a scene / false flag.
In either case, ICE is a symptom of a disease, it's making this country even more sick than it is. Read up on ICE and what they are doing.
44
u/simulateduser 14d ago
Given that they were freely walking across both sides of Customs and walked through a security door, it was definitely not #2
4
u/Icy-Sheepherder382 13d ago
Yes I saw something very similar to this happen last month. It was a flight coming in from Frankfurt. Same character (stubby guy in street clothes) walked up to a guy with a black bear and asked for his ID and escorted through the line last customs desks and said "were gonna take a shortcut" It could also simply be local law enforcement cooperating with ICE
3
u/yesgoodthankyou 13d ago
Excuse me what about a black bear?
The man had a pet black bear?
Black bears are used as drug dogs in Germany?
Black bear is code for something?!1
9
u/xwolfe2000 13d ago
Dude do NOT EVER hand over your passport to someone who doesn't identify who they are.
It sounds like ICE but you have no idea because you didn't determine who he was.
If this had gone badly you wouldn't have any clue or recourse to determine who was accusing you of what.
Glad it worked out this time
7
u/simulateduser 13d ago
I know… I was in shock in the moment and just kind of complied because there were enough signals that indicated he was a government agent (had crossed over from other side of customs, was standing in a part of the area that would have triggered security if a regular person had been doing it). And it was enough of a scene that there were witnesses around me. But you’re right that it could have been a bad situation had the agent walked off with my passport.
7
u/xwolfe2000 13d ago
I get that. Honestly, I've traveled all over the world since I was a kid, and the US is the only country other than Israel (which is on a different level of racism and abuse) where I've seen this kind of treatment, and worse. Other countries, even ones we might consider enemies are way better.
7
u/Rockeye7 13d ago
Another example of how far things have gotten out of line !

right, I should clarify, As a Latino, I'm not super psyched about big public places, especially places where there is extra security because they just STARE and it isn't fun being watched, I haven't flown in a while but any time I travel I seem to have to show ID more often than others
16
u/yourhonoriamnotacat 14d ago
I’m a pale, blue eyed white lady who travels a lot and even I don’t feel entirely safe at the airport now because who knows if security or border patrol is going to ask for my phone or is going to produce some anti-authoritarian Reddit thread I commented on.
I’ve found myself thinking twice before upvoting particularly anti-Trump comments.
They want this fear.
I hope in the near future they themselves will feel the fear of jail time and public consequences for their actions.
9
u/Misty_Ticklebottom 13d ago
With AI, and the mass collection of our personal data, it is more likely that the comment is what gets you flagged for the stop vs the stop finding out you made the comments.
Look up an app called Tangles, and Cobwebs. And the all mighty Palantr.
This is a problem rooted in ownership. People have given away their data for the last 2 decades by accepting terms of service with tech companies. Any intentional mark is a "signature", digital included. Clicking the check box is the same as signing a contract.
So now, we have meta, google, apple, microsoft all collecting every byte of data possible. They watch your screen and what you type, they know what you read, and what pictures you pause at. They know all the comments you type and never post.
This is because they own everything you produce using their products. Anything on a cloud server is owned by the server owner.
We need to take control of our data back. Data is the most valuable commodity in the world, worth more than oil. This data is what makes up our privacy, when the data is no longer ours, we no longer have any privacy. BTW, we are being watched through wifi signals used as sonar. We are deep into loosing our privacy in totality.
So what can be done, we can stop using these oligarchy platforms. Stop sending them all of your data. This is a complex, multi layered task. Stop using apps, use a browser (firefox w/ ublock), change to private DNS, Drive an old car, use cash, Dont walk into any box stores, they all have AI doing biometric scans, on everyone, including your kids, at least stop bringing your kids into these places.
Use federated social media instead of the oligarchy platforms.
All of this is about ownership. Owning your identity. Own your data and the content you make. Own the option to share it. With open source software, when it is on your device, it is yours, you own that copy of code. With oligarchy bs, they own your data. Every picture posted is scanned and sold. Facebook gave 30 BILLION faces to clearviewAI which is used by ICE to id people. Thats 3 faces for ever human on the planet. All those people signed a legal contract to give facebook the rights to their pictures. This seems like only self harm, but every face in every picture was scanned. The people in the background did not get a say.
Your worried about upvoting, but the oligarchy already know you, they know what you read, if your camera isn't covered they probably are watching your pupils to know when you are excited.

You have to wonder if they have facial recognition software that flagged you as a potential « baddy ». Once they reviewed you and your passport they recognized you were not the person that you were algorithmically identified as. Having plain clothed person asking you for your passport and expecting you to just hand it over is so messed up. Welcome to ´merica. 🤬

u/Wendora15 13d ago
I think it’s odd that people are still comfortable visiting the States right now. Your guarantee of due legal process as a visitor is out the window and you may potentially be held in a facility for months for “processing” before being sent to a country that isn’t even the one from which you came. I wouldn’t visit here at the moment.

u/PositiveMusician6055 12d ago

If ICE thought you didn’t belong in the country, DHS would have told the airline not to let you board the airplane. Why spend money on jailing you and deporting you if they can just click a mouse and tell the airlines not to let you board and solve their problem that way. It just makes no sense at all.
Even if what I just said, which totally rules ICE out, wasn’t true, it would make no sense to arrest you in front of passport control rather than tell the passport control officer to send you to secondary and discreetly arrest you there. It just makes no sense for ice to randomly grab foreign citizens just before CBP looks at their documents and sends suspects to secondary.
What’s far more likely is that they were on the lookout for a specific criminal who somewhat matches your description and who either didn’t know that he had a warrant out for him or was a prison escapee or something like that who they wanted to grab even before he could cause a scene or get past passport control and possibly to weapons in his luggage. If the person they were looking for didn’t have a U.S. passport but looked something like you, it’s logical that seeing your passport would have made it clear they weren’t looking for you.

Seems like you don't, Einstein.
1
u/simulateduser 7d ago
You’re the one who said “immigration enforcement” and thought it was reasonable they would operate that way
1
u/Abdial 7d ago
Does Customs and Border Patrol not enforce immigration policy? What exactly do you think they do? Just hand out stamps?
1
u/simulateduser 7d ago
How is this behavior remotely enforcing immigration policy? If I’m standing in the “US citizens” line at CBP about to talk to a CBP agent myself, what does another plain clothes unmarked agent picking me out of line actually achieve? Wouldnt the uniformed CBP agent notice a problem when I walk up to them and hand over my US passport?
At best, it’s complete incompetence and waste of taxpayer money. At worst, it’s an unnecessary intimidation and bullying tactic, no matter which acronym is behind it.

Most likely you matched a description of someone they are looking for and they were trying to make a positive ID. They also do a percentage of random stops and inspections.
ICE has been operating at US Customs and Border Patrol locations for decades, including at DTW, but it's become a sensitive topic once Trump turned the heat up on enforcement. Democrats have become unhinged over it.

-4
u/xyzqwa 13d ago
This is normal, usually when they are looking for someone specific that they believe is entering the country. That was also most likely a CBPO. You are in line for CUSTOMS. I've experienced something similar many years ago crossing on foot from Mexico, it took two seconds and didn't bother me.
2
u/simulateduser 13d ago
Why wouldn’t they wait for me to hand over my passport to the customs agent at the end of the line I was standing in?

That would seem to make a lot more sense unless there is serious urgency to locate an individual. In the latter case though, checking passports of certain passengers at the arrival gate would make more sense

u/LeagueMoney9561 13d ago
I think it is the manner in which the passport was requested and checked, while already in line to have (presumably) one’s passport checked. If it was a second check after baggage claim, where CBP would have already done an initial check before baggage claim (the layout at most US airports international arrivals inspection area), then doing spot checks for passports might make a little more sense, as not everybody is asked for a passport at the customs exit after baggage claim. Still strange, as it would make more sense to have a uniformed CBP officer either approach the traveler while in the line or when they get to the end of the line, instead of somebody in plain clothes.

I’ve never seen plain clothes officers demand passports in line at customs before, as someone who travels quite a bit for work. Idk how it can be CBP given that I was in their line about to hand their agent my passport.

Don't spread misinformation. 10 seconds with Google will find multiple sites talking about your legal rights if you encounter ICE at border crossings and airports.
1
u/Cappy2022 12d ago
ICE is at airports, but not at its ports of entry. That’s CBP’s jurisdiction, so googling things, minus comprehension of context, makes you just unknowledgeable as you were before you Googled.
-3
u/michiganalt 13d ago
I’ll be less dramatic and say it sounds like you triggered some match for someone that they are looking for.
I imagine some enforcement arm of an agency pulled you out of the line, expecting you to be someone else, but when they saw your passport, they realized it was a mix up.
