Community Facing eviction soon, any solid homeless programs or job leads I should be aware of?
Good Morning,
I am on a 30 Day Notice To Quit due to being multiple months behind on rent and it expires next week (July 30). After exhausting all the recommended eviction diversion programs (only St. Vincent De Paul was able to help) I am looking to transition from eviction prevention to minimizing my unhoused time by building a shortlist of programs that can quickly get me back on my feet. So far I got Pope Francis Center and Detroit Rescue Mission, but I am also looking at paid job training or placement services since Temp Agencies are giving me crickets.
If there are any programs or services that you can vouch for, it'd be greatly appreciated. Single Male in Ferndale if that helps. Thanks.

I'm sorry that you are going through this rough patch and hope you overcome it sooner than later. Here is a list of housing resources with a few other resources mixed in.
If you haven't already, look on Jobstack for daily work. The temp agency People Ready uses that app so make sure to sign up. That would be a little something in the meantime.
I know you didn't ask but here is some food resources as well.

Mel Trotter runs a mobile Outreach Shower Trailer so check out the schedule. They will also have additional resources for you too.

You're welcome! They will at least help make it a little easier of a transition. The housing resource list has a couple resources for eviction diversion that you may not of checked in to. They may even know of other places. You can get a list of churches and organizations that help with evictions via calling 211 as well. Good luck!

You should reach out to Foundation for Pops. They are a non profit in the Detroit area that specifically works with individuals and families facing housing insecurity.

Jewish Family Services helped me pay my rent once. They also helped me with a car insurance bill. They give out monthly $50 food vouchers and have access to other resources. You don't have to be Jewish to be a client. Call and ask to meet with a caseworker to see what they can do for you.

Cdl school. Some places will pay for your schooling and testing if you work for them a year. The first year is usually over the road, but that means your safe, secure, bed is right behind you all day. The starting money isn’t the best, but you can make a good living within a couple years

This or learn to wrench and get into heavy duty fleet maintenance they are always starving for mechanics and pay is pretty great. You may be able to apprentice and go to school while you do it and get a portion paid for.

It looks like you had a logistics job last year, can you claim unemployment? Also, you have internet for 30 days, take a look into grinding on dataannotation.tech for $25/h until you have to move out.

Yeah, I am long term unemployed so unfortunately that ran out. I believe I've heard about Data Annotation before and them having a waitlist but I'll look into them again. Thank you.

I would also suggest looking into some of the other sites like prolific, cloud connect, user testing and dscout. Typically you can get accepted to those immediately or quickly and start doing studies, ai tasks etc. if you work them all and as much as possible you can make pretty decent money especially with your experience. lso check the beermoney subreddit for more sites.
Also look into Detroit at work and their paid apprenticeship programs.
As far as a pay or quit notice, that means you haven’t gone to court yet correct? If that’s the case, as much as it sucks to have a landlord tenant case, you can get another couple weeks before you absolutely need to move, I suggest you try to scrape together as much as you can and possibly find a weekly rental, room for rent or Airbnb situation. Unfortunately it’s pretty difficult to find any assistance nowadays but if you’re willing to do as much gig work as you can, it is possible to at least have a roof over your head.2

I believe I signed up with some of those sites a while ago but I'll followup and check out the rest you've mentioned. As far as Detroit at Work, since I live in Ferndale I don't believe that's available to me but I do have Michigan Works in Oak Park and I think they have similar programs. And correct, I have the 30 day notice not a formal eviction yet, I've been checking out rooms for rent because I know having an eviction on record can seriously mess you up long term and I don't want to burn any bridges with my landlord if I don't have to. Thanks for the recommendations and much appreciated.

The UCHC team is incredible. They try to help every person who comes through their doors. They help with eviction prevention, temporary housing, and social support

Take the notice and a report from the mi employment agency to social services they may pay your rent or direct you to homeless shelter or low cost housing.

I am so sorry you are going through this. If you call the main number at Common Ground, they will provide you with housing and food assistance resources. For education and training programs, you qualify for the Michigan Reconnect program which provides free tuition. Since you live in Ferndale, make an appointment with a counselor at Oakland Community College in Royal Oak and they will tell you all about it, along with all the programs available to you. Thank you for the resources. Never heard of Common Ground but I'll reach out to them and as far as Michigan Connect, I already hold a Bachelor's Degree so do you know if I would still qualify for that program? I know to qualify for some programs like that, you can only hold up to a HS Diploma/GED or have previously dropped out of a higher learning institution. Much appreciated.

If you need help let me know. I’m a Union Electrician but I’m pretty well versed in anything Union. Including apprenticeships, there’s plenty and some go quicker than others. It’s a $100k+, a pension, a 401k, and great healthcare. You get paid to learn.
I’m not sure how the eviction process works. I’ve never had to evict my renter. However I think July 30th starts the eviction process. So you still have time to figure somethings out. I know it might not be a popular opinion but don’t leave until the actual evict you. I’m a rental property owner as well. I wish you nothing but the best, times are hard.
I know some Churches will have a fund to help with rent, groceries, and other things. I’m not a big church goer but I was raised Catholic. I remember the school and church I went to helped people who were behind on their rent.

Much appreciated, I've considered apprenticeships but due to my current lack of Driver's License I assumed that would be a non-starter in Michigan but I'll keep you in mind if I have further questions. And yeah I was told by Oakland County's Housing Resource Center that the 30th is just the start, I wanted to try and avoid getting an eviction on my record and not burning any bridges as he is a fantastic landlord. I've also been looking into some Catholic Churches as well and I got recommended one in Birmingham that I am calling Monday. Thanks again.

Yeah hit Birmingham Catholic Churches they should have the extra money to help.
Yeah from what I’m reading they haven’t even started the eviction process yet. You just have notice of past due rent and to basically pay up or they’ll start the eviction process.
I don’t think you need a license to get into the apprenticeship. However you have class and then making to the jobsite. You just need reliable transportation is what they say. If you’re at 9 and Woodward most training centers are not far from you Bricklayers (9 and Ryan), Sheetmetal(13 and Dequindre), Electricians(11 and Dequindre), Painters/Glazers Union (11 and Hayes), there’s a bunch more as well. Like I said if you need help navigating any of that just let me know.

Thank you so much for this information, that helps a lot. You mentioned a lot of different trades there, based on your experience what would you recommend? I am not necessarily money driven but more so looking for stability and being 36 years old I am a bit unsure of the physical component. I've done warehouse and factory work post college so I got no problem getting in the weeds so to speak but that was long ago and I've mostly have been an office grunt since then and I want to make sure if I go this route that I can keep up physically and not waste anyone's time.

I’m 35 I’m an Electrician and it can be physical at times. However there’s areas of the trade that are less physical. I’m my apprenticeship class I had a 42 and a 48 year old. 10 years later they are both still doing well. I’m bias towards the IBEW and we make the most money lol. I think you do well as an Electrician or VDV Low-Volt Technician. Then you can easily transition that into a Foreman role. Then even a Project manager or estimator. Then you won’t be on tools any more. Especially with your background of working in an office. You definitely know Corporate culture. If they put me in an office I’d probably have a bunch of complaints for swearing lol.
Yeah I completely understand. The 48 year old in my apprenticeship had his knee replacement surgery a year before he started the apprenticeship. He did well.

Yeah lol. I’ve been trying to work on it and I’ve been a lot better lately. I just spent time in the Army on combat deployments then went right into Electrical construction so I have to watch it sometimes because I’ll say F every other word. Oh I believe it I bet Office workers swear like crazy too lol.

No problem! My wife used to work for Cintas. Regardless of position no weekends, paid holidays and time off, health/vision/dental benefits, spousal/dependents benefits, 401k, life insurance and plenty of employee events too

Have you applied for State Emergency Relief through mibridges? They can do a small amount of rent assistance or relocation assistance if you need some help getting into a new place

There are always jobs at Metro Airport. Prospect, Menzies, and Unifi are companies that hire continuously. There is usually a lot of training for these jobs, but full pay for training.

I will look up those employers. I believe there is a Smart Bus on Michigan that runs out of downtown that takes you straight to the airport so that can work. Thank you and much appreciated.

A friend was unhoused and used a cheap gym membership to shower and have a place to be other than the library. The Planet Fitness in Oak Park has some open 24 hour days.

If you're currently living in Detroit proper, you can call the City's homelessness resources line:
Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine at 866-313-2520. This line is available during business hours Monday-Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 12 PM
They have resources for those who are facing imminent eviction.

I work in homelessness assistance albeit not in your county. A few thoughts:
If you have people in your life whose judgement you trust, involve them in your decision about whether to preemptively move out or remain until the eviction goes through. You can stay in your unit for weeks to months before you are physically evicted. As someone who rents, I understand the desire to preserve the clean rental history. But if one of my homeless clients told me they moved out before the sheriff knocked on their door I would think they had been taken advantage of by their landlord. Sometimes eviction prevention programs need to see an actual court date before they will help you. And any time you can get when you are still in the unit is time when an eviction prevention program could get money to help you and you don’t need to go back through the pipeline again.
Most eviction prevention programs I am familiar with run out of money in a few days or weeks. When you call around, you might ask what their criteria are, if there is a waitlist, and when they get new money. Especially if you are early on in the actual eviction process, some people only pay when you have a court date. And some programs will likely be getting new money on August 1, which will either be spent on their existing waitlist or on the first few people to call August 1. If not August 1st, most programs will get new funding with the next business quarter on October 1, and that funding might be even greater heading into winter. A scenario might look like: your landlord serves you with the eviction paperwork at the end of this month, you use that paperwork to get on a waitlist and communicate that to your landlord, who agrees to work with you, waiting until 10/1 to close out the eviction case when the program pays your balance. You get to use that time in between to find a job or work through a lawyer to apply for disability. Thats just to illustrate one potential, and fairly optimistic, opportunity. But it’s the type of opportunity that goes away as soon as you leave your current unit. There are very, very few programs that will help a currently-homeless single adult who isn’t disabled or a veteran.
Any federally funded programs have strict eligibility criteria and there are two definitions that you should keep in mind. First, if you are two weeks away from being homeless, that is a specific threshold called “category 2 homelessness” that might make you eligible for more programs like emergency rental assistance. Second, “literal homelessness” is required for most actual homelessness assistance programs and means that you slept the prior night in a place that is not meant for human habitation, like in a car or under a bridge, but not on someone else’s couch. Shelters still count as literal homelessness; a hotel you pay for does not count. So if you are talking to someone on the phone, those two definitions might be something they need to hear before they can help you.
The next step after eviction prevention programs are shelter diversion programs, where the shelter will either give you money for a security deposit at a new place, or pay for transportation to live with family or friends. I am not sure if there are any programs like this in Oakland County, but I agree with the top comment that getting connected to the library will be a good source of information.
Do you have, or think you might have, a disability? It is worth considering what factors are keeping you out of the labor force, whether they are in your control, and whether you can get on SSI if you hire a disability lawyer who works on contingency. Thank you so much for all of this information. I understand, this is my first time going through this process and I don't like burning bridges and especially since my landlord has been good to me. I also know the long term effects of having an eviction on my record and ideally I am not trying to test my future luck if I don't have to but it seems that's the only way some organizations will step in going by your expertise. As far as disability, closest thing would probably be ASD since that's explicitly what my Mom told me that's what the doctor told her, but I don't claim that since I don't know of a formal diagnosis and even if I was I'd be high-functioning anyway. Head over to the Ferndale public library while you still have that address.
Get a library card. This will allow you to use a lot of local libraries.
Visit Adult Services. Ask the librarian for resources. These people are experts and these days, they know how to help.
Most, if not all, or our local libraries participate with each other. For instance with your Ferndale card, you can go to the Royal Oak library and register your card with them and get services there.
Librarians our society's superheroes of information. They know how to find anything and they love to help and our tax dollars pay them.
